Cases rising or dropping by you?

Orange County CA back in the Purple (most restrictive) Tier. No indoor dining, bars closed, etc. :sad2:
I just read an article about a bunch of lawmakers from California (both parties) all hanging out in Maui at a HUGE conference in a fancy resort to discuss "Coronavirus safety" for their constituents.... sorry but that just about did me in this morning..... :headache: :headache: :headache: (does that cross the no discuss line here? I'm not sure) it was a Beat of Hawaii article....anywayyyyyy.....

Our governor told us last night in a special Sunday night address that we're on the path for 1,000 deaths a week here in Michigan after Thanksgiving. Thus we are in what she is calling a "pause" starting Wednesday for three weeks. Sounds friendlier than a lock down. :)
Wanna take bets on whether she asks everyone to pause until the vaccine is ready?

The real question is going to be one of enforcement. Honestly, I'm not sure lockdowns are justified at this point... not because the virus isn't spreading, but because the vast majority of spread is being traced to private events that won't be impacted by any shutdown order for lack of enforcement resources/protocols. So why shutter businesses where the virus isn't being transmitted because people are hosting parties and spreading it in their own homes? It is going to create an immense amount of financial pain, but I don't think it is going to do much to slow the spread. The same people who had Halloween parties are going to have Thanksgiving dinners and football watch parties and Christmas gatherings, and no one is going to be monitoring what goes on in private homes to stop them.

Yes, I suppose this is true. But I see lack of enforcement on the restaurant front too....only supposed to be 25% indoor in NJ, and that's definitely being ignored on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in my area.

Our governor announced yesterday limits for only 10 people indoors, but I'm sure many will ignore that as well with the holiday coming up. It's happening in my own extended family....with my cousin, who is having 14 adults and 7 kids for dinner....including my aunt and her husband who both have preexisting conditions. That branch of the family is "over it." I just imagine how awful they will all feel if someone ends up in the hospital, or even worse, dying.

Our governor has made a point to really go after the "hockey community"....which I didn't really know was a thing. But apparently there has been documented spread among those families and players. So they banned inter-state games. But yesterday he went after them again, because the parents aren't cooperating with contract tracers. Seems like he's on the verge of stopping that one thing. The next town over abruptly went to virtual learning and canceled all fall sports for the year. That was a heartbreaker for some of those kids as several of the teams were heading into state championship playoffs. But again...there's been a lot of spread around high school sports, not necessarily due to practice and games, but with after parties...etc.

I think hospitalizations are the key now. Our daily case numbers are now higher than our peak in the spring, but testing was so limited that we were clearly missing thousands of cases. Our hospitals were full back then, now they're at about 1/3 of where we were then. So I guess it'll be a matter of seeing if they really begin to take off, and at that point I'd expect my state to end indoor dining and close the bars down again.

They should all be fired.

Just wait till we see how many high ranking rule makers have big family Thanksgivings.

Maybe it's too soon to speak and I hope I dont jinx it, but it seems possibly the growth in many EU countries have stagnated and a tad lower than last week.. France and Germany for example. Our newer restrictions got extended... Dining/ funs activities stopped... But schools still in session. .. Austria seems to have a real big problem.. Stay at home orders start today.. Can only leave the home to work, Doctor appts, shoppings and outdoor sports ( jogging, walking) and schools closed.. but their numbers were 500 + to /100,000 and hospitals full.. They needed drastic measures.

I have quite a few nurses in my family and they work at the major teaching hospitals in Boston. One thing they have all said is nursing staffing is actually going to be a bigger issue now vs the spring. Most elective surgeries and other care was paused, leaving hospitals with a bigger pool of staff to redeploy. PPE gear was the bigger issue.

That's not the case right now and probably won't be at many hospitals so staffing could be spread very thin, especially at the smaller affiliates.

We plan to follow the advisory here in Chicago...but I will say I find this kind of funny.

Do as I say, not as I do.

https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/loc...about-his-familys-thanksgiving-plans/2373329/

I like the way he said in that article that he wasn't aware of the mayor's shut down advisories because he was so busy. I would assume he would be on top of what the mayor of a big city in his state was doing.........as his job.

Not to get political but when people read that, you get the skeptics and then you increase the problems of protecting people from the Virus. :(

I don't get skeptical of how bad the virus is, I just shake my head.

"More than half a dozen California lawmakers are among the 50 people attending a policy conference..."

Eyebrow raising news. I'll give it one eyebrow anyway. 🧐

Sorry for my poorly laid out post above. I was using a tablet and it didn't work too well. I am not sure if any health care workers in other states are experiencing or concerned about the same issue as below. We feel fortunate to be in an area with so many large medical centers but that is certainly not the case for many people and even in MA in areas outside of Greater Boston.

Most of the districts have closed in the metro area of Denver. My district went remote for 2 weeks and was going to go back on Monday, Nov. 16. However, last Wednesday they did a testing site just for students and staff. Only 400 people came to get tested. Of those 400 people, they found 14 students and 12 staff members were positive.

One thing our district has found is that parents are not getting their children tested. For example, a cohort at the high school had to quarantine in September because 1 student was positive. The student was in the same classes/cohort with the older brother of one of my students. In one of their classes about half of the class came down with symptoms but their parents did not have them tested because they didn't see the point. My student's brother did test positive and he knows that the only place he could have gotten it was at school because he does not have contact with any of the other students outside of school.

From the same high school, two of my former students lives with their great grand parents who are 81 and 85. Because of the ages of the grandparents the girls only go to school and then come home. Both girls began experiencing the lose of smell and taste on the same day about two weeks ago. Granny is now in the hospital in ICU and Papa really should be as well.

My youngest niece is a first year third grade teacher and on a hybrid system. 1 of her students tested positive last week and then another one tested positive a few days later.

So while spread in school appears to be low and it is probably lower than a workplace or social gatherings, I don't feel we have accurate data because parents aren't getting their children tested.

This is in the back of my mind as well. While schools haven’t had huge pockets of kids out with it, I think there’s pretty widespread asymptomatic or mild spread going on undetected, and there’s been a million cases in kids (accelerating rapidly when school went back). While not problematic (relatively) for the kids, it’s the spread to families that get caught as they have worse outcomes.

I feel like keeping elementary schools open is more an acknowledgment that people can’t work while their young kids aren’t in school and so it’s essential in the same way that grocery stores need to stay open no matter what so people can eat. It sounds a lot like the ”masks aren’t needed” in the beginning which was more about the PPE shortage. At the time I kept thinking of course masks are important or the hospitals wouldn’t need them so badly.

I am not sure what this curfew is going to do. Most places are closed by 10pm and don't open until well after 5am. I know he is trying to lower the numbers and probably throwing everything at the wall to see what works instead of a shut down. I do have to say the mask wearing is back up in my area. It was really bad the week before the new mandate.

All I can think of is that this it targeted towards bars. And with college students coming home for winter breaks, he's probably trying to discourage late nights at bars, without completed shutting down restaurants. Not sure if it will have much overall effect, however?

This is essentially what it is. It isn't that the virus stops infecting people at 10 and all the other nonsense people spew about the curfews, it is about shortening the window. Personally I think he should have just closed them or gone with a much earlier curfew like 8 but we will see if it has an impact. I really hope it does.
