Cars 2 is not very good at all!

As to the Spy story, I think that the plot to use eco-fuel then fake that the eco-fuel was dangerous as a way to get everyone to hate eco-fuel and use gas was a bit more that my children could grasp. The introduction sequence of Sir Miles Alexrod was just messy and gave me no emotional tie to the character. To ask that kids bring the cultural back-story of famously poorly made cars (the gremlin) and then try to shoehorn in another bit of exposition, explaining the lemons was poor storytelling. Sure, The Incedibles was also a spy thriller but with a much more understandable and emotion driven plot. Buddy is not a super, hates supers and will pretend to be a super so everyone will like him. Kids can relate. Also, Michael Caine has a recognizable but very flat voice and lacked vitality.

This was the best post in the thread. As I was watching the movie, all I kept thinking was, "I am sure my son has no idea what is going on right now." Yes, he understood as much as he had to in order to somewhat enjoy the movie, but as I expected, he had no idea about the ridiculous plot to make everyone use gas (by having everyone use eco-fuel and then fake that it was dangerous.....ugh).

I find it hard to believe that, with so much riding on a given movie, that the studio execs would have thought that the eco-fuel storyline was a good one. Did any kid under the age of 13 truly understand what was going on there? I am an elementary school teacher (grades 3-5) in a top school district, and I doubt most kids would have understood.

They would give Potter-boy great reviews even if they just showed a blank screen---

A "sublime" legacy???

Of course, people are actually going to see Zookeeper, so with the movies, anything is possible:)

Sorry, but you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much missed my point.

The legacy of the Harry Potter decade is that it is a series of BOOKS WHICH CHILDREN WANT TO READ.

Reading was one of the best gifts I received as a child. You can learn anything, travel anywhere and the options are a limited as your imagination. NONE of this happens unless you are introducted to the magic of reading.

How many people have you met that just don't like to read. I always feel so sorry for them.

The sublime legacy --- introducing children the joy of reading.

In this age of cell phones and computers, I do agree that reading is becoming a lost art.

YOU ARE SO FUNNY......reading is more popular than EVER --- at least people in my World.

We all have our noses buried in our.....computers, Ipads, Iphones and DIS boards! Reading is rampant and will never die!

I still feel so sorry for people who don't read....their lives are so limited. Children taught to love reading are the future leaders.....the rest....well, their view never changes from the back, does it.

I guess if you call reading e-mail and the Disboards actually reading---
Uncle, My family, including both daughters are huge readers. My youngest heads off to college next month and she still reads, reads, reads ... Of course she's holding an I-pad when reading now, which is where she gets her books but it isn't just games on these devices, sometimes it's just the next gen of the same ole , same ole.

Pirate: It's great that she reads, but I'm afraid your daughter is in the minority.
I'd venture a guess that for every actual book being read on these devices, there are 100 games being played.

I always get a kick out of driving by our local HS as the kids walk (those few that still do walk) to school. Nary a book to be seen, just earphones in the ears or a cell phone. Walking like Zombies, one foot in front of the other, totally unaware of their surroundings.

Hey Uncle....maybe they are actually reading Dante's Inferno on their Ipads and listening to the audio book on the Ipod!!! You don't exactly know WHAT is on these devices, do you?

Oh yes....for those who are still foolish enough to think Harry Potter is a flash in the pan....

Cars 2 1st weekend box office $66,135,507

Harry Potters first weekend box office - $476 million .... biggest Worldwide opening weekend of all time. It broke the previous record of $ 394 million held by......well what 'da know.....HARRY POTTER. It also broke the domestic debut record at $168 million formerly held by The Dark Knight, which grossed $158 million.

Don't get me wrong, for me, Beauty and the Beast should have won best picture that years and I will always love the magic our favorite little clown fish, Nemo. However, we grew up with Disney movies. Children today are growing up with Harry Potter books and also their movies and the franchise has given them fabulous books to read and extremely profitable movies.

....and Uncle, before HP broke all the records for their movies, JK broke book records. Why? Because so many CHILDREN are reading.

I'd give you $100 right now for every kid you can find walking to school reading Dantes Inferno--or anything remotely resembling it. In fact, I would bet that very few of them ever even HEARD of it:)

FAR more likely they are on Facebook, e-mail, Twitter, or buried in a scifi/fantasy game.

Afraid I'm in the camp (larger than you might think) of those who just can't see what Potter is all about. I saw the first one (gave it a 'B"), but wasn't running out and buying brooms and wands. Saw about 1/2 of the second one, but a football game came on and so I turned it off. Tried reading the books too--the first one reminded me of something I might find in an elementary school library, so I never read any more...

And that's it for my Potter "experience":)

But people obviously are taken with it, so in the grand scheme of things, that's good!!

That's because the first two movies were geared toward a younger audience, but the last four-five are geared toward an older audience.

Also I read the first two books in elementary school, and read the others as I got progressivly older.

I have to disagree. We took our DD to see it for her first time in the theatre and all of us loved it! I cannot wait for it come out on Blu-Ray!

Yea, me again.

Know what, Uncle....I met my DH almost 8 years ago standing in line at BTMRR at WDW. He is an especially wonderful man though defaults to a wee bit of a geek at times. DH was the one who added Dantes Inferno to my note - because he read it early in high school.

He is the only one of 8 children from a working class family who made it through graduate school and he did it on full scholarships. That doesn't mean his siblings don't read....they are all passionate about it and passed it along to their children.

Kids are our future.....they are worth the investment. Honestly, I'm not seeing in our world here, what you obviously see in yours.

I wish Disney would let Pixir follow the HP footprint with fabulous books, turned into fabulous Pixar movies. Then Disney would update Hollywood Studios with fabulous theming and rides. The magicians at Pixar didn't get there by bypassing books.....their imagination was fed by them. Imagine how fabulous THAT would be.....the animation version of the .....Circle of Life!!! Disney would take in so much $$$$, they couldn't count it all and it could be a long-long term success story for them. Right now, it's all $$$ going somewhere else.

....and hey, DH said you can keep the $100!!!:thumbsup2

I think every generation, when they reach a certain age, complains that the young 'uns don't read as much. I certainly heard when I was young, and I've heard the same refrain since.

Meanwhile, kids do actually read -- and today's kids are actually reading more than kids did earlier in the decade, according to the NEA:

"Young adults show the most rapid increases in literary reading. Since 2002, 18-24 year olds have seen the biggest increase (nine percent) in literary reading, and the most rapid rate of increase (21 percent). This jump reversed a 20 percent rate of decline in the 2002 survey, the steepest rate of decline since the NEA survey began.”

... and from what I understand, young adult is actually one of the brighter spots in the publishing industry at the moment.

That said, I don't think many of them are reading the Divine Comedy.

Got to remember guys that I'm 66 years old. My generation either read--or did nothing, as there wasn't much else to do:)

Observing my 3 neices and one nephew, can't see a lot of reading going on!! Nor with the kids of our friends--they always seem to be on Facebook and Twitter tho--lots of time for that!!

I never got the whole Cars movie in the first place, It's just not for me.

I agree. I was never a big fan of the Cars franchise and I really don't get building a Cars land in California. I think there are so many better properties to build a land around.

I agree... it had an interesting storyline... especially if you like james Bond Movies. We went to our local Drive In sunday... Winnie The Pooh was the 1st feature and Cars 2 wasn the 2nd on our screen. our 3 year old love Whinnie the Pooh and wastched about 15 minutes of cars 2 and fell asleep.(she loved Toy Story short!) My wife and I stayed for the whole movie... including watching all the credits. She like Brad Paisley's songs in the Credits.

Facebook and Twitter are 99% reading!!!!

When you are surfing the Internet, YOU ARE READING!!! Except of course when you watch a video.
