Carrying pepper spray?

If you have a security emergency in the park, Disney security is more than ample to handle any possible situation. Please do not bring any type of weapon into the parks. Just leave it at home.

I did accidentally carry pepper spray into Disney about 2 years ago- security never noticed, and I forgot until I was on my way out of the park.

I always had it on my key chain as I had to walk across my college alone at night a couple times a week and didn't trust the campus security.

Where I come from this would certainly be considered a weapon... Just to satisfy my own curiosity: is it really that common for people to carry pepper spray with them in the States? even on vacation? Not judging, just really curious.
I carry pepper spray on my keychain. Although, after seeing that video with the guy continuing to fight after being sprayed, I wonder how effective it would be. :scared1::confused3

I wish Tazers were legal in my state.

How long did it take for security to show up to subdue that drunk guy at Disneyland? I don't carry any weapons in when I go to Disney, but never assume that the police or security will be there to help when you need it. WHen seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

I wouldn't say common, but I bought it for my girlfriend after one of her roommates was attacked in a pretty affluent city in Mass. Her roommate saw the man crossing the street and had her hand on her pepper spray, when he grabbed her, she sprayed him right in the face. Who knows what would have happened if she didn't have it. I went home that night and ordered 2 cans online for her. She has carried it ever since.

One of my favorite sayings! Many people dont believe in being allowed to defend yourself. I however say there is no place safe, and you need to decide for yourself what you want to do about it.

Many people don't believe in irrational paranoia at the expense of living your life. Nobody has ever been murdered in a Disney park. It's one of the safest places you can go. If you worry about being attacked in a place like Disney, that's not going to lead to a good quality of life.

OP, I know your question is serious but I got the giggles imagining people having pepper spray battles over line cutting, strollers, ECVs, wheelchairs, smoking in non smoking areas, etc.
Disney would probably not want the pepper spray in the parks

weapon or not it's anyone's opinion, but the mere idea that some guests actually consider bringing pepper spray into a theme park scares me big time ...

(irony) now do I need to get me a tazer to protect myself against pepper spray weilding guests in theme parks ? I guess I'll write the NRA so they push for a bill granting me the right to bring my .308 to the parks, just in case I need it... (/irony)

exactly. Its not about not defending yourself, but how you choose to do it. Using a chemical spray around children is not a way I would defend myself. Common sense and being aware of surroundings works well for me.

I would be surprised if they allowed it in the parks. I would also be surprised if you needed it on Disney property. Are you planning on getting in a scuffle? Generally speaking, people who spend the amount of money it takes to even get to a budget resort are not interested in engaging in inappropriate behavior. The cost of everything pretty much keeps out anyone with the wrong intentions. Also, Disney protects itself pretty well with plenty of cast members both visible and not. They would be there in a minute if you needed that kind of assistance.

I would not take it. All you are going to do is slow down the security line as you attempt to bring it in.
Have fun and good luck.

I think it would be easy all day to debate items that could be used as weapons, such as the hands of a trained fighter or a straw. However the question was about whether or not Disney considered a certain item a weapon, not whether or not other items could be weapons.

Why would you ever want to carry a weapon into Disney? Under what circumstances would you use it? And please I hope security would confiscate it. I don't want anyone spraying my child or wife for god sake people Its a "happy place" isn't it?

Well, Disney doesn't confiscate a weapon if you bring one (maybe a gun though). During our last trip we were camping at Fort Wilderness. DH had been using his pocket knife at our campsite in the afternoon. He stuck it in his pocket, then we went to MK in the evening and he completely forgot the knife was there. Security saw it hooked onto the pocket of his shorts and escorted him over to small lockers they have near the entrance. They took a report and DH was able to get into the park no problem and pick up his knife on the way out.

I would just avoid bringing the pepper spray to the park. It's highly unlikely that you would need it and it's just one less thing to carry. I have pepper spray on my keychain in case of emergencies. You just never know when you might need it. That said, I would never take it into a place like Disney. I don't think it's necessary and with so many people you'd hate for a child to get hurt by it.

Wow to all the responses that seem to be attacking the OP. I didn't read the original post as in, "I want to bring my pepper spray to Disney so I can pepper spray someone"... I read it as "I keep pepper spray attached to my keys at all times and I don't know whether I need to remove it or not." That said, I would probably remove it and leave it at home. Also, I live in a nice neighborhood in Midtown Atlanta and with a fiance that travels frequently, I carry pepper spray.

I've seen security turn someone away who had pepper spray in her purse. If they see it, you won't be able to go into the parks until you get rid of it (put it in a locker or toss it).

Imagine if they did let pepper spray in. People get bent out of shape over everything. Could you imagine - what I can't use my fastpass late - pepper spray. No ADR and an hour late for a table - pepper spray.

Note: this is all in jest and I am not implying that the op or anyone in this thread would pepper spray a cm.
