Two days ago, my father (74) had cataract surgery. When he went bacck for follow-up the next day, they said his surgery had gone "bad" and the cataract had broken up and had pieces floating in his eye. He had to go to another specialist, go back in, and is having more surgery today. I've never heard of this-cataract surgery going "bad". Has anyone else experienced it or heard of it? Is this a serious complication or does it happen frequently? I'm 2000 miles away from elderly parents and sometimes things get lost in translation. Can anyone help me understand this?

A friend's mom had trouble with her cataract surgery. I don't know exactly what happened but she had to go through 3 separate surgeries before they were satisfied with the results. This was the past fall and she is doing fine now.

This hits close to home. My husband had his surgery yesterday and goes in for his checkup this morning. I HOPE everything is ok. If it is he has his other eye done next week.

I am so sorry, I know how it is to be concerned about a dear parent, and living far away must be difficult  . I have known many people, incl my Mom, who had this surgery, but truthfully, have never heard of anything more serious than floaters. I hope you get some replies who can offer info and help put your mind at ease. I'm sending prayers your Dad's way.

Good luck to him! Please post the results. I'm so sorry to remind you it doesn't always go well. This is the first I've heard of it. Hopefully your DH will be OK.

My grandmother has this happen to her and honestly in my opinion it depends on the quality of the doctor. Her regular eye doctor is a yutz who messed up her eye taking the cataract off and dropped it, where it disengrated into several pieces. She was also sent to a specialist who "picked" out the pieces. Now on my grannys part her eye has never gotten better but that could be from other complications including mini-strokes. Have your mother or father give written permission to the office so the office may discuss the treatment and results with you. Good luck :grouphug:

His checkup went well. He now has 20/25 vision out of the corrected eye and the Dr. said that should even improve over time. The left eye will be done next week.

When we were driving he commented that now when he closes his fixed eye and looks out of what WAS his good eye he can hardly see. That's how bad the corrected eye was. It's scary that he was still driving!! :sad2: MEN!! He is only 57 and thought he was too young for cataracts.

I'm 43 & 2 weeks ago I found out I have cateracts. They are small but I thought the same thing.

Thought I'd post an update about my husbands cataract surgery. He has had his second eye done and on his follow up appointment he tested 20/20 in both eyes! He's not legally blind any more. He is so thrilled with the results.
