CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

And, that is exactly what I was commenting about above.

Yes, but then you were wondering why younger people were not getting as sick last year before vaccination. You stated the variants are affecting younger people more severely now than in the beginning. I think it's because the newer more aggressive variants can only attack the unvaccinated at this point. Back before we had the vaccines, the strains going around were spreading to all age groups, but the older weaker population were the ones getting more sick. Now that the strains spread even faster and are more severe the younger age group is getting hit hard. I think they were still getting sick last year, but it was more mild in younger folks.

In addition, last year they were largely sending young people home to deal with the virus there, because there wasn't space in the hospitals for them and they weren't "that sick." I think, at this point, they are being a bit more lenient with who they are admitting to the hospital and people who otherwise would have been sent home are being admitted for observation and treatment instead. This could be accounting for the higher numbers of hospitalizations in this age group at this point. Plus, now we know that early treatment can lessen severity, so hopefully young people are getting treatments that they might have missed out on last year.

That's not true for all of Florida. Residents in South Florida are very much mask compliant. Tourists in Miami are a different story. FWIW, the drive-up vaccination site we went to in South Florida had signs posted throughout the park stating masks must be worn at all times.
Just to play devil's advocate, if a Floridian is fully vaccinated there is no reason to wear a mask.

Uhh...okay. That’s exactly what I’m pointing out regarding the severity of variants.

I was talking about the clinical severity among younger people last year, not about how many young ones were getting sick.

So, that explains that age group not being this sick earlier last year?
No one was vaccinated last year.

I was responding to your quote in the bold. You were curious as to why younger people were not getting as sick last year, before we had vaccines.

Yes, I said “not being this sick earlier last year.” Meaning cases were not as severe last year.
That comment was in response to someone saying that the change in severity is due to vaccinations.

Younger people (and I did specify, among the 30’s to 50’s, in a comment just prior to the one you referred to) were neither in school nor were they vaccinated.

Actually, you should still be masked, until we reach the 'herd immunity' vax level. Being vaccinated is not a 100% guarantee you won't catch COVID, just that if you do, your immune system has an idea of what to look for and what to do already.

The new guidance says:

— Fully vaccinated people can travel within the U.S., without getting tested for the coronavirus or quarantining. People should still wear a mask, socially distance and avoid crowds, the agency says.

— For international travel, the agency says vaccinated people do not need to get a COVID-19 test before leaving, unless the destination country requires it.

— For travelers coming into the U.S., vaccinated people should still get a negative COVID-19 test before boarding a flight, and be tested three to five days after arrival. They do not need to quarantine. The agency noted the potential introduction of virus variants and differences in vaccine coverage around the world for the cautious guidance on overseas travel.

The Rational for the vaccinated to wear masks is more simply they don't want people lying and saying they are vaccinated and overall just wondering around say the mall or in a store no one is gonna know who is vaccinated or not. It just makes it simple. They will change to vaccinated don't have to once they hit the group of people that aren't sure if they will get it now or ever.

Did y'all see about Oklahoma? "Oklahoma will begin providing COVID-19 vaccinations to residents of any state"

This will impact the southern part of my state at the OK border if there are people there who want one but for some reason can't get it in KS quickly enough. While my area hasn't focused on it too much because of where I'm located at I know access has been talked about regarding the OK/KS border as far as OK having a bit easier access than KS residents did due to supply and eligibility guidelines as far as I remember it being talked about.

This is 100% true...which is why the death of Father of my niece's friend is a bit frightening ...an early 50s man who died on Friday before he could get the vaccine. It leaves me wondering if he had one of the more transmissible and deadly variants. He did not have a job where "zooming from home" like many people have been able to do...was an option. I have no idea where he got it...but he couldn't avoid being out in the community. He worked as a cook in a local restaurant.

I've also heard that while our local hospital has Covid patients, they're not "overloaded"...but did stop visitors due to transmissibility concerns. It's just a kind of wake-up call....pay attention, do everything you can to get the vaccine...etc. We lucked out today...DH was able to get an appointment today...about an hour north of here on Monday...for the Pfizer vaccine. So...I'll be Moderna...and he'll be Pfizer, but hopefully we'll be protected.

1% of the entire US population is being vaccinated every day. And that number will keep growing. We have not had the "surge" that was promised for March. In about two weeks, the numbers will start dropping again. This time, they will continue to drop.

The upper mid-west is surging for sure. We've had a mini-surge in the Northeast...hoping that we don't go up from here. We seem to be plateauing again in NJ. Most epidemiologists are saying now that it's a race between the variants and the vaccines. I'm interested to see how much vaccine hesitancy we see now that many states are opening up eligibility to all. In my sister's state of NC, she told me that a lot of counties are now getting less supply because they don't have much demand. It'll be an interesting few months now to see what happens.

Yes, this is what I am hearing too. We need vaccines in arms ASAP.

The truth is that even the CDC has found that you are 97% protected against getting Covid if vaccinated and even if you get it you are not getting a serious case. Further tests show that you are 93% protected against spreading it/being a carrier. So if you are in Florida, fully vaccinated, in an area where there is no mask mandate, there is no reason to wear one. Wearing one only makes others feel safer, but in reality does nothing to stop spread the disease. Those who are adamant that everyone wear a mask better get used to this. At the rate people are getting vaccinated there are going to more and more people who will refuse to wear a mask. Listen, I know we are in a pandemic and people are scared, but as we were told in the beginning let us all follow the science.

Same in TN. Appointments at the major hospitals that use to go in 5 minutes when they opened are now not filling. We are having walk in clinics. Local pharmacies are posting that they have openings for same day and next day. Its great that availability is so much improved, but I am worried that they are starting to hit the point where the people left to vaccinate either don’t want it or don’t think it is a priority. My county has 1/3 of the population with at least one dose—we need that number to increase dramatically. surrounding rural counties can’t give vaccines away at this point, but they have definitely not vaccinated a majority of the population. We have a lot of vaccine hesitancy here, and we need that to improve for everyone’s sake.

Agreed, there is very little use for a mask once fully vaccinated. The CDC will come to this conclusion, but with painstaking slowness. Once you're vaccinated you are at a lower risk to a respiratory illness than you were in 2019. On the very rare chance you are unlucky enough to contract Covid after being fully vaxed, you will have such a low viral load that the risk of spread is not worth worrying about. We need to talk honestly above risks and masks. I am pro masks, but not pro masks forever and pro masks when they don't make sense. If you're not fully vaccinated and you are on a plane, in an Uber, etc you should mask up. Once you are fully vaccinated, the threat to yourself and others is so low that it is not worth a thought.

Can we maybe redirect the conversation at this point away from the debate of those vaccinated following current public health guidelines? I'm sure there are endless other threads for that.

This thread is one that at least attempts to stay on the path of what the guidelines are as they presently are, maybe we should try to keep it that way. I'm sure all of us will celebrate the day when we're told masks are a thing of the past but maybe we should try to keep this thread at this point about what guidelines are at the moment in time and update as that changes.
