I see another Carnival ship had a fire at sea. The fire is out, but they have no propulsion. They are adrift in the Gulf. Reports say no one was injuried.

my friend's daughter is on that cruise right now with her dad.... She has not been allowed to talk to her. :-(

The latest is they are going to tow them to Progresso Mexico, but won't reach there until Wednesday. the next 2 cruises have been cancelled. Another Carnival ship is there giving them food and supplies. They have an emergency number set up for family members. I wonder how they are going to handle the passengers without passports. They are refunding their cruise fare and I can't remember what other compensation they are giving them.

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH - Update

February 10, 2013 – 7.30PM EST

This morning the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced an engine room fire while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room. At this time, the fire is fully extinguished. There were no casualties or injuries to guests or crew. All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified.

The vessel is currently without propulsion and the ship is operating on emergency generator power. The ship's technical crew has determined the vessel will need to be towed to port. A tugboat is en route to the ship's location and will tow the vessel to Progreso, Mexico, which is the closest port to the ship’s current location. This will enable us to disembark guests and get them home as quickly as possible. The ship is expected to arrive in Progreso Wednesday afternoon and guests will be flown from there back to the U.S.

There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew on board. Guests are being provided with food and refreshments. Another Carnival ship, the Carnival Elation, is currently on scene and transferring additional food and beverage provisions to the Carnival Triumph.

We have contacted the designated emergency contacts for all guests presently on board Carnival Triumph. Concerned family and loved ones of guests and crew may call 888.290.5095 or 305.406.5534.

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund of the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

The next two voyages of Carnival Triumph, scheduled to depart Monday, February 11 and Saturday, February 16 are being cancelled. Guests scheduled to sail on either of those voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses and a 25 percent discount on a future three to five-day cruise. Carnival is in contact with impacted guests to advise them of the situation.

The current Carnival Triumph voyage departed Galveston, Texas on Thursday, February 7 and was scheduled to return on Monday, Feb. 11.

I wouldn't travel without one! We has to disembark in St Thomas last year, luckily a passport was moot due to it being a US territory, but had it been the next day we would have been in St Martin and it would have been a lot more difficult! We cannot control when emergencies happen, and I like the piece of mind that little book gives me.

Oh my goodness, how many people don't have passports? I'm betting it's a pretty large percentage. I'm guessing the embassy is in overdrive these next couple of days. Yikes. :upsidedow

My brother and his family are currently on a Carnival ship out of Canaveral--got a little panicked when I saw the title of this thread! Glad no one was injured, but this just adds to Carnival's ship maintenance woes. This article is from last year, and even this one from 2 weeks ago. Many people love this cruise line, my brother included, but I just don't trust this company. I don't care how much cheaper it is.

This is one of the reasons that I don't cruise on Carnival. And that's with 2 ships each week leaving from less than a mile away from my house. They pass so close by that I can watch them from my living room, yet I have no desire to book one. P.S. I seriously doubt those traveling without passports will have any additional issues. Carnival has 2 days to coordinate with Progresso to get everyone situated with their travel home. You'd probably have more issues if you were the only one disembarking, but not so much with a couple thousand other people. Extenuating circumstances and the sheer number of people will promote a heightened level of sensitivity to those traveling without a passport. They'll be fine.

Just reinforces that it pays to sail on Disney! So glad everyone on board is okay.

Talk about guardian angels. My grandmother and cousin just got off that boat on Thursday. I am so happy they aren't on it while this is going on because my grandmother is on so many medications and she typically only caries an extra day or two. I'm going to start warning her to carry an extra weeks worth just in case. Also I'm not sure if they have passports or not.

My hearts go out to the families and everyone on board. I know no one was hurt but still being stranded on a boat can't be fun. Especially when many of these people probably have jobs and school they should be back to but now will be late.
