OK, I am FAR from an extreme couponer! I only use coupons for natural and organic products. Whole Foods has coupons and they also except manufacturers coupons. So today I had about 10 coupons worth about $14 or so. I spent $123 when it was all said and done. Well you would have thought I had 500 coupons! The lady took a good 10 minutes to deal with the coupons, questioning me what items I bought. She could have looked on her screen and saw what I bought! If Whole Foods is going to have coupons they should train their employees on how to deal with them. It was very frustrating because the lady behind me was clearly annoyed. Last week I used some coupons there and the people in line thought it was cool, and so did the cashier. I guess they don't see many coupons there.

Thanks for listening.

That's too bad. What did the manager say when you approached him/her to mention the training deficit regarding coupons?

I've quit using coupons in grocery stores for this reason. Ever since the Extreme Couponing show cashiers act so taken aback if you hand them a few coupons. I got tired of them making such a big deal out of it. :sad2: I will say I think the 'fad' is running its course. I don't see near as many binder toting shoppers at Target and Walmart as I did a few months back.

I would look at your receipt and call the manager with the information of the cashier. I would recommend they review the survellence if available and ask him to review her body language and attitude for you. I would explain that you are a loyal customer who is just trying to make ends met. Coupons allows you to shop at his store but you have to save where you can.

See what his response is. I am a big believer in customer service. If a person is great I tip well or let the manager know. If the customer service is bad I let the manager know as well.

I have never had a cashier act as if I was causing a problem when using coupons. :confused3 If I ever do run into one, you can bet I will take their name and then have a chat with a manager. It is probably as much a training issue in general as it is a coupon issue. If they were not giving you attitude for using coupons, they would probably have a problem with how you put your merchandise up on the belt.

I will let it go this time but if it happens again I am going to talk to a manager. This is the second time something like this happened. Once I only had like 2 coupons and the cashier made me dig through my bags to find the items to prove I got those specific products! Then the next time I went I asked the cashier if she wanted the coupons placed on the items before they are scanned to avoid any issues and she said no, I shouldn't have to do that and she could take the coupons at the end no problem. she said the other cashier must have been new. I usually only have like 1-4 coupons. The last coupon times I have had about 10. Like I said last week the cashier thought it was cool and today a different cashier was annoyed and took forever to figure them out, and kept saying how she couldn't remember what items I bought. Craziness!

I would call the store, I have never had a problem with coupons at Whole Foods. I also use a lot of coupons at CVS, once at CVS the cashier saw I was buying Bounty with coupons and told me that they had some Bounty on clearance and i could use my coupons on those and save even more. Who cares if they were halloween"they were like 10 cents a roll" :worship:

Sorry that happened to you OP.

The store must not have a really good register system that could "know" if you bought that item or not and take it off automatically instead of going through a bag.

I would have honestly said"you know the screen can be your guide" with a smile on my face.

I haven't had any cashiers in my local grocery store give me a hard time, and if they did , I would let THEM know that their job is to provide customer service and if they can't handle it then have a manager come over and do it for them. I'm mouthy when I need to be,lol.

I do agree with other posters of letting the manager know. This cashier may have just been lazy and didn't want to be bothered, but even with the Extreme Coupon craze, there is no way that would deter me from using coupons unless someone else wants to pay my grocery bill for me,lol.

When I was newly married and in my early 20's I remember I was checking out on line at Shoprite. The cashier, an older gentlemen, asked me for my coupons. I told him I didn't have any. He actually scolded me and told me I should be more careful with my money. I have to say, I started to and still use coupons. I would actually seek out that cashier and try to impress him with my coupons each week. :)

OP...that's a shame! I can't believe the cashier would act this way:confused3. I love to coupon and every few months, I use quite a few stocking up on necessities like tissue, soap, dog food etc. If a cashier would act this way towards me, I'd ignore her. Not a big enough deal to get upset about.

I hear you!

I have had a few weird experiences at Whole Foods...

Not coupon related but...

An odd exchange with a cashier as we were chit chatting during check out--she launched into a long screed about some weather based doomsday theory. It was kind of unsettling.

A bakery mishap where they tried to sell me the wrong loaf of bread, and when I pointed out the error, they wanted to raise the price of the loaf that I did want because they had already printed the ticket...

A deli server that licked that back of his hand...

A customer doing something personal with the fruit and when I asked the clerk what the heck was going on--I was told not to sweat it--I should be washing fresh fruit before consuming it... well yeah, but I still don't want my fruit to be rubbed on someone's body before purchasing it!!

And this was at three different locations!

I haven't been back in a while---

Their staff training is a bit weak!!

CVS must give their staff outstanding training! This morning, I popped into CVS to purchase a few items. The woman ahead of me on the line had a bunch of items and coupons. The cashier was very friendly and helpful and happy that the woman was using coupons. Well, at the end after she paid, the CVS coupons started printing with the receipt --- amazing!! The customer got $28 in coupons and had just spent $30 so she, in essence, got her cartful of stuff for only $2. Not only was I excited about it, but the cashier was ecstatic! She was so happy for her customer's good fortune!

Now, THAT is customer service!!!!

I had the same thing happen to me at my local Pick n Save. I have never been so embarassed in my life! The cashier was arguing with me over a Weight Watchers coupon. I purchased a total of 12 meals and should have been able to use two coupons but they were accusing me of double couponing. They lost me as a customer over a dumb $1.00 coupon. There was no manager available but I did write a letter to the company. I now drive out of my way to go to the competition. I use about $10-15 in coupons in each transaction and have no problems at this other store.

Op, I am sorry that you felt that your cashier was being rude to you and causing you embarrassement in front of other customers. I would recommend that you have her call a manager the minute it became a long draw out process. As you stated, she could have been new, need more training or just wanted everything to be correct. But, regardless, holding up the customer to do so is INCORRECT.

FWIW, In the last few months, even manufacturer coupons are having difficulty scanning at the register. They have changed the bar coding and for some reason, even with updates from HQ, we are having an issue with them scanning. It will show a message to the cashier that the item was not found. Meaning, the coupon will not scan because it can not find the item it should be assoicated with. It could be that this was happening to her if your coupons were manufacturer coupons. Our policy is to not hold up the customer but going through their bags but if it is a product we sell have the customer service rep/office person come to the register and override the coupons. Those changes in coupons are causing great issue at stores but causing a great less problems in fraudulent couponing.

I would have certainly had her call a manager instead of causing you delay. If the coupons were not scanning for some reason, a key from a manager or customer service rep would have sped up the process a lot!

I use coupons often. When I had a cashier get a bit of an attitude with me for it, I complained via their website.

The manager of the store invited me in for a morning cup of coffee and asked me to bring my receipt. It was a great experience. He gave my receipt to someone and we got a cup of coffee from the in store Starbucks. We walked through the store and he showed me some of the store's features that he checks on his periodic walkthroughs during the day.

When we returned to his office, he opened up a video of my transaction at the register on his computer. We watched it together. I could see from his expression he wasn't happy. The quality of the video was EXCELLENT. I think if I had tried I could have read the coupons on the video.

In the video she was, as I remembered rude. She rolled her eyes, she got more unhappy when a coupon would scan. Her comments weren't too bad but she did have attitude. The real coup de grace happened after I left. On the video she says something to the bag boy. The manager played it back and then he quickly apologized. He was M-A-D.

Her comment? Her comment questioned my sexual orientation because I used coupons. I guess it is a good thing that she didn't see that I drove a Prius. The manager gave me a $10 off $30 store coupon and promised me that he'd deal with the situation. I haven't seen that cashier in the store since and every time I see the manager he asks me if I saw the coupon on this or that. Can't guys use coupons in this day and age?

I only shop at that store once a week but I always have 10-15 coupons to use. It just makes sense.

I couponed before I had kids. Then it got too time consuming. Then I moved to a small town with only 2 stores and no coupons. I moved back to the city where I found a perfect store that that checked all the others stores prices but beat them!!

I had to move and I decided to try couponing again. When did coupons become so stupidly small??? Not even my college age kid can read these things, and you can't even make out the pictures!!!??????? And the fine print is really a blur! You can't find the dates of useage?

So, I gave up again!! Only good news is my favorite store is coming to town! The one that checks all the prices, and beats them!!!!!! I just have to wait for them to finish building the store...popcorn::

Sounds like a great Store Manager to handle your situation! The only thing is, not everyone is allowed to see video. It is a violation of privacy laws. Even the police are not allowed to see the tape unless a crime has been committed. I am not sure if this federal or state laws, but here in NC we are unable to allow customers to view tapes.

Ok, going to get a little off topic here. I see this all the time about CVS, but can someone please explain to me how if I spend $30.00 and I get $28.00 in coupons back, I have, "in essence" spent $28.00. Because frankly half the time, those coupons are for things that I don't and won't use. So really I did spend more than $2.00, Not all coupons are created equal. I don't like to spend more money just to get more coupon for a later date, especially when I may not use those coupons. FWIW, I have never gotten out of CVS cheaper regardless of coupons. I go elsewhere, they are overprices and never have what I need.

of good. ( Just as an example, not really a situation)

I would say about 95% of the CVS coupons I get at the register are usable to me. They know what your shopping history is from your card and you get coupons for items you typically purchase or similar items. Same goes for the "catalinas" at the grocery store --- always for something I usually purchase anyway.

I guess you have better luck than I do. I get stuff that is completely useless to me.
