cashier annoyed with me using coupons!

You should definitely ask to speak to the Manager next time. Like some pp's, I usually use the same grocery store, and pretty much know which cashiers are coupon-friendly, and which like to give you a hassle. I also know the front end manager from a few "issues" and she knows that I know the store policy and that I'm not trying to scam anyone.

The ones who are coupon-friendly tend to be the ones who are friendly in general, the others don't seem to enjoy/take pride in their work. If I do end up with a less than friendly cashier, I try to be very friendly, and sometimes that helps. Honestly, I get that they might not want to be there, but don't take that out on me.

I admit I'm a bit addicted to couponing. I love saving money. I've been getting 49 mpg in my Prius... Trying real hard to get that average over 50. I've got a gas-guzzling Navigator at the house if I need to impress a young lady.

I'd be more impressed with the Prius, but I'm a couponing addict as well! :lovestruc

I am a cashier and it is not my job to know what I am scanning through my register. It is my job to scan the items as quickly as possible. We are timed and we have to scan a minimum number of items per minute or we can get written up. If we took the time to look over every item that every person purchased it would add minutes on to each transaction. I am sure that the customers would not appreciate having to wait in line longer while we examine their groceries.

The computer sometimes will not allow a coupon to go through, it is the cashier's responsibility to make sure the item was actually purchased. If the coupon is expired or the item was not purchased we do not receive the money from the manufacturer. When I ask to see an item that the customer purchased it is not because I am trying to make things difficult, I am just trying to do my job.

You do realize the statements in red kind of contradict each other, right? ;)

To be fair, I certainly wouldn't take a snotty attitude with a courteous cashier who's just trying to do his/her job. The response you quoted from me however *is* pretty much exactly how I would have responded to the particular cashier who was the inspiration for this thread :)

I've quit using coupons in grocery stores for this reason. Ever since the Extreme Couponing show cashiers act so taken aback if you hand them a few coupons.

I have to admit I don't understand this at all. It's a cashiers job to take coupons. If she doesn't like it that's not my problem. No way I would stop using them because of someone elses attitude.

A few weeks ago I was yelled at when I tried to use coupons. No exaggeration. The cashier was about 80 and accused me of not cutting out the whole coupon because there was only one barcode. I pointed out the dotted line. Then she said it was for too much off. The manager came over to help but I never got an apology.

Now when I have a difficult cashier I simply say "let me figure out my coupons, please void the whole transaction." I then take everything over to a different cashier and check out with no problems. Usually younger ones are easier. I have done this twice successfully.

I also have been giving bad survey points when I get a receipt that has a survey opportunity on it, if I have had problems. I even emailed corporate offices once when they would not let me exchange cat food for a different variety because I had used a coupon, and the store manager contacted me by phone to apologize and admitted he had not trained all his employees. His excuse was there were too many employees!

I choose the line I get in based on who the cashier is and my previous experience with them, particularly if I have coupons. The ones I use regularly know that I have coupons and that I have the items to correspond with them.

My wife has a couple cashiers who will wave her over into their lane because they like to see how much she saves :rotfl:

When I was newly married and in my early 20's I remember I was checking out on line at Shoprite. The cashier, an older gentlemen, asked me for my coupons. I told him I didn't have any. He actually scolded me and told me I should be more careful with my money. I have to say, I started to and still use coupons. I would actually seek out that cashier and try to impress him with my coupons each week. :)

:D this made me smile!!! :)

I use coupons often. When I had a cashier get a bit of an attitude with me for it, I complained via their website.

The manager of the store invited me in for a morning cup of coffee and asked me to bring my receipt. It was a great experience. He gave my receipt to someone and we got a cup of coffee from the in store Starbucks. We walked through the store and he showed me some of the store's features that he checks on his periodic walkthroughs during the day.

When we returned to his office, he opened up a video of my transaction at the register on his computer. We watched it together. I could see from his expression he wasn't happy. The quality of the video was EXCELLENT. I think if I had tried I could have read the coupons on the video.

In the video she was, as I remembered rude. She rolled her eyes, she got more unhappy when a coupon would scan. Her comments weren't too bad but she did have attitude. The real coup de grace happened after I left. On the video she says something to the bag boy. The manager played it back and then he quickly apologized. He was M-A-D.

Her comment? Her comment questioned my sexual orientation because I used coupons. I guess it is a good thing that she didn't see that I drove a Prius. The manager gave me a $10 off $30 store coupon and promised me that he'd deal with the situation. I haven't seen that cashier in the store since and every time I see the manager he asks me if I saw the coupon on this or that. Can't guys use coupons in this day and age?

I only shop at that store once a week but I always have 10-15 coupons to use. It just makes sense.

Why do I think that there are now several single Budget Board ladies who are trying to figure out where you live and how to "bump" into you while shopping? :rotfl:

Great manager!

Great manager!

You would be surprised how many women I've met while couponing. It is one of the extra side benefits of saving money.
