CBR: Upgrading to preferred room at check-in?

We're arriving on September 21  for our free dining trip. When we booked under the free dining package, they told us we had to reserve a standard room. With two little kids, I really, really want a preferred location room since I expect to eat at the food court quite a bit. What is the likelihood of them letting us upgrade to a preferred room when we arrive? I'm totally prepared to pay the $15 charge per night for this.

Any thoughts?

First see where your room is - remember, with two Preferred villages, it's possible the furthest rooms from the food court in those buildings would be less convenient than the villages across the lake (bridge-pool island-bridge). When they show you your location on the resort map and it's wayyyyyyyy out, then ask if it's possible to upgrade to Preferred.

We were just there last week with free dining and booked a standard room, and got upgraded with Trinidad North Building 33 when we checked in! A few others who went at the same time also posted that they got upgraded for free. I think you should see what you get first too.

Great suggestions - I guess I had assumed my "standard" room would stick me out as far as possible, but looking at the map, there are some good locations in the other buildings. We're getting in at noon so we'll head straight to the resort and even though we won't be able to get into our room right away, hopefully being early will give us a good shot at an upgrade (free or paid, either way)!
