Just heard a fascinating theory. Curious as to thoughts:

Make 10% of the vaccine supply available for out of pocket cost to whomever would pay. Give all the proceeds to small business relief.

I thought there were no out of pocket costs for anybody at all. So how would. this work?

Just a delayed response to the Gottleib comments from a couple days ago:

I'm an avid follower of the man, but I don't think he's going to prove correct that we will have another major surge do to a variant strain. The reason I say this is that the UK has been dealing with theirs for several weeks now and their numbers are falling not rising.

I don’t understand how the state of NY can ask to purchase the vaccine direct from the manufacturer. If there is unpurchased and available vaccine, why hasn’t it been purchased by the US govt?

I just heard from a friend who was also in the Pfizer study. His wife received notice that she received placebo and was able to schedule an appointment for the actual vaccine through the study. He and his daughter who had reacted at the initial doses and believed that they had the real vaccine all along were not contacted. Neither my husband nor I had any reaction and suspect we received placebo. So fingers crossed we can get vaccinated soon or that we were lucky enough to not react to the actual vaccine but still made antibodies.

Last I heard, Pfizer changed their stance on vaccinating the placebo group after Pfizer said they'd be doing so. I'd call the facility you participated through.

No, CA is not in a lockdown. It is in a stay at home order. So, all retail is still open. Just not personal places like salons and spas.

It’s working in the areas where people were already adhering to all safety restrictions before the orders.

It is not working in areas where people were already not adhering to safety restrictions before the orders.

Some people think CA is just this big blue liberal state. But, our population is so big that even a minority percentage is greater than some states.

I hope so. It’s super frustrating not to be eligible for a vaccine and hear there’s available supply that can be bought.

I disagree. I live in OC. Our numbers were averaging in the 300s daily. Then, suddenly out of nowhere in mid November (before the holidays), they exploded TEN FOLD+. New restrictions were placed a couple weeks later and cases continued to go up and up.

The restrictions are far more than you mentioned. All on-site dining (indoor and outdoor) has been shut down for a very long time. Many places of leisure business that had previously been open are still shut down. There is a curfew in place after 10pm. Etc. The case numbers grew exponentially at a time when they should have quickly gone down. Last time restrictions were placed around July, case numbers went down almost immediately.

I really have to believe that there is a more easily transmissabke strain here, which researchers seem to have discovered, so let's maybe not blame the literally 10 fold increase in cases on "people not adhering to restrictions."

My parents said something about how our Texas governor is going to limit the number of vaccines that go to smaller hospitals (like us) and move to multi-county super sites. There is a sign up that opened up at 8:00am for a 2,000 dose "event" happening 2 counties over (that supposed to cover 6 counties.) Hopefully signup goes well - it's by phone.

To who asked, yes, it sounds like this town is a "subHub."

My parents tried for hours. They finally got a message to leave their name and number and they would be contacted within 24 hours. No return call yet. Dh said 25,000 people called, as per the county official on the radio this am. Surely there is a better way to do this.

I think it is because the US has an AGREEMENT to purchase a set number of doses, but that's not all the doses the company is making, obviously. Remember how the US turned down the option to purchase more doses a couple months ago? Well, Pfizer has to sell the vaccine to someone, right? States have budgets and money that is not federal money. They can use it as they see fit.

Because lockd....uh...strict closure policies...are driving people inside to hang out in far smaller spaces with no masks or social distancing.
