Cats: # of litterboxes to # of cats

we have 2 cats and 2 boxes. We scoop every day, but if we fall asleep without doing it, we're ok for another day. Interestingly, they always pee in one box and poop in the other.

3 cats (1 male, 2 females) 1 litterbox. We use the Breeze system; it is awesome!! Our baby, a blue-cream Persian, was having some "issues" using the regular box. She hated stepping on "clumps" and would hold her tinkle until the box was cleaned, even though it was cleaned daily, causing a UTI. Went to the Breeze system, no more smelly tinkle from my male cat and no more accidents or UTIs for our baby. Just my 2cents!

Growing up my family had 4 cats and we had 5 boxes. We had an extra box in the garage which got used the most for some odd reason.

How often do you have to wash out the bottom of the pan? I use liners now with the Tidy Cat scoopable. I love just being able to pick up the whole liner and dump out the litter. But, even with ONE cat, it is waaaay to dusty. I've been thinking of switching over to the Breeze system, but I don't know that's I'd want to wash it out often enough to Kitty's liking.

The experts recommend one box per cat, plus one.

I have 2 cats. I have 3 boxes. One in the utility room (on the opposite side of the room from the washer and dryer) and one in each bathroom. They are large, uncovered and scooped daily (sometimes twice a day). I use a clumping litter with little dust and NO perfumes. I only have one story, but if I had more, you can bet I would defintely have at least one on each level.

Anyone getting away with less is lucky, and I would be willing to wager the happy situation won't last forever. (What is WITH the boxes in the basement? I don't get it - it's not convenient to clean or for the cat to access :confused3) I am always amazed by the number of owners who INSIST they can't fit another box, and certainly not somewhere else in the house...until something important gets peed on. Then they start listening, have a proper box, use proper litter, have enough boxes, scoop daily and the cat miraculously starts using the box again. Hmm, go figure. ;)

3 cats and 3 litter boxes and they use all 3. One's upstairs and the other 2 are in the basement. My cats are all boys.

We also have 3 cats, 3 boxes. One on main level, other 2 upstairs (different rooms, though). We have 1 male, 2 females. They use the downstairs one the most, followed by the upstairs bonus room one. The one we wish they would use the most (covered, hidden in the master bath) gets the least action. I scoop them all at least once a day.

Never heard of Breeze so I googled it. I do use Tidy Cat scoopable with liners. Interesting. Not having litter tracked would be wonderful.

Wouldn't it? I've read good & bad things about it. Some cats never adapt to the pellets. If you have a cat that likes to dig to China, you will always need 1 1/2 - 2 bags of the pellets. Plus, if your cat tends to pee in one spot in the box, you need to turn the pee pads around to use the other side. Tidy Cat actually was giving refunds a while back to people who would call up & complain that their cat did NOT make the change over at all. Not sure if they are still doing that.

Here's a couple of real old threads that other DISers posted about the Tidy Cat Breeze system:

Maybe some of them will give an update on how it's been working for them? :scratchin

My recommendation is:

# of litter boxes = # cats + 1

3 cats, 3 boxes, all one one floor and in the same location. My kitties all drag their lazy butts downstairs to poo. :thumbsup2 I've seen all of them, at one time or another, use each box, so I'm not sure they have a favorite. Since my furboys are poopers, I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving them for more than 48hours without adding another box. Since we take weekend trips, that's very important to me.

And oh....the kitty litter tracking is terrible, but I love Fresh Step and don't want to change.

For those who use liners, do the cats not claw through to them? All my kitties still have their claws, and I'm afraid I'd have a mess on my hands if I used the liners.

We have a pee'er and our most recent tactic is 3 cats, 6 litter boxes, before this we had 4 boxes, we added 2 about a month ago. None of them covered and we use unscented litter (Johnny Cat).

We have a single story house, the boxes are in just about every room of the house and are scooped daily.
So far, it has worked.

The unscented litter IMO is soooo much better than the deodorized stuff that I could smell as soon as I walked in the door. Now, there is no telltale smell of cat box. There is one box (the original box) that gets pooped in the most but we have noticed in the past week that they are spreading out and each one seems to have a favorite.

3 cats with 3 litter boxes. All three litter boxes are used daily and each cleaned daily. Sometimes more than once a day since oldest cat is such a princess who refuses to get her tooties dirty. :headache:

I moved the box they have been using last night into the upstairs bathroom next to the other box they hadn't really been using. They watched me do it and were all curious of course. Spent a few minutes in the bathroom playing with them so they could get the scent.

Noticed one walking into other bathroom a couple of times and meowing looking for box, so I would carry him upstairs to remind him, but he didn't use it.

Eventually last night, he did use the box in the new location. :thumbsup2 The other one doesn't seem to mind me moving anything on him at all. In a couple of days, I'll probably remove the 2nd box if I see they are still just using 1. Keeping it for when we go on vacation was a good idea.

We've got 2 cats and 3 boxes. 2 boxes are side-by-side in the laundry room and the 3rd is upstairs. Our cats seem to have the need to go at the same time and do NOT want to share! All 3 boxes get used.

We have 3 cats and 2 litter boxes in the same spare room upstairs. We started off with 2 because one of my boys was picky about what type of litter he used. Now all 3 use the same. Its funny, if someone goes in to pee and one box is being used, they usually wait so they can pee on top of the last one. But trust me, both get used each day frequently.

One cat, one box. I actually just got my kitty on Tuesday so I guess we'll see how that works out.
