Cars in Fort Wilderness

Dumb question, I know, but are you permitted to drive your car to the parks, if you don't want to take the busses. I understand you can't drive around the grounds in a car, but we wanted to make sure we could drive back and forth to parks everyday from our cabin. We would love to take the bus, but with little kids and strollers, driving a car is so much easier. Thanks Janice

Absolutely - you can drive your own car from the Fort to any other part of WDW (and I agree it's much easier with strollers!!).

You can't drive around FW in your car??? Are there any exceptions ever made? Like arrival and departure day for example? Or grocery shopping? I just can't imagine having to haul the luggage or a week or two of groceries by foot to some parking lot who knows how far away or having to take the internal shuttle I've heard so much about. Do you pretty much have to rent a golf cart to stay at FW?

No no no!! Of course you can drive to and from your site!! I've also read that you can drive to the trading posts for brief grocery stops. They just don't want you driving to every little thing you might want to do, WITHIN the Fort (like you can't drive to the pool and rec. areas, or to the campfire program, or to the hayride or the marina, etc. etc.).

There is a small parking lot at the Meadows for 15 minute stops only. Otherwise, there is no other parking at FW (except for your site or the main parking lot). There is a limit of one vehicle per site. You can drive from your site out of FW to the parks or anyplace else. Driving around FW is discouraged, however (ie no cruising the loops to look at Christmas decorations, etc).

Aha! This makes much more sense. I can see where it would take away from both the safety factor (people riding bikes, etc...) and the sense of calm that seems to be there to have people zipping through in cars 24/7. Good to know that you aren't barred from *any* driving there though. Thanks so much!
