Catfishing

So I was watching that MTV show Catfish where people are pretending to be somebody they aren't and then there are subtle signs that lead the person to be a little suspicious and then its discovered they aren't who they said they are. So this show got me thinking...

Have any of you guys got catfished by someone whether it be on these boards or anywhere else? I have had it happen to me a few times, and I can't help but think there are other people on this board who have probably had someone catfish them.

I like to think my BS radar still works OK. That said, I'm naturally suspicious of people who hide their profile...

I'm also baffled why people would go to such lengths to be someone else, I use enough energy just being myself

Mine works pretty decently too. I'm generally suspicious of people who can't keep their stories straight, or you can tell they are half-truths but you can also tell they are pulling certain stories from other peoples lives and trying to make it their own.

I feel like people who do those kinds of things may be bored or are unsatisfied with how things are going for them so they make up a life that would sound more appealing.. but I guess no one really knows why someone does something unless they say why.

Otherwise it's just trolling. Or regular internet b.s..

However I am someone who tends not to trust people even in person.

I'm sure someone has lied to me on the internet. In the falsified identity sense? I don't know.

I'm protective of my kids. I don't like to have detailed open profiles for this reason. We don't let them on the internet or fb. I don't like to give out too many details about them (though sometimes I forget when I'm just discussing things) because it is unsafe to tell internet strangers who you are, where you live, who your kids are.

I consider the term catfish for romantic purposes. Happily married, so I have never been catfished.

Are some people on public forums not who they say they are? Oh yeah! Without a doubt I've encountered that.

I know I've been trolled. No big deal, though - it was just another community board where trolls are rampant. I don't meet anyone I talk to online in real life, and I prefer to keep my details private because I'm slightly paranoid about internet weirdos. I've actually revealed more here than most other places I go, because Disney fans are all good, right??
