We had a bad experience post cruise at the Caribbean Beach resort for one night . I can't help but wonder if we were given bad rooms because we were only staying over night.

We had a 5 night stay at the resort in 2000 and absolutely loved the resort, so we were looking forward to another stay at CBR!

Sorry but this review will probably upset the loyals of this resort, because I was trully surprised with the experience as well.

We checked into the CBR early on Sunday morning after a cruise. Check-in was a breeze and the staff was very friendly. We stored our luggage since our rooms were not yet ready and off we went to find the Magic Kingdom bus. Waiting less than 5 minutes, we found the bus ride to be nice.

After a wonderful day at Disney's Magic Kingdom, we headed back to CBR exhausted. We called ahead from the bus to get our room assignments. We also called baggage to have them deliver our luggage to the rooms. They asked us if we were in our rooms at that moment and when my husband replied that we were on our way, we were cut off. We tried to call back, and were put on hold, so we gave up.

We were given two rooms at one of the Trinidad buildings. The rooms were on the first floor where we had stayed previously and we were pleased at first. We called for the luggage and were told that it would be right over. The children settled in front of the TV in their room and my husband and I washed up in our room to await the luggage. We were to head out to the food court for dinner as it was already 7:30 pm.

Almost immediately, my husband started having breathing troubles and coughing. We waited for over an hour for our luggage . In the meantime, we both started coughing, throats were burning and the rooms had an overall damp/musty smell. I starting looking around the room and discovered black mold growing around the ceilings wallpaper border. I checked the kids room and they reported coughing, sneezing and burning throats also. Once again, I found mold all around the ceiling. I had also noticed that the smoke alram was hanging off our wall and wondered if maybe the sprinklers had been set off somehow and caused the damp room.

With a second call for luggage delivery, my husband asked about getting another room and was told the resort was booked solid.
When our luggage finally arrive, my husband pointed out the mold to the porter. Before we knew what was going on, that guy had us moving to new rooms in the same building. He told the front desk that they needed to get a crew over to our rooms ASAP to rid of the mold. He also told us that this was not the first time the resort has had this problem. The porter was great! He sent us(the children and myself) on over to the food court and took care of getting our luggage transferred into the new rooms. He took my husband over to pick up the new keys and then dropped him off at the food court.

Speaking of the food court. Things have changed there as well. The food was still OK, but the new system of ordering your food, receiving it and then going over to wait in another line to pay for the food was horrible. By the time we waited to pay, then get our drinks (because you cannot get cups ahead of time - the cashier has them) and then found a clean table, our food was heading toward the cold stage. The eatery was nasty dirty and I believe there was vomit near our table.

We walked back to our room. The beach area seem to be a little run down, but we didn't see all of the grounds this trip. The pool area was packed as there was live music. We would have stayed if it were not for the fact that we needed to get back and make sure our new rooms had our luggage.

When we returned to our new rooms after dinner, we could see all 11 pieces of our luggage through the window in one room, but none of our room keys opened that door. We went around the corner to the other room and one of the keys worked. We called the front desk and were told that new keys would be right over. We waited another half hour before someone finally brought keys. Our heads were hanging with fatigue.

The rooms were clean and smelled great! We sorted the luggage and were in the bed by 11:00 pm...slept great with no respiratory problems. The beds were very comfortable!

BTW - Both my daughter and I found long hairs on our pillow before retiring. YUCK!

I really hesitated to write such a bad review of a place that we have previously loved, however, I felt that visitors need to know about the mold. I don't blame the resort for the mold problem. Unless a Mousekeeper or a guest report the mold, CBR would have a hard time knowing about the problem. The Mousekeepers are in and out of rooms all day long and I doubt they ever inspect the rooms carefully. Not only that, I am sure that their sense of smell is diminished because of the cleaning products that they are in contact with all day long.

Our main beef is with the luggage delivery, food court and the lack of response with the front desk when we reported the problem with mold and our locked room. The porter was able to get immediate response when we couldn't. Wish I knew his name!

On a side note...We had reservations for luggage pick-up at 8:30 am the following morning. We had a limo arriving at 9:00 at the Welcome center. After our past luggage experience, my husband called to check on the pick-up status before bedtime and then again the next morning. We shouldn't have worried as they were right on time. They even shuttled us over to the Welcome center where our limo had just arrived. We rode up along side the limo and transferred passengers and luggage directly over.

Even with our bad experience, we would probably stay at CBR again IF we ever go back to Disney.

Sorry to hear about your problem. The mold would have bothered me too and the attitude of the front desk would have even bothered me more, particularly when they lied and said that no other rooms were available.

Do hotels have someone do an inspection of rooms at least a few times a year? It seems like that would make sense, particularly when a room hasn't been used for a while. It doesn't seem like a lot of common complaints - mold, outlets not working, etc. - would be caught if there was some kind of room inspection.

We stayed at the CBR twice and didn't care for it, and the second time was free! I just wanted to thank you for your honest report - we all need to hear the truth.

Sorry to hear that your visit was not the way it should have been.

Many people like the way the food court is now. There used to be many complaints from people when you had to pay at each station.

As far as the mold in the room, did you ask to speak with a manager when they told you the resort was totally booked? I suggest writing a letter to the manager of CBR. You didn't really give them a chance to make it right for you. Be sure to mention the wait for the room key also.

When we were at CBR a few years ago, the room was womderful, except one thing--the air conditioner seemed to be leaking and in one area I stepped and the floor was soaked. It was a by chance thing that I stepped on it because it wasn't in a traffic area. I discovered this at night when we were going to bed, and I wouldn't have known it at all if I hadn't happened to step right in that one particular spot. I called the FD and they asked if it would be ok until morning or did I want someone to come right then. I said they could come in the morning and while we were park hopping during the day they dried the area and fixed the problem because it was fine rest of the stay. If I had not called or known, it may have started to produce mold eventually. But CBR was great about fixing it and I have no qualms about returning, in fact my sister will be there this year and we decided to split part of our stay between BWI and CBR so we could be together--in fact just did that a few minutes ago. So now my trip is 7 nights at BWI and 3 nights CBR. (I still love CBR)

We liked the way it was the old way. Pay, get hot food, sit down.

The hotel had every chance to make it right for us and they did by getting us new rooms. When my DH asked if there were other rooms, he didn't specifically ask to be moved...yet. We wanted to get our luggage first, before asking about changing rooms. The only way that the hotel could have made things completely right, would have been to give us our rooms free or some kind of comp. That's OK though as it turned out alright in the end. There is no need to send any type of letter as we reported the problem and it should be taken care of for the next guest. As I said before, we will probably never visit Disney again unless we bring our grandchildren (we don't have any yet and I can't see my DH wanting to do that anyway).:teeth:

I like the way the food court is set up now. I can get food from different stations and pay for them all at once at the register.

Sorry your stay wasn't pleasant. I gave CBR a second chance and they still failed me. I don't think CBR likes us. Too bad cause I really like the ambience of this resort.

I guess if we had little kids, I can see your point and the food court payment system.
In our case, we just gave our kids some money and they went to where they wanted to eat. Imagine our surprise when they came over to us with their trays of food and said we had to pay elsewhere. They had to wait for us to get our food. Then will all went over and waited in a long line to pay. I think we got there just when all the guest from park closings arrived (would have been there sooner if our luggage had arrived on time .)Also, someone in the food court told my son that he would have to buy the mug to get a drink. I sent him over to the drink machines to look for paper cups and he returned saying there were none. We were all ready to fork out money for the mugs (that would not have been a good investment for our short stay) when I decided to ask the check out lady about paper cups.

We haven't stayed there in quite a few years, but on our last visit my daughter wanted to have dinner one night at the restaurant there. She has always had fond memories of our stays at CBR. We didn't like it at all, in fact did not like the whole new set-up of the food court and the new restaurant, Shutters. Too bad Disney thinks they always have to keep changing things. Sometimes things are best just the way they are.

Sorry to hear that you had a less than pleasant stay there. Hope Disney does something about the mold, they really need to.

We will never, ever, stay there again...I don't care if it was free!!
Let me tell you about my terrible experience last year.

When my mother and children got separated from me at the DTD bus stop and I finally made it back to the room, they weren't there so when I call the front desk frantic they sent out a "search party" It was 2am when the security guards found them waiting for me at one of the bus stops at CBR (of course I couldn't find the same one twice because I was not given a map and didn't know one existed until I saw someone walking around with one so we missed each other). My mom said they sat there for two hours and no one asked them if they needed any help. Plenty of employees passed her and would speed by before she could get their attention.

So back to when the security guards found them they asked her who she was and what room she was in to verify and said "okay your daughter is waiting for you back in your room" They didn't even take them over (like the front desk told me they would) here it is 2am and my mother is alone with two small children and no strollers (I had the strollers when we got separated on the bus) and they just left them there!!!! It still makes me angry.

They did their best to make it right, I have to give them that, but we will not stay at that resort again. It was clean and the theming was nice but the customer service (or lack of) the entire trip was unacceptable.

Aren't all the food courts at WDW like this now - pay at the exit? I know AKL and POR are at least...

We always request not to be on the first floor at WDW - my daughter is sensitive to mold, and can't tolerate the dampness of the first floor. Don't forget that WDW was built on a swamp!

I'm sitting here reading all these posts and my chin is on the floor. I was going to make my reservation today to stay at CBR in October but now I'm seriously having second thoughts.

Rhonda922, for every report where people were dissatisfied you will find many more people that had a great time.

No matter what resort you stay at if there are problems contact the management and let them make it right for you.

Thanks so much for posting your report! I appreciate ALL reports, always helpful in the planning stages. Thanks again, I think you handled your situation very well::yes::

Sorry about your problems but unfortunately this could of happened at any of the resorts. The food courts are the same at all of the value and modert resorts that I know of. Going 9/9 and staying at CBR and can't wait. This will be my 8th trip and 1st time at CBR. Tried in the past to stay there but hotel was always booked up.

A few weeks ago we stayed at CR for 3 nts. We were given a room in the south wing. The air conditioner was very noisy and vibrated the whole room. After laying down none of us could go to sleep from the beds vibrating. We called the front desk and was told that they were booked solid and didn't have a different room and was put on hold to see what they could do (this was the night of july 3rd). After being on hold forever I hung up and called right back, i got a different cm who upgraded us to a tower room at no extra cost for the rest of our stay. She sent someone to help with our luggage, he said he could not believe how much the floor shook when he walked across it and would report it to maintance to check it out.

We stayed at CBR last yr for 7 nts and loved it. It is one of our favorites.

Rhonda,

It hasn't been my experience that WDW management always makes something right. As some of these messages point out, so much depends on getting the right person at the right time and that's, just, chance.

Please don't use my review for a bases on whether you stay at CBR or not.
We loved the CBR before and probably would have had a great stay in our new rooms had we been vacationing longer.
Just request a second floor room.

Schmeck - As for the food courts, we have never been to a food court that operated that way (other than the Poly, never been to any other resorts at Disney) and we liked the old food court better. That is just our opinion. What we really didn't like was the cleanlinest.

S. C. - I had to laugh when I read your air problem. While we were walking back from the food court, we saw mechanics taking two old air conditioners out of a building and replacing them with new. I made the comment to my husband that the units looked like they were covered in mold.

It upsets me when people have a "bad experience" somewhere and then they write about it here and start scaring people off...things happen and people get mad and then take it out on the entire resort. These things can happen at ANY resort, and you know why? Because people that work at all the resorts are HUMAN and make mistakes, just like anyone else.

It is unfortunate when it is your trip and something less than desirable happens, but you should not condemn the entire place. Choosing not to return to a resort is of course your choice. Everyone needs to remember that opinions are just that, opinions. What happened to one party will most likely not happen to you. When it does, that is when there is a resort-wide problem, that is a different story, but, as Safetymom so eloquently put it, the good reports on CBR outweigh the bad. Please read the incidents and put them into perspective--was it something that was isolated? In most cases that is the case. I have never had a problem at any Disney resort, everything has always been perfect, and especially at CBR.

When people have something happen that upsets or irritates them, they tend to flame the resort. They let their anger overcome their rationality. It is human nature. Had I listened to some of the bad things I had heard before I tried CBR, I may never had tried it, but I did and I am glad I did, as it a favorite resort of our family.

If you go back and read my review, you will see that I stuck up for CBR many times.

The bad needs to be reported along with the good. I have posted many reports about my travel experiences, some good, some not so good. That's what message boards are for. Then, a person can decide if they want to try giving a business a chance! A perfect example is with FL TOURS. They got some really bad reviews along with some good. I decided to give them a chance since they were board sponsors. We had great service from them. I would give CBR another chance and ask for second floor rooms next time

The reason that I reported my experience is to warn other travelers that they could have a problem with moldy rooms. Anyone that has asthma or allergies should be aware. Had we not changed rooms, my family could have ended up in the ER during the night. All three of my children and myself have asthma. Ironically, it was my husband that first had symptoms and he doesn't have asthma.

Not only did we report the problem, but another poster or two have had the same experience. Even the baggage porter told me that CBR has had this problem before as he has had to move other guest to higher floors. Yes, it is bound to happen at any resort where there is a humidity problem, but I didn't go to another resort.

Once again, we loved CBR previously and we were fine once we were given the new rooms. Had we planned to stay longer, we would have been quite happy with CBR. We may not have eaten dinner at the food court again, though.

As for the luggage trouble, that's just poor managment...period! Lesson learned - don't store your luggage if you can help it.
