When I was a little kid I LOVED Cat Stevens. When he converted to Islam years ago, I already had stopped listening to him. When he approved of the fatwa on Salman Rushdie's head years ago, I was disgusted with him (although, he did take that back a few years ago).

Just wanted to share the article and see what your comments are, if any.

Cat Stevens, on Watch List, Diverts Plane

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=495&u=/ap/20040922/ap_en_mu/plane_diverted_4&printer=1

By LESLIE MILLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A plane bound for Washington from London was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after passenger Yusuf Islam — formerly known as pop singer Cat Stevens (news) — showed up on a U.S. watch list, federal officials said.

United Airlines Flight 919 had already taken off from London en route to Dulles International Airport when the match was made between the passenger and the watch list, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.

The plane was met by federal agents at Maine's Bangor International Airport around 3 p.m., Melendez said.

Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the individual as Islam.

One official said Islam, 56, was identified by the Advanced Passenger Information System, which requires airlines to send passenger information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's National Targeting Center. TSA was then contacted and requested that the plane land at the nearest airport, the official said.

"He was interviewed and denied admission to the United States on national security grounds," said Homeland Security spokesman Dennis Murphy. He said the man would be put on the first available flight out of the country Wednesday.

Islam, who was born Stephen Georgiou, took Cat Stevens as a stage name and had a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s, including "Wild World" and "Morning Has Broken." Last year he released two songs, including a re-recording of his '70s hit "Peace Train," to express his opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites).

He abandoned his music career in the late 1970s and changed his name after being persuaded by orthodox Muslim teachers that his lifestyle was forbidden by Islamic law. He later became a teacher and an advocate for his religion, founding a Muslim school in London in 1983.

Islam recently condemned the school seizure by militants in Beslan, Russia, earlier this month that left more than 300 dead, nearly half of them children.

In a statement on his Web site, he wrote, "Crimes against innocent bystanders taken hostage in any circumstance have no foundation whatsoever in the life of Islam and the model example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him."

I just read the article on CNN and called my DH down to read it.

I adored Cat Stevens for many years (I was stuck on Cat Stevens, Elton John, and Linda Ronstadt...my age is showing!), but I got completely turned off to him with the whole Rushdie thing. Couldn't even listen to him anymore.

I'd never recognize him by that picture on CNN. I'll have to find an old picture and compare them.

I do wonder why they denied him admission.

I had a cat when i was kid and called him cat stevens

I heard reported that he is on a terrorist watch list. :(

IMHO, it's a little scary that they don't check their lists until after the flights take off! Could be too late, you know?

My DH is a huge cat Stevens fan...he still will listen to his old albums once in awhile.

I want to know why he is on the watch list...also why was the match made after he was on a plane and in the air. Shouldn't stuff like that be caught BEFORE the plane takes off?

yeah, you are right. . .but, that's assuming that these security people are infallible, which they're not. Also, I really don't know what the security is like in London or if the security there has changed in the past several years as it has here. If one is traveling from another country and they are free to board a plane THERE, but not welcome in the country they desire to go, is it standard procedure to check at the departure point?

Really, though, when someone is walking through the gate with long flowing robes with the last name of "Islam", isn't that worth checking the terrorist list?

Yes, I heard he was on a Watch List...but for what reason? What has he done to warrant being on the list?

He hasn't done anything and shouldn't have been singled out like that.

I don't really care and don't think the public at large has a "right to know" why people are on the list. I trust that there's a good reason.

And you know this... how exactly?

How do you know what he has done or not done? CNN shows a picture of him speaking at the Islamic Society of North America in 2003. I haven't looked them up, but do you know if they are connected to any terror groups? Has he spoken anywhere else?

He's a major anti-war (America in Iraq--who knows how he feels about Jihad) activist, and speaks out against America. He is not an American citizen. He has a madrassah in England (of course, he calls it a school), and was known to be an extremist.

Writing bad music?

I'm from Bangor Maine.... I wonder where they would hold someone like this here. Our dinky little jail downtown?

according to the radio news, he's on the terrorist watch list because of donations to groups linked to terrorism. the news also said that he is on the 'do not admit' list because of these donations. the idea seems to be to keep him from doing something.

............... A government official said Islam was on the watch list because of "known associations and financial support to organizations believed to be aiding terrorism."

According to U.S. officials, he is an active supporter of Muslim charities.

One administration official said the singer had been in the United States as recently as May, and was a recent addition to the list......
I liked him as a singer many years ago, but things do change, people do change.

Ah, but then they are accused of "profiling"

The person below hadn't done anything either. Would it have been prudent to err on the side of caution and detain him? According to your sentiments....probably not. But, to each his/her own I guess.
