Sigh.

My roommate has a cat. I LOVE this cat, however my roommate decided to get this cat and she doesn't want to pay the pet deposit to our landlord. So, she's trying to keep the cat locked in her room. Needless to say, this is a horrible idea, and it's not working. Really not working.

I came home yesterday to her cat having used the restroom on my bed. MY BED! Last week, the cat did #2 in my bathroom. I had a long talk to my roomie about this, told her she had to pay the pet deposit, that this can't happen again. Later in the week, there was cat urine in the bottom bathroom, no litter box.

URGH.

Did I mention that my bedsheets are brand new. I bought them on Friday, and now they are in the wash to HOPEFULLY get out the urine smell. I bought "Nature's Miracle" and have sprayed the bed MANY times today and still have a big yellow stain. This stuff isn't cheap, and personally I am going to blow my top with her when she gets home.

Is there ANYTHING to get this stuff out of my mattress? I know I am going to be sleeping on the couch for the next couple of days, until we go to Disney so hopefully it can airdry ... Did I mention this was a pretty expensive mattress with a pillow top. I'm trying to keep my cool.

Also, since she won't pay the pet deposit ... is there any way I can go to the landlord and get out of this lease? Sigh.

Thanks in advance!

Wow! Can't help you with the not killing the room mate thing because that is EXACTLY what I'd want to do!

Why doesn't she have a litter box?! What does she expect the poor cat to do, toilet train himself? Really, cats are exceptionally clean animals. All they need is a box and clean litter. They much prefer it to having "accidents" in their living space. If I were you, I'd take care of it myself. I know it is her cat but it's better than what you're going through now.

As for your mattress, I don't think anything will permenantly remove the odor or stain. Try covering it in baking soda and leaving it for a few days and then vaccuum. I don't know though. It's going to be tough to get rid of.

Good luck!

When I had dd5, my kitty was not happy about the new addition and made his displeasure known by using my bed as a litter box. We used an enzyme based cleaner designed for cat urine and then steam cleaned the mattress using one of those rug shampooers they rent at home depot (rug doctor, I think). Use the upholstry attatchment to go all over the mattress. This worked well for us and there was no smell/stain after steam cleaning. HTH.

make sure you saturate the area with the natural stuff. You can clean it with some cleaner and then saturate it, it has to go deep to kill the smell.

Roomate might have to be killed but at least you get a pet out of it :rotfl2: . No really roomate needs to get a litter box and help the kitty AND pay the deposit.

Put a diaper on the cat, seriously. Put a diaper on the cat and wrap duct tape around it to keep it on.:thumbsup2

my cat went we we all over my suit cases:sick: .. so I tried soaking it in vinagar in the hot hot sun.. it worked just a smige.. Then I tried soaking it in uruin gone :confused3 in the hot hot sun and it worked.... better. my moms new suit case I had to throw away:sick:

I had the same issue with a new puppy and had a carpet cleaner co. come over and clean my mattress. They even got the stain out.

My vet highly recommends urine off. It breaks down the stuff that makes cats go back to the same spot. The company guarantee the product too! They have a web site too, I think it's urineoff.com (don't forget the WWW part), wasn't sure if I could put the direct link in.

You have to really soak it with Nature's Miracle and then let it dry on its own. The spray bottle doesn't work that well, you'll probably have to open the top and pour it on.

Sorry about that!

I guess I should mention that she does have a litter box, that she keeps locked in her room. Sigh

It looks like other than killing my roomie, I am going to have to have my roomie rent a steam cleaner, buy some more miracle crud ... and pay the deposit. If she doesn't pay the deposit, I am going to go to the landlord and ask to get out of the lease. Not sure if it will work, but I can try. Maybe the threat will be enough to make my roomie see the light.

If you tell the landlord, can't he just bill her for the deposit?

I totally agree with this. Absolutely saturate it. It may take a few weeks for it to completely dry and the smell will remain until it is 100% dry, but when it does dry, the smell will be gone forever. That stuff really is a miracle!

As for the roommate, I'd put in a call to the landlord tomorrow and tell him she has a cat and doesn't want to tell him. Let him deal with her and the pet deposit issue.

It's VERY hard to get rid of urine odor. It seems to come back when it's humid out. I tried everything from vinegar to nature's miracle to professional cleaning and the smell never went away.

Amber listerine- even store brand will get it out. 3 parts listerine to 4 parts water dilution. Allow to dry. Long story but it got the odor out of leather= both being notoriously hard to clean. Darn cats.

If your roommate doesn't want to pay the pet deposit, why have the cat? I can only imagine how frustrating that is for you. (and the kitty for that matter! S/he sounds stressed)

I once had a roommate that had a pomeranean (sp?) anyway basically the same problem. I would come in from class or work before she did every night and the darn dog would have poo everywhere. I simply got tired of cleaning it up. I MOVED!

Just report it to the landlord. Then your roommate either pays the deposit, or gets evicted. Simple!

I have a MUCH better idea than Murder. Just get rid of the cat!! It wasn't invited. Nor has the pet deposit been paid. Your things are being ruined. Solution remove the cat from your leased homed.

If the roommate doesn't like it, then the roomie needs to go, NOT you!! And ask for 1/2 the deposit/cleaning fee.

For the mattress I would add Fabreeze to help kill any left over oder!

Simple phone call to the landlord would have her evicted. Or paying the pet fee.
Why isn't there a litter box? and if she is staying in one room how is she peeing all over the place?
Cats are usually pretty smart and get it very quickly once they know where it is (and it is CLEANED PROPERLY)

But funny story to me(not my roomie) we had 2 cats. My cat hated her. And to show her dislike she peeed on her bed! I PAID to have it cleaned professionally. Hey it was my cat. And she started keeping her door locked. But it kept happening. Well then we discovered the cats (hers and mine) were climbing out onto the roof and walking around to get into her window from the roof!

Be careful with going to your landlord. If you are both on the same lease then technically you are both responsible for the cat and the pet deposit no matter who owns it. Just like you would both be responisible for damage to the house no matter who caused it. If you're on separate leases then you're ok.

This is why I never let my roomate get a cat ... I knew there would be problems.. ICK! Good luck anyhow. I second the steam cleaning option. At least you know the place will be disinfected. If you can't keep the cat out of your room consider covering your bed with a tarp during the day. Annoying, but easier than dealing with cat pee everywhere.

Ex-It dry cleaner's spray. No saturating needed. Spray the spot and wash as usual. If you can't find it locally, you can order it online.

I'm sure it's entirely toxic, but the smell is gone before it goes in the wash. It even removed the vomit smell from car upholstery. Right now, besides the utter disgust, you're probably all thinking I lead a very glamorous life... ;)
