I posted this on the Community Board but since it impacts our budget pretty significantly, I thought I'd post it here as well.

We're in a huge dispute right now with Lowe's. Long story short, they completely screwed up our order from the very beginning.

The carpet was installed Saturday but the pad is wrong. They are saying that they will replace the pad and re-stretch the carpet to fit. We're concerned that they carpet will not fit properly once they take it out and install the new pad.

The room is basically a rectangle with a cut out for the fireplace in the corner. The edge of the carpet was rolled under and nailed down along the tile of the fireplace and under the metal strip going into our kitchen.

How will they be able to get the carpet up and the nails out without damaging the carpet to re-install it?

What are the chances that they will get it back in place with all of the cuts lining up?

The pad that is in now is a Stainmaster 8lb pad. The new pad is a Stainmaster 21lb pad. The new pad is so much thicker than the pad when they cut the carpet, how will the carpet fit? Will the new pad be squished?

Also, the room is wider then the carpet so they had to seam it. Instead of putting one long seam like our old carpet was, they seamed 4 small pieces in instead. The carpet is 12 ft wide and our room is about 14ft 9inches wide.

Here are some pictures.

Any advice or opinions you have are appreciated. Thanks!

Carpet can be re-stretched and usual needs to be over the life of it.
Lowes uses outside contractors that are hired to do the work so they will simply not pay the contractor until they fix the problem...
These are common problems with lowes... but not saying anyone else is better. as mistakes happen and simply some installers Lowes, HD or? are just not very good.
If you are looking for a discount tell them.. but do not expect much as in the end it was the installers fault and that is who will pay for the fix.
in the end you have two option 1 have them fix the problem 2 ask for a discount and leave it.

The installer seamed the carpet incorrectly but Lowe's ordered the wrong pad in the beginning. It's a long story in the series of problems that I had with them but I questioned the pad when I paid for it. I was told that since there was a promo for a free upgraded pad, they charged me for the low end but the order center would know to order the upgrade. I should have trusted my instincts but clerk was asking the store manager since he usually doesn't work in flooring and didn't know what he was doing.

We had MANY problems with Lowe's and their installers with our carpets about 4 years ago as well. We ended up with a credit & the installer making 3 trips to "fix" their mistakes on installation. Lowe's continued to insist we for " their best installers". Our rugs were bubbled in less than a year and at least one looks much more worn than it's age.

I hope you get it resolved to your expectations. We didn't have the best experience & consider it an education. When we upgraded the kitchen, countertops were from a countertop guy, not a big box....wouldn't even look at the big box stores.

Good luck, I've been there too!

Yeah, I had very bad luck using lowes a decade ago for wall to wall carpet. I tried Home Depot in the next house and it was almost as bad. They basically act like they aren't responsible for the incompetence of their subs. In my current house I used a very reputable flooring company. Major improvement.

A good carpet installer should have no problem replacing the pad and re-installing the carpet. I have the subfloor buckle under my carpet. They pulled up the carpet from a 16 x 16 bedroom with a walk in closet and the pad, fixed the floor, put the pad back down, and stretched it into place. Cut about 4 inches of carpet off. But the carpet is 20 years old, and had never been touched before.

I've actually had re-installs look BETTER than the original...when the builder had to fix squeaks in our sub-floor, the carpet was cut and had to be re-seamed. Second time around I couldn't even see where it was pieced in.

Brand new carpet? I don't think I would worry...and if it DOES come out bad, well then you get Lowe's to fix it. Take 'before' pictures and if there is a problem once the new pad is down, take 'after' pictures to visibly demonstrate what is wrong.

As having a carpet cleaning business, my DH has to re stretch carpet all the time. There should be no problem doing this. He has been doing this for over 30 years. There are times when seaming has to be done. If done properly you won't notice. Just so you know, two types of stretchers one is a knee kicker, and the other is a power stretcher.
