Dates back to when typists used carbon between the pages, which I happen to remember. I guess that makes me Carbon Dated! Sometimes I feel so flippin old.

Back in the day...there was not a word processor to print off a new copy whenever we wanted one. So if you wanted a copy of a memo you were typing so that it could be sent to multiple people, you had to make it with two pieces of paper sandwiched around a piece of carbon paper. So, the original receipient would get the nice clean top copy, and the other person would get the carbon copy, shortened to "cc". There is also "bcc" which is typed only on the copy of the person getting it and means blind carbon copy, so the original receipient doesn't know the second person got a copy of the memo.

That brings back memories of my first job. I was just a lowly assistant and the secretary was so frugal that I had to turn in my used carbon paper before I could get a new sheet. That was way back in the dark ages, 1968.
I had sent a letter (legal matter) to "John Doe" and cc'ed it to "Dr. Smith".
"John Doe", who is older than me, wrote back all in a huff and let me know they were going be "letting Dr. Smith read your letter".
Oooooh, should I be scared? I'm writing back to say feel free but "Dr. Smith" already has a copy because "cc" means a copy was sent to whoever's name is after the "cc" and I also wanted to say exactly what it stood for.
I cc almost all my letters, guess I'm carbon dated too? But I'm only 40!!!!
