i am flying airtran in march, and found on their website that carryons have to be under 55", but i couldn't find a weight limit. i'm trying to get all my luggage there just in carryons, so if anyone has an idea of how heavy they can be, i'd really appreciate it. thanks! :jumping4:

OOPPS my bad That was the wrong airline. I went to Air trans and you are correct there is no weight limit on carry on. I would still say 40 LBS though as that is a bag any heavier I wouldnt want to have to haul around. Even that is pretty heavy. I would make sure it fits under the seat and not have to try to lift it up into the overhead. WHEW OUCH my aching back LOL :cool1:

ah ok - i know that checked luggage has to be under 50lbs so i'll definately make sure my carryons are less than that. and i agree, the worst part is putting it up in the overhead rack! usually i'm lucky and some strongish person will see me struggling and come to my aid.

I have taken a small suitcase filled with pins as a carryon, it must have weighed over 60 lbs, and no one said anything to me on several different airlines. I think the main difference is that no airline personnel need to lift your carryon, so they would never know. The TSA screeners, that's another story!

On US-based carriers, there is generally no enforced carry-on weight limit. However, as a general rule, remember that *you* have to lift that case over your head to place it in the overhead bin. If you can't lift it over your head, it's too heavy to carry on.

We are flying AirTran on Saturday and I was wondering the same thing.

people , If you have to ask a weight limit for a carryon it is checked baggage . Have some consideration for those who have to help you lift it , stuff it and get it out. Check your suitcase and carry on that which fits on your shoulder only!!!!!

I disagree. This is a valid question, especially if you have ever flown on a foreign carrier. Some of them have limits as low as 12 lbs. If that is what you're thinking the limit is going to be, even packing a change of shoes becomes an issue.

I do agree that it is presumptuous to bring on a bag that you know you are not going to be able to lift into the overhead without help.

I was on a flight last year where someone brought one of those wheeled carryons onboard and had the outside pockets so stuffed that it would not fit in the overhead. So the flight attendent gave her a bag to take some of the stuff out and then she got it in. That is a bag that should have been checked.

Sorry, but this line of thinking strikes me as unacceptable. Why should anyone expect someone else to lift your FOURTY TO FIFTY pound luggage into the overhead. If YOU can't lift it, you need to check it. It is that simple! Blushing isn't enough for the lack of consideration you are showing your fellow passengers here.

Flight crews are not required to help you and I won't help you. Sorry, but I somehow doubt you are going to pay for my injury suffered while lifting this luggage.

I travel almost every week. There are times I do carryon and if I do I get in the overhead. I am not tall and like a lot of ladies I don't have the greatest upperbody strength, but I tell people even when they ask to help me. "If I can't lift it, I shouldn't bring it on" and that needs to be your motto.
You need to use baggage check!

CarolA, I agree with you!!! Why should someone help you lift your luggage into the overhead bin. You can always check your luggage. I fly quite a bit and am amazed at what people haul on the plane.

wow, i would never expect that this would turn into such a nasty debate. i don't expect anyone to help me with my luggage, and don't carryon anything i can't lift myself. often things that are well within the weight limit are difficult for me because i am short and not very strong, but i get on the plane fully prepared to lift them myself. i simply meant that i appreciate it when somebody taller & stronger offers to help out. it's like giving up your seat on a crowded bus for someone older and less able-bodied than yourself, they sure aren't expecting you to, and you're not required, but they're usually grateful. i am fully aware how to check luggage, my flight is not direct and i am concerned about my luggage not making the connection as it's happened to me before so i'm trying to just take carryons. there's no need to be so harsh.

I so agree with this! If you can't handle it yourself, don't bring it. I do not help anyone with their carry on, except maybe a mom trying to wrangle a car seat and a 16 month old. Many FA conctracts explicitly state that they are not expected to assist with luggage, and more and more I've seen them refuse to do so and offer to gate check the item instead.

I also think it's incredibly rude to put something that heavy up over someone's head. I always have an aisle seat, and if a 50 pound bag fell out of the overhad and landed on me, the owner would at least get a piece of my mind, and at worst get sued if I were injured due to their inconsideration and dare I say stupidity.

Not sure why people insist upon brining everything they own plus their neighbors lawn furniture onto the plane with them. Take a small tote with a days change of clothes, bathing suit in warmer months, and essential toiletries. The rest gets checked, and if it doesn't arrive with you, no worries, it will get there the next day before you need it.

I don't think this has turned into a "nasty" debate. (If you think this is Nasty spend some time on the CB) Most of us have just expressed our thoughts. The OP has indicated that she hopes for the kindness of strangers. I just thought you should know that lots of strangers are no longer that kind.

Also, with the flights as full as they are lately I have seen a LOT of gate checked luggage. In my experience, that is the luggage most likely to get lost (and I sometimes think it is on purpose) Gate checked luggage is not done like a stroller where it comes back to you at the next gate, it just gets thrown into the baggage compartment with all the other bags. At one point in Nashville, if you had to gate check luggage one of the airline managers had a rule... it went on the next flight. Stollers were his only exception.

I too would never presume that someone would help me lift and tuck  besides my husband  I normally travel with three kids, and quite often I am alone. No matter what, its one little carryon with some snacks and little games, my toiletries and travel docs.
A bag that I can sling over my shoulder. I am never too concerned with even a change of clothes. If push came to shove I could always find a department store for the essentials.

I just don't understand the "carryon only" mentality. Much easier to check baggage.

My dh travels 3-4 times a month and he always checks his bag too and carries his laptop.
