Castaway Cay cast members hurricane evacuation.

You know there are sites and apps where you can look up the elevation of anywhere on the planet, right? I looked up mine a few days ago - 30ft above sea level.

They can artificially increase the elevation and most likely did for the bunker. They have some of the best engineers in the world working for Disney - I don't believe they would have left them if the facility was not able to handle it.

Didn't they evacuate everyone from the island the last time a hurricane came by. I will lose a lot of respect for DCL if they don't get those young people off. The hurricane shelters are useless in a 20 foot surge and 180 MPH winds.

Some of these comments are so naive: "Castaway Cay is fine because the EYE will not hit it," "Disney has the BEST engineers, their bunker will OF COURSE survive."

The truth is that this storm may be the strongest ever in the Atlantic (currently 5mph shy of Allen). The winds, now at 220 mph gusts, are only 30 mph shy of the strongest wind ever recorded in human history. Castaway Cay is going to come within 20 miles of the eye, which is about as close to a direct hit as you can get. At the very least it is going to have to withstand strong tornado-level wind forces for over half a day. On top of all of this, there could be a 25 foot storm surge, which is higher than basically any point on the island, including the concrete reinforced bunker, wherever it is. Look at the images coming out of Abaco right now. 2 story buildings are underwater and some reinforced concrete structures have toppled. I hope everyone will be alright, and they probably will be. However, I also would not be surprised to get the news tomorrow that the CMs are dead. Not trying to paint a horrific picture. This is just what happens in these type of Cat 5 storms. No amount of wishful thinking and emotional investment/belief toward Disney can change reality.

Yes they did but this time they didn't and it's even closer than the last one. They're in the evacuation building but it's only 15 feet high. Not very good for a 20 ft surge.

What is wrong with you?? Did you really have to say that?? Move on...….

I'm not trying to be inconsiderate. However, the quicker and more accurately people paint the reality of Disney's negligence the better. Sugar coating and rose coloured glasses here (not you, but some) give Disney a pass. They should not have left anyone there with a possible Cat5 being clearly possible days ago. Even if everyone is okay they should face public backlash for endangering the employees. It is very likely that everyone will be fine, but not because of risk-justified precautions. Probably just luck that the storm wasn't 20 miles farther south.
You may not be trying to be inconsiderate but you are being inconsiderate. There is a parent here hoping for the best and you want to start a Disney war?
Once again, move on......

Maybe true, but this is not the time or place. Parents and loved ones are worried sick about what is happening right now and over the next 24 hours.

Adding to their distress is not right.

Don't be mad at me, be mad at Disney. Take to social media and maybe some news orgs will pick it up (already happening a bit) and Disney won't gamble with lives just so the island can be cleaned up a few days earlier.

Look it you stupid troll, this is not the place to be mad. This is a place for information and reassurance. You want to take to social media and take on Disney then start your own thread.
Now, PLEASE, move on!

Wow, this is super insensitive considering you already know a parent of someone on the island is on this board. Wrong. Just totally wrong.

Lol, dense? No. I just think this story is insane and horrific, and also think it is hugely unproductive and irresponsible for people to try to white knight Disney's actions by claiming their bunker strategy was risk-justified--it removes accountability and increases the likelihood that behavior will repeat. While calling a spade a spade may be callous and dickish (guilty), it also does society a solid by encouraging public support for accountability--awesome that there are some call outs on social media right now.

Ok. I'll spell it out for you.

To continue this line of discussion on this thread knowing that others are concerned about loved ones is DENSE and INCONSIDERATE and INAPPROPRIATE.

Take your issues somewhere else.

I agree the island should have been evacuated. Why take the risk? Why put these parents through this. It’s crazy you are considering some thoughtless comment as horrible (and perhaps it was) but the company that put them actually as risk, and they acknowledge is CAUSING their worry, is not thoughtless?
They are stranded, what if someone has a minor medical emergency (unrelated to the the hurricane) Disney can NOT do anything for days now.
No one, no one deserves to worry about a love one. No one deserve to be isolated without recourse just so Disney can clean up faster.
Build for the 5, but evacuate above a 3.

Guam designs for 190 mph standard design, really not that difficult with right materials. Tornado winds can reach 400-500 mph, can not design for that but hurricane winds should be ok. The problem is most carribean structures and a lot in the south are not designed correctly. You see these houses with roofs blown off, does not need to be that way with the correct detailing.
