Casey Anthony Civil Trials Discussion

Jeff Ashton has been in the news here a lot lately. Unfortunately, he's had some unpleasant issues to deal with. He went to court to defend his son on a DUI charge. He lost the case. His son was sentenced with the same sentence he would have received had he plead no contest.

The next week, Jeff was back in court defending his daughter on a charge of driving on a suspended license.

This wouldn't seem like a big deal if it were not for the fact that he is running for public office. Of course, the media has been all over it.

Here's hoping that Jeff's family cuts him some slack and starts behaving themselves.

Thanks for the update! It will be interesting to see if Cheney Mason is able to secure any type of deal for Casey. While I can't stand Mason or Baez, out of the two it would seem that Baez could bring the charm a lot better than Mason. If Baez couldn't sweet talk a deal, I'm hopeful that CM is even less successful.

Great picture, Kurby!

I've seen Jeff Ashton's family woes in the news lately. Not that there is ever a good time for your kids to get into trouble but they couldn't have picked a worse time in terms of his career. I hope it all works out for him. Sounds like both of these grown kids could use a good, swift kick in the butt.

Guilty until proven innocent? ;) It was my understanding that the outcome in his daughter's case hasn't been determined yet.

It's been in the national news about Jeff Ashton and his kids. I don't know what his defense was for his son, what proof there was or anything...not following Jeff Ashton that closely. As for his daughter, he talked about it on InSession yesterday, and I didn't take notes, but it sounded like there was a good explanation...as most defense attorneys make things sound. OR...he could be right on target. Maybe the public needs to cut him some slack and not judge him on what one of his kids did, and what another might have done in a case still pending.

In the case of his son, they showed dashcam video of the police stop. He was pretty obviously impared. I have no idea what is going on with the daughter's case.

I agree that, in principle, people should not judge. But, that isn't reality. When you run for public office, the media is going to jump on everything. Some will just assume that where there is smoke, there's fire. It's a shame. I wouldn't wish these problems on any parent. I hope that things settle down for him soon.

Un.blankin'.believable. Jeff Ashston said on his FB page "I see that the Bar cleared Baez on the grievance matters. Interesting that they never spoke to me about them....."

Jose Baez cleared of complaints to Florida Bar

The Florida Bar says that former Casey Anthony lead attorney Jose Baez has been cleared of all complaints filed against him in the case.

The grievance committee found no probable cause and voted 7-0 to dismiss all complaints.

Concerning the investigation, the Florida Bar issued the following statement:
The Florida Bar has concluded its investigation of two cases involving attorney Jose Baez and after a thorough investigation by a grievance committee composed of lawyers and non-lawyers, and with their unanimous vote, the cases have been closed without discipline.

However, in one case the grievance committee also issued a letter of advice indicating that while Mr. Baez’s conduct did not warrant formal discipline, the committee believed his conduct was not consistent with the high standards of the legal profession.

The Florida Bar is responsible for the review of every incident in which it appears that a member of the Bar may not have complied with the professional responsibilities set forth by the Florida Supreme Court in The Rules Regulating The Florida Bar. In these two cases, news reports brought these matters to the Bar's attention.
The letter of advice contained the committee's concerns regarding instances of failure to comply with discovery orders, which they believe was unintentional, but said every attorney has an obligation to ensure compliance to court orders. Read the full letter by clicking the links in the More Info box.

Baez said in a statement:
“Much has been made about the claims filed against me. I am glad to see the grievance committee was fair and thorough in their decision.”

as for dippy - i thought he bailed months ago when her book deal tanked and he knew he wasn't going to profit from her

he's a tool and needs to go far far away

Oh Kurby, time sure flew by. You will have a story to tell her one day. She is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

You guys are lucky I'm so committed (or stupid!) to this thread, cuz it took forever to load! I was ready to throw my laptop across the room. Anyway...it sounds like this will be televised. Here we go again! Not sure I can watch her be acquitted again. Although it's a jury trial...where are they going to get this jury? And do they not have some fears after the first trial? So many unanswered questions! ;)

Casey Anthony: Sequel could look familiar; will she?

When the defamation suit against Casey Anthony goes to trial, it could remind viewers of her murder trial. WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing explained how the sequel will echo the original, starting with the backdrop.

“It’s going be right up there in the 23rd-floor courtroom where she was acquitted of killing her daughter Caylee,” Kealing said today, standing outside the Orange County Courthouse. “Reporters who covered the first trial will be assigned the exact same seat.”

This time around, however, the jury will not be sequestered. Zenaida Gonzalez says her life was ruined when Anthony linked her to Caylee’s disappearance.

The civil trial could begin April 10, although her defense team is seeking a 60-day delay.

Charles Greene, Anthony’s attorney, told Kealing that Anthony could, if ordered to do so, be in court every day during a trial estimated to run two weeks.

Anthony’s presence would guarantee heavy media coverage. How does she look these days? She has shown different hairstyles in videos that hit the web.

Kealing noted that the civil-trial news fell on the eighth-month anniversary of Anthony’s acquittal in the murder trial.

In other Anthony news, Anthony’s latest probation report is out. “She told the probation officer she still has no job and remains in therapy,”

WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Vanessa Welch said. “She reported in last Thursday around 7 p.m.”

Anthony is serving a year’s probation somewhere in the state for check fraud.

Please, please, please, do not let me get a jury summons for this trial! Maybe, being a member of this thread would be enough to get me off.

It would be just my luck to get a summons for this. :rotfl:

I for one appreciate your dedication to this thread Mary Ann. It's my go to source for info. I would imagine that we will kicking it into high gear again once the next trial starts.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I'm throwing my TV out the window. I refuse to get sucked in. I refuse to participate. I will be strong.

Oh, who am I kidding. See ya April 10th!

(if the Dis doesn't speed up, the trial might be over before we can even comment on it)
