Leaving in a week!!! Have a long flight for us and in the past trips have just taking one carryon with the kids toys, activities to DL. This time, the air travel is a long time with a few layovers. Should each of the kids; 20dd, (she is just sleeping) but the 12 dd, 6 dd, 4 dd, take their own carryon backpacks with all their own activities on board or does the security people frown on that? I am in charge of the items that will need to be hand checked, so basically their bags are going to consist of their little lap blankets (they get cold on the planes and we are leaving very early, so hopefully go back to sleep) their coloring equipment, papers, small toys, travel games. Thanks for your opinions.

Once my kids reached the ages of yours I always had them take their own backpacks. It makes it so much more convenient and much easier on Mom. I would help them pick things and pack when they were 4 but after that they were responsible for picking packing and this is very important...carrying anything they brought! Really makes them prioritize! The other good thing is they can each put their bag under the seat and have access when they want it and not have to bug Mom everytime the want a book or a snack. It also works in case you get split up on the plane then they have what the need. It is also handy for bringing back souvenirs and other little junk kids acquire on a trip. When my DS was 2 he had a cute little Winnie the Pooh back back, now the just take their school ones but of course without all the books and stuff they are much lighter and smaller.

Good I agree. I wanted to make sure I wasn't making more work for me, but I like them being able to be independent as mom doesn't handle flying very well...LOL pumping dramamine in my system...so if they have what they need, better. And they will feel important sticking that back on the x-ray..:)

Ours love doing that. It makes the younger ones feel grown up, and they take the whole selection and packing process very seriously. You'll need to supervise, of course -- one of ours would take the kitchen sink if we let him, and I think kitchen sinks are still on the TSA no-fly list. ;)

LOL>..I have one of those! I am going to layout the stuff they can take on the plane and they can at least pack it in themselves, with me of course adjusting to make it fit. I've been getting things and they don't know what surprises they will have in so that is the fun part.

Me and my brother always had our own carryons as soon as we had our own seats in the plane. You're paying for your children's seats so of course you're more than welcome for them to each have a bag. The only thing I can say is that I see kids bags being searched more caerfully than adult bags sometimes. I think the arlines are more careful because they thing parents will hide things in their child's bag assuming they won't be searched because they're so young.

We are leaving in 4 hours and I packed my kids' (ages 3 & 5) backpacks last night. This is a surprise trip so they have no idea what is in their backpacks. I got them each a new marker book, a Disney pop-a-color crayon pencil, a Disney PEZ dispenser, some snacks, and their Leapster video game systems. We will also have the portable DVD player. Let's hope we get seats near each other to share that one. I am worried they will need more in there to keep them busy!!! I may just grab some colored paper to have them draw pictures...and grab some stickers.

OH I"M JEALOUS 4 HOURS!! I think we are sitting all together. I love the disney PEZ. I'm off to walmart today so will pick up some more disney trinkets. Mine LOVE stickers. I have been printing off some of those pages and making them a stash of them. Good for the 12 dd as she loves puzzles.

I someone pays for a seat, they get the same considerations as everyone else, regardless of age. So if you've paid for a seat, the kids would be allowed their own carryons as well as the same number of checked bags. They don't frown on it so don't worry. Heck, that's how we get some extra stuff on the plane anyway! :rotfl:

I read the title for this post "Crayons for everyone", then started reading and it wasn't about crayons at all. Then, I decided, it really WAS about crayons for everyone. :lmao:

ok, i know i need to get a life

The other good thing about separate backpacks is there is no fighting over "that's mine!" Or are my kids the only ones who do that.

Plus you don't have to spend all your time handing things out.

they do that in the car, why would i want to hear it 23000 miles in the air, plus i'm a little nervous about other passengers..don't want any problems with a scene with the kids, and the other big kid!!! :lmao: Oh get this 20 DD is saying she's going to be grumpy on the flight the whole way!! Great better get a bag for her too!!! LOL

When the big ones are grumpy that's when you really have to worry. Nothing like a whiny post teenager. :rotfl:
