First time cruiser question ... What kind of carry on do you take onboard? I've read lists of items I may want/need in my carry on since our luggage won't be delivered until late afternoon or early evening. Do people walk around the ship with smaller wheeled suitcases until their stateroom is ready? Or are backpacks the best option?

Lots of people take wheeled, carry on sized, suitcases with them. They are especially helpful if you are carrying on beverages since those have to be in your carry on and can be heavy.

My husband & I both use a backpack. It carries all that we need to have immediately. You basically only need to carry any electronics, beverages, medications, and ID necessary for boarding the ship.

Some people also bring an extra change of clothes. But that's really not necessary.

DH prefers to carry on his lap top. I also carry on my small amt of jewelry. The biggest thing we carry with us is our stash of Diet Dr. Pepper. The crew has offered to help us drink it.

We go lite...a Kyss bag or backpack with documents, camera, phones, magnets, and meds. Daughter wears her bathing suit under her clothes so she can hit the pool immediately. If you check-in early (and are not bringing any beverages on-board) I think it's a hassle to have anything "big".

To determine your carry-on ask yourself:
1. What do I need before 5pm?
2. What do I need in the next 24 hours that could be life threatening if I don't have?
3. What is not allowed in checked baggage?

That will tell you what must be in your carry-on. Everything past that is extra based on what you are willing to carry. When you get to port matters too. Someone showing up when the port opens and boarding in group 3 will have to carry their bag around much longer than someone showing up at 1:00 and walking straight to their room after checking in.
