Cashiers-do you do this?

I told my DH a few days ago, that I have been out of working with the public for too long and I was not sure that I ever could again. Something about being 47 and not taking crap anymore, anyway, you are a better person than me because I would have told her what she could do with those hangers and the snickers. And then would have promptly been fired.

:lmao::lmao: I have no patience for retail any more..I did it for so many years when I was younger I would not last these days. Unfortunately so many customers treat retail workers like crap. NO the customer is NOT always right.

Me too, funny thing is, I worked for American Express for 3 years. 40 hours a week of nothing but customer service and with CC, you know how that can be. We were monitored 4 times a month, you never knew when. I always got 100% on my monitors and had several customer awards. I really don't know how I did it. Probably because I was on the phone, and I could roll my eyes and make faces, while sounding as sweet and concerned as I could be.

Lol I agree... I did food service in college but even that wasn't as bad since we were the only good place to eat on that side of campus we didn't need to be nice to all the students so if someone was clearly wrong the manager would take our side and even did kick some people out (haha now you have to eat at the awful freshman cafeteria or walk all the way across campus in the snow!).

I could never do normal retail.... the closest I did was a small sub shop but even that wasn't too bad, now I have a great job for those of us that can't handle stupidity well. The general public isn't even allowed in the building!!

Oh if anyone wants some good laughs check out notalwaysright.com (short for "The customer is not always right")

Its funny but I warn you kind of sad that people really do some of these things. If you haven't ever worked with the public you probably won't believe most of it.

I will have to check that one out. Sound like good lunchtime reading.

Never thought about what angle the signature receipt was turned. I would think that as long as it was turned facing me, that was good enough.

What does bug me is when a cashier places change (coins) in my hand, and then the paper receipt on top, because then the receipt always falls off of my hand. It's certainly not any big deal at all, just a minor annoyance. All I really care about is that the cashier is efficient, timely, and at least half-way pleasant.

You know what, I have noticed when cashiers slide the slip facing me at an angle, because I always think how courteous it is. On the other hand, I don't ever notice when they don't do it.

Whereas, as one of those fortunate enough to be left-handed, when they angle the slip (inevitably backwards), I notice it because it is a minor inconvenience.

Sorry people are jumping on you OP. It's something you thought about, and something you wanted to ask here. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone has annoyances in their lives, well, except for the perfect people. :goodvibes

But to answer your question, I can't remember the last time I actually had to sign a slip of paper at a check-out. Ours are all electronic, you sign your name in the little box on the machine.

Why are you apologizing? Nobody jumped on the OP. They expressed opinions. You don't need to apologize for people having opinions that are different.

Apparently on the DIS you do. No one can have a difference of opinion without other posters thinking the OP is being attacked. I can't imagine how boring conversations some of these people have if they only surround themselves with people that agree with everything they say.

Any job where you're dealing with the general public, is when you learn to hate the general public. Because for some, nothing is ever good enough, and you're the most horrible person to ever walk the earth for not putting the red carpet out for them.

I've never paid attention to it, and I worked in retail for several years. Now them handing me a pen is a different story... (and one that works too)

I hadn't however, ever thought to give the change first, so lesson learned there.

I had a great manager at my second retail job (well, he had his quirks, but he WAS good at training). He taught me the bit about always counting the change into the person's hand first.

Also, he had me put the money the person was handing me beside my cash, and then count aloud the change I handed back. I wasn't to put the cash away until the person had accepted their change. It seemed awkward at first, but it was really useful for catching scam artists. We'd get people who'd hand us a ten and then claim they'd given us a twenty. We could then just pick up the ten and say (always with a smile!), "No, this is what you gave me. Sorry."

That lady you had was a piece of work! :scared1:

I am a grocery store cashier, I have no idea if I angle the slips or not.

But I do hand coins first then bills. If its someone who is either older ( LOTS of seniors where I live) or someone that has a change purse out or even anyone being given a mitful of change, I will usually hesitate with the bills to give them a moment to put their coins away.

I am a fast cashier, but it dosent take much time. If someone is S L O W about putting their coins away, and there is a line, I will place their bills on the little raised area ( used for signing and right in front of them) and tell them their bills are there. I cant stand there all day holding their cash, but honestly thats about once a month..lol

As for grumpy customers.... Just yesturday I was packing for another cashier. The store was less busy than usual and the sun was shining in the windows ( we've had rain for weeks) I put the last bag in the womans cart and said in a cheerful tone " Have a wonderful day" At which point she spazzed at me for not saying thank you "How about saying thank you.... people now a days are so rude - they cant even give a simple thank you."

LOL All I could think was on the grand scale of rudeness she had me beat by a mile.

I never do I just flip it around straight to them. Never had anyone turn it slanted for me either.:confused3

YOu really are kidding right?

This is a very bizarre thing to even think about let alone post about.

How odd.....

See the quoted posts above yours. They didn't even bother giving their opinions. Opinions are fine. I didn't apologize for people having opinions that are different. There is nothing wrong with a difference of opinion. It's when someone thinks the OP's post is bizarre or odd, or "in the grand scheme of things not important..." that is what I'm talking about, not a difference of opinion. I always feel bad for the OP when people say things like that.

I think the fact that they thought the post is odd is their opinion. The OP herself said "I realize this is terribly unimportant in the grand scheme of things." If anything, they were agreeing with her.

Personally, I don't think it's necessary (or appropriate) for you to apologize for other people's posts. However, I know that is your right so I'm not telling you not to do it, just expressing my opinion.

This has sort of morphed into a pet peeve kind of thing, so here's mine: When I worked in a book store and someone was paying in cash, I would hold my hand out to receive the money and they would just plop it down on the counter (right next to my hand!:confused3). But when they were ready to receive their change back, they had their hand out fully expecting their change given to them directly. A small thing, but multiplied by hundreds, a bit irritating.:headache: Working retail is fun if you look at it as a challenge to get a smile out of the crankiest people...try it, I think you'll enjoy it!!:rotfl:

I have honestly never paid attention to see if any cashier has ever done this for me.

Yep I see these as opinions, the opinion that working with the general public is crazy, because of stupid things like this, so I answered, Are you kidding me? That pretty much boils down to my opinion on what the John Q Public has to worry about. They are nuts and crazy, and way too demanding.

I've never worked as a cashier, but a zillion years ago, I used to waitress. I had read somewhere that when at a restaurant, no matter where the waitress puts the plate the guest will always readjust it, or turn it or move it closer or whatever. After i read that I started to watch people and sure enough, people always move it.
I bet it's the same with the slip - no matter where the cashier places it, the customer is always going to adjust it.
I don't know if a customer has ever slanted it for me, as I'm left handed and would have moved it anyway.
