OK, once again the government in all it collective wisdom has knee jerked it's way into letting the terrorist groups win by default.

I mean really, if the security people cannot tell the difference between an explosive and deodorant then perhaps it's time for some new security people. We are not all terrorists and to make the public throw away innocent merchandise so they don't have to actually use their brains and check it out is, OK I'll say it....STUPID!

I would wager right now that this idiocy will be over with in a few weeks or even days. Can you imagine someone checking an expensive lap top into the bowels of the airport baggage handling area. That would be the last time they would see that, not to mention the last time it will probably ever work again. I, myself, have a CPAP machine that I must take with me or I cannot breath at night while asleep. I cannot afford to have it lost or damaged even for one night. I have to carry it on. Medicine is another topic. A pill will not blowup a plane no matter how hard it tries.

This nation and it wingtipped weenies in Washington have lost all common sense to panic and submission. If someone wants to blow up a plane why can't they do it in checked luggage as well as carry on. It is absolutely ridiculous. It makes me sad to think that we are that foolish and that wimpy. I'd rather go down with dignity then be afraid all my life. Maybe we should just ground all airplanes until all the terrorists have been eliminated.

OK, vent is over...I feel much better now. I will not fly with these restrictions but I at least feel better.

While I understand the need for increased security measures, I am appalled at the huge waste of travelers' toiletries! I wish new, never-used items could somehow be donated to hospitals/relief organizations/shelters, instead of just being tossed like unwanted garbage! I, for one, would be upset at our govt if they DIDN'T take measures following the uncovering of this latest plot. We're talking about dealing with people who calmly take a half decade or longer planning the most catastrophic, dramatic event possible. These guys will use boxcutters (9-11-01) or Gatorade and a disposable camera (8-06) to paralyze us. That's their goal. Al Qaeda could care less if I have my shampoo. So IMHO we let the terrorists win by refusing to travel, not by traveling without toothpaste and hair gel.

After 9-11 we went down to NYC on purpose because so many people were afraid to go to the city. And I know the terrorists could care less what I personally do in repsonse to their shenanigans, but at least I would know I did it. So if I didn't have a 5-month old at home I would hop a plane right now, ANYWHERE, just to feel like I did my part to throw it back in their faces.

And I would do it with greasy hair, smelly underarms, and food in my teeth if I had to.

I was just going over my packing list to remove any liquids and chapstick and wondered about deoderant solids and gels. Seems to me these will not be allowed either but no one has said anything about them. Just a thought.

Well, no. My understanding is that at least one potential form of the explosives was dyed to match a particular beverage, and poured into one of those bottles. It was then topped off with the actual drink in case screeners required the terrorists to drink from the bottle to prove it was a beverage, not a bomb.

I've wondered about my inhaler (asthma) since the perscription is on the box which I throw away - I wonder if I should pick up a refill so I have that label?

Yes you need the label on the box.

Could you just ask the pharmacy to print another label, and attach that directly to your inhaler?

So, how are they preventing someone with a prescription for liquid medicine replacing those medicines with something to make a bomb? I'm sure there are terrorists with diabetes, asthma, etc. And what will be done if luggage, with all these items now checked, is lost? That happens all too often anyway. My sisters luggage was lost for 3 days for a one day trip--she didn't get her luggage until she was home for 2 days!

As far as contacts, water would work in the lens case in a pinch, right? I would do that(from the airplane restroom, or if the stewardess has bottled water as an option.)

All I can say is I'm glad I turned down the great DING fair that I got last month for our trip. We are driving down.

After reading some of these posts, I have realized why the airport attendents get angry and have problems w/ people. We have all become comfy w/ the things that make us happy when we fly (especially my chapstick, lipgloss... etc) but during a time like this its important to follow their rules and regulations. God for bid, but lets say this threat did go thru, and god for bid we lost family and freinds that we love, all of you would be saying thank god they do the things they do. Its not allowing the goverment to rule our lives, its about them taking precautions to make sure we are safe... WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL W/ WAITING UNTIL THE FLIGHT LANDS TO PUT UR CHAPSTICK ON. We all had chapped lips before, if it has to wait it has to wait...
As for prescripitions, I have been hearing the same thing as all of you and as long as your prescription is under your name w/ proof you will be fine.
I also agree w/ one of the above posters who said they shouldnt be throwing all these new items in the garbage... they should put it to good use and give it to people that do need it.
IMO; stay as calm as we could and hope that everything goes smooth, quick and painless.

I agree with you completely. What I am upset about is the automatic OVER reaction to any event. The blatant disregard for peoples possessions, all in the name of security. I'm not boycotting flying because of the terrorist possibility but that we are literally placing ourselves in a prison of fear. I find that to be ridiculous.

I'm not afraid to fly based on any actual or nearly actual happenings. I am being forced not to fly because MY government is restricting what can be taken on planes regardless of their need or lack of real threat. This alleged "plot" was not discovered at an airport, it was culminated at an airport. They would not have caught 24 people in a "by chance" catch by an incredibly alert security person. They knew about this way before it got to the danger point. So, it actually never was a danger.

Before too long we will have to be naked to fly in a plane, bring absolutely no luggage and die of unmedicated illnesses just to get from place to place. A bomb does not have to explode to be an effective terror devise.

I have doctor's orders to keep my lips moisturized at all times. As silly as you may think that is, I am a mouth-breather and have chronically chapped lips that get very painful. I have to reapply my lipbalm every 20-30 minutes. I wouldn't last a flight to WDW and certainly not to DL (I live in NY). If I have the need to fly any time soon, I will have my doctor write me a note. For lip balm. How silly that I need a note to carry lip balm. I must be a criminal. No? Just an American citizen being punished for someone else's action.

Everyone's talking about their makeup being confiscated. Are we talking liquid concealer or powder eyeshadow. Powder eyeshadow, is, powder, hence the name. No liquid or gel in there. Where does eyeliner go? Liquid eyeliner is liquid, fine. What about a pencil?

Truthfully I'd rather just drive the 20 hour drive to WDW than deal with this airport nonsense. I'm tired of being treated like a criminal.

But despite this incident being thwarted, this was not the first time this kind of plot had been in the works. Ten years ago the plan was to blow up planes leaving from Asia for the west coast. It was only because of an accidental fire in one of the terrorists' apartments in Manila that the plot was ever revealed. So I'm glad for the new measures because I actually think they may have been overdue. Clearly terrorists are not beyond trying something over and over until they get it right. I think the danger is constant. Someone is hatching a new plot right now.

Your argument is well put though, and I can see where you're coming from. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

I agree witih Snowy76......I think we will have to agree to disagree on many of these points. Lots of people make valid arguments, but we don't all have to agree about them. If someone would rather drive 20 hours instead of flying, that is your prerogative. I personally would rather be safe than sorry and I am sure there will be exceptions made to these rules in the future. I personally do not feel that the government is punishing us for someone else's actions, but rather I am thankful that we live in a country where the government is very concerned about our well being. And if you do not agree with me, that also is your right, again, because of the type of government we have (freedom of speech, etc.). Okay, now I am getting down from my soapbox!

3 of us that are traveling next week (I'm so excited ) use disposable contact lenses. We have enough lenses for our vacation that are sealed in the original containers from the eye dr. There is liquid in each of the containers. I'm extremely nervous to put these in my checked luggage because my prescription is such that they are not stocked and typically take a week to 10 days to arrive after ordering. Any idea if these will be allowed? I'm planning to just wear my glasses on the flight because I don't have to worry about carrying drops or solution then.

They weren't. Neither item was noticed or confiscated.

I totally forgot about the VERY front pocket of my backpack (that I used as a diaper bag) had lipgloss, a moisture stick (for son's face) and infant tylenol. They confiscated it, but were gonna let me through with the tylenol....I told them to throw it away because I really didn't need it and didn't want to get in trouble. This was at a small airport. On the way back (so in Orlando), my friends got stopped for liquid medicine and a matchbox car. Both were let through though.

And back to the original question on solid deoderant...there was a sign that said it was allowed! But I didn't try to bring it through.

I flew out last Monday and was chosen for a gate bagcheck. He looked at my lipstick and did not take it. According to what I heard last week, chapstick and lipstick (solid) are OK, as well as solid deodorant.

My wife and I just came back from Disney World and carried on our 'solid' deoderant as well as chapstick without any issue. The way to get it on is to present it when being screened and they will check it and verify that it is solid!

do you think i can bring on nasal spray for the kids and how about decongention pills and my birth control pills - i'd hate for them to get lost.

I just checked Delta's website and they have updated it to say that you can bring on up to 4oz. of non-prescription meds (aspirin, Bonine, etc.) and solid deoderant and solid lip balm, as well as solid lipstick in a tube.
