Casey Anthony Civil Trials Discussion

I'm not sure I understand this regarding Casey repaying the costs for the investigation.

Eaton said Perry has discretion to decide what costs of the investigation should be shifted to Anthony, but since she was acquitted of the most serious crimes, expenses for that part of the investigation cannot be included.

"She should not be taxed for the crimes for which she was found not guilty. There's going to have to be a dividing line somewhere," Eaton said.

I was under the impression that the whole reason they are going after her is because they spent a boatload of money investigating a crime that apparently never took place. Yet, this judge is saying that they can't go after her for the crimes she was found not guilty of. :confused3 What are they going after then? Only the 4 counts of lying? Are the $80,000+ that they are referring to in the article based only on the lying charges or is that what those departments spent altogether and they are going to make Judge Perry ascertain what charges relate to the the lying versus the murder charges?

From Twitter:

HarveyLevinTMZ by TMZ we reported the bidding for Casey Anthony is >$1.5 mil. they think TMZ bid on her. We did NOT, would NOT and will NOT. I think NBC got her

Okay. But she was convicted of the lies that her daughter was missing and Zenaida took her. So the costs of searching for a missing child, and investigating a person that didn't exist could still be charged to her. I'm guessing that's pretty substantial.

Regarding the bidding war for Casey's interview:
I believe Harvey. Jim Lichtenstein keeps twittering that NBC won't pay. Hmmm....

Back from WDW..had a great time, even though it was so hot I was drenched all the time. I spent 1 week with hair pulled back and no makeup cause it just wasn't worth the bother of doing since within 10 minutes of being outside it just melted off.

Can I tell you that I was excited when I turned on the TV and saw the "real" channels that televised everything and not just the feeds? Yeah, doesn't take much with me. LOL.

That Casey mask is pretty much right on with her look. Got her mouth down perfectly.

Looks like Casey is shooting for $1.5 million.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/cutline...1-5-million-interview-networks-161219186.html

While I hope she doesn't get it, am I the only one that doesn't think she is going to get rich from this deal? My biggest fear once she was found not guilty was that she would cash in on this. Thankfully, she seems to be hated enough that the deals aren't pouring in. If this is the best she can do, she will have to pay taxes on it, then Jose will take at least half, then she will have to pay off her back taxes, court fees for all of her upcoming lawsuits, and possibly make payouts because of those lawsuits. Hopefully, that won't leave enough for her to live happily ever after.

And whatever money she is left with will have to pay or a life of seclusion (gated homes, limos, bodyguards, etc) which is very expensive. I'm like you, i don't think she will have a pot to pee in when all is said and done. It's not like she can go out and get a career to make a living.

If there is any money left. I guess people are boycotting the resturant that the attorneys partyed in after winning. They were posting on there FB they were trying to explain they have no control over who comes in.

YES but that is not what happened they did not just come in. They had the whole restaurant, there were not other customers allowed in during the time the defense was there and that they DO have control over.

I can pretty much assure you that Casey will reap benefits from the money and not be subject to paying lawsuits, etc. She will incorporate. They will pay the corporation. The corporation will pay her in a "salary". The corp will protect the money from lawsuits and they will only be able to get, maybe, from her salary. If her lawyers are worth a dime, she might even have that money in a foreign bank.. We will see how it pans out.

That Casey mask is truly scary!

Not sure whether this has been posted yet. It is very long but about the best article I've seen so far on the case.

http://www.law.com/jsp/nlj/PubArtic...the_Casey_Anthony_trial&slreturn=1&hbxlogin=1

Just one paragraph (bolding mine):

"The Anthony trial was an intricate circumstantial evidence case, but it shouldn't have flummoxed a jury of even borderline intelligence. Why did these jurors so lack the courage of their convictions (literally) that they were not willing to fight for their convictions for even one full calendar day? It seems to me that the jurors collectively certainly did not carefully evaluate the evidence in the manner that this circumstantial evidence required — when such careful examination could have resulted in a guilty verdict. None of the reported comments of the several jurors who have communicated, in one form or another, has said anything that inspires confidence that they knew what they were talking about, understood the difference between inferences that could be drawn from evidence as opposed to mere speculation or properly understood what the prosecution was required to prove."

No kidding! I totally agree with the experienced attorney and law professor who wrote this article.

Wow what a great article, written by someone who actually practices and teaches law. I must say that I find irony in reference to the film Devil's Advocate( I am finding a lot of irony related to this case) If you have not seen that movie (as I am sure most of us have) watch it. There is an underlying creepiness to this trial and Baez that parallels the movie. If it made today, people who say that it was "ripped from the headlines". While Baez is said to be in NY being romanced by the media, the character in DA was in NY being romanced by a high level law firm. Seriously, watch the movie if you hve not seen it.

Off the top of my head here are some of the parallels

Begins in Fla
Young attorney gets people off he knows are guilty of heinous crimes
Wins when clients are glaringly guilty
Unknown lawyer thrown to prominence
Brought up by a single mother who he adores
Sells his soul to the devil!
Even the scene in the restaurant after the trial was eerily similar.

Well thanks for peeing in my Cheerios this morning! ;) I never thought of that, though. Ugh! What happened with OJ? Isn't he still paying money because of the civil suit? Was he able to secure his money?

Just noticed that Drew Petersen might walk on another thread.
I think he and Casey should get together.

The way things are going perhaps we all should start a dating service for murderers who walk so they can find each other. What could we call it?

Not feeling to creative today all I can come up with is

MDATE

anyone else?

Sorry :( LOL... You know, I think that this is the reason the the Goldman's had such a tough time collecting from OJ.. I need to read up on that... But I am almost sure OJ did the same kind of thing or his money was already set up that way. I did find this,,

Anything involving the search for a live child, I suppose. Any and all investigations that sent them on a wild goose chase.

Clearly, and I agree, she should not be charged for anything trying to convict her of murder. That's silly. She should not get a bill for the autopsy, for example. That is not how our justice system works.

But just like the Runaway Bride had to pay restitution (for expenses) for a kidnapping that did not take place, so should CA pay for the lengthy searches for kidnappers and a live child did not exist.

The Runaway Bride is an excellent example of someone having to pay towards the expenses incurred investigating what later turned out to be a lie.

As far as I'm concerned, NBC can keep her too ... Casey, her family, her lawyers and NBC (if it's true about them) all just disgust me  ...

TMZ also shared this little snippet on their website about Casey ...

I'm no legal scholar, but from what I understand, forming a corporation will make it a little tougher to collect damages from Casey, but won't keep someone from getting it eventually. For example, let's say NBC pays her a million dollars, Casey forms an corporation and pays herself an annual salary of 100,000. If someone wins a lawsuit against her, I think they would get a large portion of her salary from the corporation until it is paid off, instead of getting a large lump sum initially. The damages would still be paid out, it would just take longer.

Let's also not forget that the attorneys working for Casey to help defend her from all these lawsuits are going to be charging her top dollar to do it, so she will be spending a fortune on attorneys regardless.

And I don't think she has a high school diploma, which would make it difficult for just about anyone to have a career.

I agree. I think at some point in time, she will probably be left out in the cold, unless she can find someone just like her, who is fortunate enough to have an income. At some point, her boyfriend Jose won't be willing to keep her (if that's who's keeping her for now). When it reaches a point where she has no more monetary value to him, he'll be off.

soooooooo yesterday was July 27th - Nicoles due date.

I agree with you, but there are some who believe that investigation cost is built into the system (cost of investigating, whether based on true or false statements made by Casey).

OKAY just saw on the news that the Anthony's are selling Casey's car starting price is 5000.00. Seriously? Really? I had put these people on the moral ladder right above call girls and their bosses(do not want to use the correct words but you all know them) but now they have actually sunk below and possibly reached the level of hit men.

If it were me, and I knew my relative had been stashed in that car in such a disgusting manner I would have the car destroyed .....there has to be a huge amount of negative energy attached to that vehicle but more than that why would you want to think of someone driving around, putting groceries etc in a car where a baby had been dumped. I know that the people who want to buy it are crazy but I excuse them just because they are crazy and to me it is wORSE that Caylee's grandparents would benefit from her one of for lack of a better term final resting place.

They are disgusting. I am starting to think RC was too good for George. Don't tell me, they will donate the money to the foundation the GAC foundation!
