ok maybe i watch too many law shows - ncsi csi crminal minds etc but they never talk about how long smells last when a body is found in a car.
anyone know? is this something that would have vanished after a week or so or is the smell of death sooooooo strong it last weeks/months?
Once upon a time my mom owned a crappy Mercedes. She wanted a luxury car and bought this clunker.
One day--we went to some picnic at her Command....and she brought Egg Salad or Potato Salad--some "salad" made with Mayo.
And then---She forgot about it. I think I am gagging recalling this story!
Well, when she finally removed rotten nasty salad--the smell lingered for DAYS.

It was horrendous.
It did fade, but it never really went away. I think that was when she finally convinced herself to ditch the car. (ETA: Trade it in for some other vehicle that also did not run well, but smelled a whole heck of a lot better!)
So while I cannot attest to how long the smell in question would last. When smells are left in a confined space with permeable/asborbing materials such as the trunk liner and car upholestery--it would take a lot to remove the smell.
We have kitties and if they have an accident as one cat of mine had on a recliner when he had infections--the smell cannot be removed just from surface washing. It lingers and stays. That is why we used Nature's Miracle--the enzymes "eat" whatever causes the odor.
So I have no doubt that IF Caylee was in that car after her passing,

, that in the hot summer, if a smell formed and grew to the point of other people noticing, that it wasn't going to just go away when whatever happened to her occurred.
(That is difficult to type--we are talking about a baby girl.
