Cat people.....my cat has a large lump on the side of his throat...UPDATE PG2

My SIL had a cat with a tumor but his was on his face above the eye. The vet told her that it could be removed but that it would be a lot worse than just letting it run it's course (medical reasons and I'm sure some financial reasons). It got worse and worse for several years.

I'm sorry to say that she finally had to put her cat down because it eventually took over a large part of his skull. He couldn't see or hear or eat. This progressed over 5 years or so, though. She couldn't afford surgery for the cat so it wasn't an option, not sure if it would have changed the outcome. Sorry for the bad news, maybe your situation is different or maybe surgery will correct your cat's tumor. Good luck.

Oh darn, I'm sorry that it wasn't an outcome with a quick and positive resolution.
DO give the whole course af antibiotics though just in case it is infection related.
As far as surgery is concerned I'm sure that your Vet will be able to give you a better idea after the Biopsy comes back. At that point you'll know more of what you're facing and will be able to make an informed decision based on what's best for you and your pet.

So sorry to hear about Boo Boo! I had a dog with what turned out to be a cyst over the eye. The vet said it was a tumer and wanted to remove his eye. Thank God I told her I couldn't make that decision right then and insisted on giving him heavy duty doses of antibiotics in the meantime. The cyst went down after about a week and never came back so follow your instincts.

Unfortunately 1 of my 3 cats developed lymphoma in April and died in August at age 15. I spent a lot of money but do not regret it because it could have gone either way. He actually was doing very well for several months and the day before he died took a sudden turn for the worse.

Now my 17 year old baby is sick........supposedly inflammatory bowel disease but the vet warns it is very fine line between that and cancer.

I forgot about the other lump I found on my sick cat's neck in June. He had a large, hard lump under the skin. The vet told me it was the result of having a feeding tube there for a week. Seemed awful big to me but eventually it opened up and started draining. Vet still claimed it was from the tube and I just needed to keep cleaning it.

Was cleaning it one day and thought I saw something inside the wound - and it turned out to be a 2 inch blande of grass ! He apparently got it in there sometime before the opening healed up on the inside of his neck (after eating grass) and of course it created an infection. Guess that can't be an option for your Boo Boo but I always take the first diagnoses with a grain of salt. Vets cannot always be certain what they are looking at, even the specialists, and some things change over time. Will say a prayer for Boo Boo.

If it is hard, it is highly likely it is a malignant tumor. I worked at one of the largest anmial medical centers years ago, and I would see a lot of these types of cases.

I want to also tell you that if it "just appeared" then it means that it is possibile that it is agressive - meaning it will grow pretty quickly.

I would be checking to find the best oncology surgeons in your area. Not to say that this is the problem, but I like to be more agressive when treating something like this because the sooner you tackle it the better the outcome can be in a lot of cases.

She is about 12 years old, she eats like a horse, drinks like a fish, and uses the litter box quite often. It doesn't seem to bother her much other than when it itches her. She is a great cat and we love her a lot. We are new to this kind of thing and would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you for your time and God Bless!

Haven't you taken your cat to the vet yet? What did the vet say? Every new cat should visit the vet as soon as possible after you get them.

Lumps can have many causes, and only a vet is qualified to diagnose what's going on.

Also, it's somewhat unusual for cats to "drink like a fish". They normally don't drink water much at all, and are rarely observed at the water bowl. At age 12, if this cat is "drinking like a fish", I would be very concerned about kidney function. Do be sure to mention how much she drinks to the vet, as well!
