I'm trying something new this fall. I've taken 4 Disney cruises and I'm looking forward to DRIVING to a port instead of flying. So my options are Carnival Liberty vs. RCCL Explorer. They both have great reviews.
The price is about the same, however, Carnival Miracle is an 8 night cruise and Explorer is ony 5 nights.
Disney is a tough act to follow. I will miss the freshwater pools, snack bars on the pool deck, etc. etc, so I WILL BE BACK.
Any feedback would be helpful. I have cabins on hold with RCCL, then I saw Carnival Liberty's itinerary yesterday. HELP!

We would NEVER book Carnival again......we have cruised RC, Disney & Holland and would do them all again.

My dh and I have cruised 3 times with RCCI and loved it! In fact, we are going for #4 in October. The Explorer is fantastic!! Huge in comparison to the Wonder or Magic.

I'm not sure if you are asking about Carnival's Miracle or the Liberty. Your heading mentioned Mirace, bit later you stated the Liberty's iternary.

Anyway, I can help you with the Miracle. We have done the Magic twice, the Miracle once and we are rebooking the Miracle for this fall again. The Miracle is Carnival's crystal Eagle winner 3 years in a row. Which means it has been voted Carnivals top ship by it's guests. The layout is quite similar to DCL, practically the same tonage. So it's easy to navigate. We preferred the buffets on the Miracle, there was more variety. But we prefer Palos, much better than Nick & Nora's (the adult resuarant on Mircale). The staff was pleasant, efficient, and helpful on the Miracle, just not over the top like Disney's cast. I missed the DCL horn! and especially the sailaway party. The Miracle does nothing at sail away. The shows were good, but a little more adult oriented on Carnival.

We are booking the Miracle's southern carribean route, I can't wait. If you are doing the Libery, it is doing the route we did last spring on the Miracle. Belize is amazing. If you go to Belize, be sure to get up before sunrise and watch the ship navigate through all the islands to get there.

Hope this helps.

Have to add more about Carnival.....The service is fair as is food and cabins no matter what price range you book. We have just had overall much better experience on RCC & Holland. Each line also has a different type of cruiser so you have to do a little more research and see what is right for you.pirate:

I'd have to agree with that too! We did a very small, European line our first time in 2002, wouldn't do it again. Just was a great deal at the time (buy one, get one free!!)... And then we've done 2 on Carnival and loved them!! Always had great service, wonderful rooms (did a balcony this last time and loved that!) and good food! I've never done DCL, so I can't compare them, but I didn't want to at the time, since we don't take our kids on the cruises. And I would imagine DCL is totally family oriented.

Oh, and my parents have done Princess cruises about 5 times (Caribbean, Mexican, Alaskan, etc...) and they love them! Much better suited to what they enjoy. So it really depends on what you're looking for.

We also have stayed with Carnival since they offer a really good military discount. We go with 3 other military couples too, so it's good for everyone...

Good luck deciding!

I've heard a lot of negative comments about Carnival, but this particular ship has great reviews, that's why I'm considering it. I'm sure the older inexpensive "party fleet" isn't a very good family experience, and some of the better ships are somewhere in between. But how about their better ships, like the Miracle?
I value the opinion of fellow Dis-ers, because they understand quality !!!!

are the military discounts for active military or do retired military qualify?

We were on it and just didn't stack up to past cruises. I think Carnival has very devoted cruisers because of the price but you can get some great deals on better lines if you just do a little searching.....

Both!! Our group consists of 2 active (Reserves) and 2 retired (Reserves) and we all get the discount.

We did the Fantasy the first time with our group cuz they wanted to do just a 3-day. Not my choice... But it was nice, not fabulous, but it was a smaller, older ship for sure. This last time we did the Glory and it was really nice! We loved our room with the balcony this time. Had great meals the entire time, wonderful service, excellent dinner waiter, and had a really great time!

We were planning another one this year, but financially, we're probably not going to be able to swing it. Although we've been lucky, we did those last two (Nov. 2005 & 2006) without our kids! So, very lucky to have great parents who babysit. I just didn't want to take infants/toddlers on the cruise. I love cruising though!!

We've done 3 Carnival cruises (Inspiration 2004, Imagination 2005, Liberty 2006) then our 1st DCL earlier this month. We always take our kids and my parents love to cruise so they come too. Hands down, we all agreed the service on DCL is better. Of course you pay more so you just have to try it to see if it's worth it to you. I liked the little things like hand wipes outside each dining room, kid-friendly trays, fireworks, lots of family entertainment, Dis. characters.

We tried the Liberty after realizing the 1st 2 cruises were on older ships. Liberty was 6 mos. old when we sailed it. It was almost too big. Remember, no matter how many decks a ship has, there can only be 1 pool deck. The chairs on the Liberty covered almost every sq. inch of the deck and still was really hard to find a chair and we're early risers. You could barely walk just so crowded. (much more packed-in than the older, smaller ships) We did love the huge slide on the Liberty. We're not super active on our cruises and spend a large part of our day swimming/lounging by the pool. Liberty also has the big screen above the pool and showed Shrek and Finding Nemo. My boys 6 & 10 thought the Mickey slide/pool was for "babies." One nice touch on Carnival: the doors to the buffet area on the pool decks all have decorative glass doors that slide open automatically when you approach. It just skeeved me to touch the door pulls to go to Topsider's. You would think DCL would have thought of this considering there are so many strollers too. Sure would help parents trying to juggle food trays and children.

While Carnival has a kid's club, my kids weren't too fond of it and it's much smaller than DCL, but don't judge by my kid's taste cuz they didn't want to go to DCL club either.(1 day for 2 hrs, that's it! :confused3 )

Liberty's arcade was about quadruple DCL's: 4 air hockey tables and lots more games, even the kind you sit on and moves you around like virtual roller coaster thing. (hard to explain but it was neat) Carnival had a huge chess board on the pool deck-each piece is like 2-3 ft. tall. Looked like fun but we never did it so I didn't miss it on DCL.

Staterooms were similar in size (we had oceanview on all 4) Liberty's are 220 sq. ft. DCL's are 214, older Carnival's are 185. More & larger drawers on the Liberty. Same safe. The split bath on DCL made family living a lot easier. My boys could both brush teeth w/o fighting over sink, etc. I like the big curtain DCL offers that separates the "living room" from the "bedroom." Being the only female in the cabin with 3 males, I could shut the curtain and get dressed while kids watched tv. (on Carnival dh would take them to the arcade while I showered/dressed or I'd do both in the hot, steamy bathroom-way too hot!)

Stateroom host/hostess service was equal but no towel animal on last night with Carnival. :confused3
Room service is available on Carnival on day of debarkation which was a huge let down for me on DCL.
Dining room service was equal but more fun on DCL with rotational dining and Pirate night. Much noisier on DCL since there's so many more kids. Didn't bother me but I guess it would bother some people. Overall, food was way better on Carnival, somewhat bland on DCL esp. the steak. Loved those Mickey bars on DCL!

After dinner entertainment on Liberty is mostly adult oriented, not necessarily rated R but boring for kids. There are some shows a kid could go to but here's where DCL won my heart: every night we had great family entertainment. Good wholesome stuff like magic shows, jugglers, singing comedians, and Broadway-like shows. Then later had an adults-only comedian which was hilarious too.

While I liked the photo packages available at Shutters, I like that on Carnival if you buy the original, you can get a reprint done any size you want, whereas on DCL if it comes in 8x10 all reprints must still be 8x10, which is basically a 6x8 with a fun border.

This part may sound corny but the crowd on DCL seemed much nicer and more polite. While I never saw the "party animals and drunks" that people think of when they think of Carnival, there would occasionally be some loud idiot that was mildly annoying. On the other hand, some people would find lots of whining/crying babies, toddlers, strollers and kids on DCL annoying. My bro & SIL (who have 1 grown child) came with us on the Liberty and declined DCL in search of a "quieter" atmosphere. I guess it depends on what is annoying to you.
Overall, if I had to vote for 1 or the other, I'd definitely pick DCL. True, it does cost a lot more but we had such a blast I just can't wait to do it again. I'd rather do DCL once every 2 years than Carnival every year.
JMHO! ;)
sorry this is sooo long!

My Two cents.
If someone bought me a Carnival cruise as a gift, I would tell them to keep the gif. I will, and I can't stress this enough, NEVER cruise on them again. I have taken two and that was two to many. I have never ben on RCL, but it can't be any worse than Carnival. I think beating eaten by a shark is more fun than a cruise on Carnival. That's my opion.

Ruadisneyfan-Thanks for the break down, it was awesome!

aan1701- what ship did you sail and why do you hate it so much?

Since Carnival was our 1st cruising experience, we had nothing else to compare it to. We were well fed and never bored. Every time I booked another, I compared price to DCL and couldn't see spending so much more. (We were still seeing Mickey at least 1-2x/yr between/after cruises.)
Now that I've been on DCL, I think it would be hard to go back. My Carnival experience made my DCL trip that much more enjoyable. If someone only knows DCL and tries Carnival, I think they'd be disappointed, esp. if you have children.

I have cruised on RCCL 5 times and just recently on DCL. All were great and there are good and bad with both. If asked to choosethough, for the money, I think RCCL provides a good product. I have a 6 yo son and he actully said he liked RCCL's kids club better than DCL. I think the food is also better on RCCL. Either way, you won't be dissapointed.

Tried Carnival once and never again... We have cruised Princess once and it was nice, we are going on RCCL Jewel of the Seas in April.

We feel the same way!!!! I can't think of one good thing to say about Carnival!

In all fairness, you can not begin to compare the Carnival Fantasy to the Carnival Miracle, or the Sovereign of the Seas to the Explorer.
The 3 night cruises are the older budget ships and of course, aren't in the same league.
Deb Wills is comparing 3 night cruises to Disney Wonder's 3 night cruise. That's a no-brainer! The Wonder blows those other ships away!

I hated them so much because they were Rdue, Rude,Rude, and did I forget to metion Rude. They yell at kids durring the safty drill and the food stinks.
