Castaway cay 5k

so ive seen two different medals on instagram for poeple doing the 5k and i know i saw on here a few months ago about people only getting the plain black plastic one but nowi see people getting what looks like a colorful rubbery looking one so my question is which one is actually being given out right now

Rubber one in April. For a "free" event, it's a really neat souvenir. As this 5K has matured over the years, all of the extras have greatly improved. When I did it the first time a few years back, the only memento of the run was the bib...no medals, shirts, hats, pins or otherwise. The shirts still tend to be hit or miss in terms of what is available (two years ago when we were there, they had two different adult t-shirts in any and all sizes....but in April of this year, when I was expecting even more variety, all they had were red kids' sizes and some sort of ladies t-shirt that was for the marathon/5k combo...totally irrelevant in April, although people were buying it, obviously not having studied the shirt text too carefully!), but there is usually some sort of merch available to commemorate the draining of your body of every last ounce of sweat available from within you! They had plenty of pins and a few hats, too, even if the t-shirt selection was limited.

Aww, I'm sad I didn't participate. I want one of those rubber medals! Something to look forward to for my next DCL Caribbean cruise!

When are the Bibs given out? Is that when you register or when you arrive at the beginning of the race?

Just got home on Monday and yes, they still have the rubbery medals. They give out the bib numbers the morning of the race right before you exit the ship to run. It is HOT HOT HOT, but there is water four times from cups and there are two water coolers in the loop where you can get water as well. Drink it. Every time. Even if it is a few sips. It's a friendly race and people are good about cheering you on. Have fun, wear a hat, and don't forget to drink your water.

I've done the free 5K four times, and the coolers in the loop were not always "open". They had covers over them and weren't ready to be used. So don't expect those to be usable. Drink the water outside the loop where the CMs are. As Bruiser indicated, you'll pass by that table 4 times (in loop, out of loop to right, back to go in the loop, back out of the loop turning left to the finish) .

You may have seen cooler metals back in Febuary... They had a special metal if you ran the Princess Half Marathon weekend in WDW then took the cruise and did the castaway cay 5K.... A" special" metal.

I just remeber there being a post a while back that disney was being cheap and was giving out a cheap plastic mickey head "medal" a few months back so thats why i was asking to see if those were still being given out. But wish i was doing the actual wdwmarathon and then the cruise so i could get one of those fancy medals haha

You sign up for the 5k at whatever desk is located on your personal navigator. Then, on CC day, you are to meet at a designated location (bring your excursion for 5k ticket!) and when you turn that in at the location is when you'll be getting the bib
If you sign up last minute, they may not have a bib ... I think they print those based off of the pre-registering numbers for the 5k

After you finish. ( not that I have ever done it... But read enough and seem people still in the running outfit w/ metals.

What you're calling the regular plastic medal is NEW. That showed up with the first Castaway Cay Challenge during the January marathon weekend. In the month or so following that race (including the CCChallenge after Princess in Feb) the ships got stock of the new *rubber* medal. And that is the new medal for the free Castaway Cay 5k.

This picture is from a Dis'er (who is localish to me and did the same race that I did the following 2 years...the other medal in the picture) and shows the older "medal", which is just a flat plastic mickey head with a sticker on it and a "winner" lanyard. They also use that medal to give to "hoops contest" winners, to trivia winners, etc.

To be clear, the metal medal AZlady showed* is for having signed up for something during January marathon weekend (and, last year at least, Princess, but that doesn't look likely this year) as well as for a PAID 5K on CCay on a certain Dream sailing. The metal one is for the Challenge, of doing at least 2 runs, one being on the island. (and paying for it all)

The rubber one is the 5K medal, and is now the replacement for the free island "5K" run, ever since Januaryish.



*the metal necklace in the pic I shared is for Tacoma's You Go Girl run. Nothing to do with Disney at all.

The bibs they had in a huge pack. They had two at the race last weekend. One had about 15 left over from previous races and then they opened a new pack of about 100. They buy them in bulk.
