Cashiers-do you do this?

See the quoted posts above yours. They didn't even bother giving their opinions. Opinions are fine. I didn't apologize for people having opinions that are different. There is nothing wrong with a difference of opinion. It's when someone thinks the OP's post is bizarre or odd, or "in the grand scheme of things not important..." that is what I'm talking about, not a difference of opinion. I always feel bad for the OP when people say things like that.

Actually, she didn't really ask for an opinion, she said she wondered shy cashiers didn't do that? To me it was a very silly thing to feel that it should have been done. And I say again, Is she serious, and I stand by that.

I understand what you are saying, migrandma.

I thought those posts were unnecessary. i'm not even sure why one would post those opinions, if that's what you want to call them. Why even bother to post. Just move on.

I use my debit card daily and I have never had a cashier turn to slip so it was angled-I always have to turn it after the cashier sets it down for me to sign.

.

:confused3 I never sign my signature when using my Debit Card-just put the 4 # code.

I cant think of any store I sign a paper receipt-except restaurants-all stores have that plastic screen to sign-don't they?

the only place I sign is at the grocery store and they just hand me the ticket, then search for a pen.
What does drive me batty is the card swipers that have the cords on the right. I get that 80+% of people are right handed but they really should make the cords longer for those of us who are lefties. The cords at my local Staples are especially short and are a challenge and a half to sign with.

I use my debit/credit card several times a day. I seriously never have noticed any angle. It doesn't matter anyway since I scrawl my signature. As long as the slip is facing me so that I can read that the charge is correct and I can see where the line is to sign, I am fine.

Now, giving me a retractable pen with the pen not sticking out, ready to write, that is a peeve.

I am a cashier and I usually just hand them the slip and then spend half a minute looking for a doggone pen! The counter is too low and I have to reach over the cash register to lay the slip down.

People can be aggravating, but you have to learn to shrug that off. What I like best about my job is that I really am paid to be nice to people! I LOVE giving Robert (a regular customer) free cheesecake on his 81st birthday and making a fuss over him. He was just sooo doggone pleased about it! I got to surprise a dad, who had been up all night in the ER with a croupy kid, with a 50% discount. Not long ago a few of my co-workers noticed a female customer alone and crying. They brought her free ice cream and sat down and talked with her awhile.

And our bosses are thrilled to hear stuff like this! It's really pretty satisfying.

What does bug me is when a cashier places change (coins) in my hand, and then the paper receipt on top, because then the receipt always falls off of my hand.

Wants paper on the bottom and coins on the top....

When she gives me my change, will she hand me the coins first and then the cash, or will she put the cash in my hand and pile the coins on top so they slide everywhere and I have to try not to drop them?

Wants coins on the bottom and paper on the top....

...I put the last bag in the womans cart and said in a cheerful tone " Have a wonderful day" At which point she spazzed at me for not saying thank you "How about saying thank you.... people now a days are so rude - they cant even give a simple thank you."

What did she want thanks for?????

When I was a cashier I put the paper straight up and down on purpose.

I started out as a lefty, my mother is a lefty, both of my daughters are lefties, my FIL is a lefty, my MIL is a lefty, two of my brothers are lefties, 2 of my brother in laws are lefties...

Shopping at our store.

Sometimes I think people shoulkd be thanking us, we are the only grocery store in town, they'd be mighty hungry without us....LOL

That's mystifying. Sorry you had to deal with that!

Well I'm a cashier, and I happen to work at a place that you actually have to sign a piece of paper if its credit. (Thank you K-Mart.) Honestly I've never worried about how I angled the piece of paper to make it easier for the customer to sign (I do apologize to my customers). I just always set it straight up and down with the pen on the piece of paper on the little table for them to sign it.

I hadn't however, ever thought to give the change first, so lesson learned there.

This is my first time I've ever worked retail (part time job to help pay the bills and such) and it amuses me how rude some people can be. I always enjoy the ones complaining about how long its taking in line and getting so frustrated and demanding to speak to a manager, yet when it's their turn in line, oops where did they put their credit card. Or to price check every item.

Of course my all time favorite was the lady with a cart full of clothes. (K-Mart clearanced their summer clothes to 99 cents, her cart was FULL.) First question, do you want the hangers left on? She answers no, then half way thru, yes I do want my hangers and please put everything you've already sacked back on hangers. Also she got hungry waiting in line so she has started eating a snickers. Sadly when she was almost finished she decided it was stale and didn't want it anymore.

I've only worked this part time job 3 months and oh man, the stories I have.

Last time I was in KMart, a woman in line behind me complained to the cashier that they should let her have a soda for free, because she was in line so long she drank the first one, LOL. I didn't stay to see what happened. BTW, it wasn't me that held things up, it was the 2 people in front of me.

I actually think they should pay cashiers base pay and then pay them for how many items they scan in a day on top of that. I was a cashier for years and it always peeved me that I would check people out fast, while some others drug along. I would end up checking out 2-3 times as many people an hour for the same pay. I think paying more for being more productive would make all the cashiers more productive.

Why not, people are paid for productivity all the time, I know when I processed insurance claims( which will explain to some of you why sometimes they aren't correct) we were paid on productivity to some extent. It was included in our evaluation and if we didn't meet quota we could be let go.

I guess the only problem would be if there was a customer problem that slowed down productivity. I imagine they could call a manager and have that noted though.

I know which cashiers' lines to go to if I need to check out in Walmart. There are 2 or 3 who are very pleasant, but at the same time, they get things done. I know that is their job, but some seem to care about getting things done as quickly and carefully as possible, while others just seem to be staring off into space and stuffing things in whatever bag is handy. Since I've done that job, I know its not the most exciting, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do your best.

There is not one cashier at our Walmart that isn't rude and slow, which is why I refuse to shop there. I live at Publix, I think if I ever had to give up that sore I would be in a bad way. lol. Our cashiers are fast and pretty accurate in what they do. I also agree that what ever job you are doing, it should be done to the best of your ability, which is why I didn't stay at the insurance company very long, processing claims. Just wasn't my gig, to reject claims so that they would count towards productivity.

Ooh, what used to irritate me when I worked at retail, and still gets me when I notice it as a customer-

Those who are rude the entire transaction to a friendly cashier, and walk away with a snobby "you're welcome!!", as if to "correct" them for not thanking them. It is so condescending, and most of the time, the cashier was very polite and efficient, while the customer didn't respond or say one word except for sighs and huffs (and most of the time, elderly)

At our Walmart, I think it's a hiring requirement that you have to be completely incompetent and incredibly, excruciatingly slow. Of course I still shop there because the amount of money I save compared to our other grocery stores makes it worth the suffering.

Every time I leave, I think about how nice it is that a big corporation like Walmart is being so charitable and helping out the people who could never get a job anywhere else.

As far as turning a slip?
I worked a cash register at a pizza place and this thought never occurred to me. Probably because I don't write at an angle. I've always placed my paper straight up and down when writing or signing.

When I was a cashier (at a grocery store and also at Target) all I did was turn the paper so it was facing the right way (so the person was reading it upright, I was looking at it upside-down) ... in all my years of cashiering - 15 at a grocery store and 4 at Target - it never, ever, not even slightly dawned on me to "tilt" the signature line towards one hand or the other.

(and pp who mentioned "how will the cashier give me back my change" I ALWAYS put change-change into your hand first and then bills on top!)
