Caribbean Beach FAQ part V

Has anyone ever requested a second floor room? I know most folks prolly request a first floor so they don't need to go up the stairs....I was thinking of requesting a second floor so there would be less traffic outside the first floor. Other then the obvious (not wanting to walk up stairs) does anyone have pros and cons to staying on one floor vs the other? I booked a perferred room so I know that means one village over another but do folks ever request and second floor?

We always request a second floor at CBR. It's only one flight of stairs to climb! We just think the second floor is a little quieter and there is less chance of "critters" coming in when housekeeping has the door propped open!

We had a first floor room at CBR and loved it. I didn't mind the foot traffic outside my room at all, but then we were there in January and there wasn't much foot traffic. One thing I thought I'd mention...for anyone who has a stroller, a second floor room would be a bit of a hassle.

We had a second floor room at POFQ a few years ago. We were on the stairway end of the building, so we could either walk further, passing up our room, take the elevator, and walk back to our room, or we could carry the stroller up the stairs. Usually I chose to carry it up and down, but DD was big enough at the time to get out and walk up and down the stairs by herself. Since CBR doesn't have elevators, you'd definitely need to carry the stroller up and down.

Checked in to CBR this morning. I'm a bit surprised at how crowded it is! I hope this doesn't translate into very large crowds. :headache:

The resort is as beautiful as I remember it. The walks aren't bad at all. Looking forward to a great week! :goodvibes

P.S. I'm on the lookout for DISers! If anyone sees me (I'm sporting an Evil Queen bag with a hidden LGMH), be sure to say "hi"! :thumbsup2

SO...I read about the smore's and movies by the pool. What else are little extras that this magical hotel holds? We will be there Sept 1st. Is there any place online that posts these little treasures so we know in advance to not miss out. Thanks!!

We just returned from CBR last night at 1am. We were there Sunday to Friday and it was our first time. We had a pirate room that was a first floor corner room (3601) to be exact. Obviously this was Trinidad South.

We LOVED IT. It really was fantastic. Some of the reviews out there had be nervous, but it was such a total non-issue. Our room was clean and light and a little bigger than I expected. We had towel animals everyday, sometimes more than one. Mousekeeping always left our kids' animals and books/toys posed in the cutest arrangements. The grounds are gorgeous, the pool is amazing, the walk to PR is not too long. The cast members were for the most part extremely friendly and helpful.

The pirate rooms are so much cuter in person than in the pictures. The plank carpeting looked less than comfy in the pics, but it's nice and soft carpet with a pirate ship look. I also thought the rooms looked to dark and yellow in the pics as compared to the Nemo rooms, but not so in person. The wood crate dresser is spacious and the barrels for the fridge and by the bedside work and look fine. There's even more storage in the treasure chest. My 3 and 6 year old kept playing Captain Hook and steering the bed. The curtain separating the sink area is thicker and more solid than I expected. We kept the light on at the sinks at night and closed the curtain, and the light shone behind the skull, making a very, very cool nightlight. The skull lights up great. My DH timed the leisurely walk to Port Royale at 8 minutes.

On the downside- the posts about the toilet/bath are being tiny are correct. If you want a large toilet and tub area, this is not for you. But the sink area is larger and more useful with the curtain than I expected. I thought the curtainw as silly before I went, but it actually came in extremely useful, especially with sleeping little ones.

Also, yup, the beds are double (unless you have the king rooms). It is what it is. If you need queen, go elsewhere. As far as comfort of the pirate beds... I expected them to be hard, and I like hard beds. They were a little too soft for me. They do have a less thick mattress than your standard bed, on top of a box spring. I found this to be a non issue and they were the same as any other bed in my opinion. Too soft for my taste but no different than another bed. Not crazy about double, but that's no different than the Nemo rooms, and it was fine.

I've read reviews that claim this is just a huge motel. I beg to serioulsy differ. I've never been to a motel that was ever this fantastic. YES, the rooms open to the outside world and the second floor has no elevator, but that is part of the Caribbean feel. There are other resorts if you want the indoor thing, and if you are here to walk the parks, can you really not climb a flight of stairs? In any case, the rooms do have a basic motel layout inside, though they were slightly larger than I expected. The theming added a lot inside.

On the outside however, wow, how awesome! We are not people who like the crowds and glitz and mayhem, so for us, after spending the day in the park, the relaxing feel of this resport was totally what we needed. It was perfect. It is extremely relaxed and beautiful, with plenty of options and things to do.

The main pool (or "loud pool" as my DD says- opposite of the quiet pools) is great. One large but straight and slower slide and one tunnel super fast slide in the main area. Of course, then there is the pirate ship slides for tots. My DD loved the scheduled pool dances and beach ball games. Every evening there's a marshmallow roast. Yes, they set up movies in the evening. They have crafts and other ways of participating.

The Caribbean Cay island is great. I just wish they had it open after dark (you can still pass through to port royale but the nooks and playground get closed off).

The walk around the whole pond/lake is very pleasant. Every villiage seems to have its own set of pluses and minuses and it's really hard to go wrong. I will say that in my opinion, the rooms that face the parking lots are at a huge disadvantage. We didn't request a water or garden view room, but we seemed to get a garden one anyway. We only requested a corner, which we did get. I would say any of the inside facing or water view rooms on either first or second floor are fantastic. Parkinglot ones, less so. The corner corner rooms aren't larger, but they are brighter since they have a second big window. I think I saw a mirror in place of the window in one of the non-corner rooms.

Yes, you can see Epcot's Illuminations from the Port Royale deck/picnic tables, or from some of the beaches (Trinidad North for certain).

It's true, CBR seems to be among the furthest station for bus pickups at the parks. Not sure what that's about but it's true. Not a big deal.

Depending on which direction the bus drops people off at on the way back, it can be tiring to get to your island.

Yes, the little court yards are designated smoking areas, but we rarely saw anyone smoking in them. We used them to sit and read while the kids played ride and seek or napped, and we also sometimes ate dinner at the tables there. I imagine if a large bus/group staying there could really ruin this, but for us it worked out as a great little quiet area. I have to wonder... we saw lots of busses parked in Jamaica. Do they not book large teams/groups in the pirate rooms? If that's the case, it's a huge selling point for Trinidad South. I have no idea.

During the day, when you'd typically be at the park, it can be quite noisy. They seem to always be either power washing the building or blowing leaves off the walks, or edging the grass. It's only a couple hours or so and then it's back to the calm. You can see that it must be hard to keep up the perfect look of the buildings, and yet they do a great job.

If you want CBR pizza, it's MUCH cheaper to walk it back to your room than have it delievered. It's surprisngly tasty, though it seems crazy to me that a Caribbean Beach resort does not offer ham and pineapple. I was told they used to, and got rid of the pineapple. So much for the island feel when it comes to pizza!

Overall, we found the food choices to be just fine, varied and tasty.

While I was there, there was a 5' alligator that chased the morning beach comber person. There was another cast member at the beach when I brought the kids there in the morning, and I was talking to another guest who had just talked to the CM. The guest said he was told by the cm that usually they move on, but this one had been spotted a few times so would be caught. Still, it was sobering. Obviously, it doesn't appear to be a big issue as you never hear of a problem and people are all over those beaches at all hours, but it's certainly good to keep in mind.

Sorry this got so long. Overall, we truly loved it here. If we ever go back to Disney, we will definitely choose this resort again. It was just what we were looking for. Our trip was just too short. Hope all that information is helpful to someone.

Thank you for that great review! We are 45 days days away from our first Disney vacation and although we do not have a pirate room I love reading these reviews and getting more and more excited to get there!!

mjo99, Thank you so much for that great review. Our upcoming trip will be our first time staying here. I'm a little hesitant about it, but it was all that was available with our pin code when I finally decided to upgrade from All Stars. Your review made me feel so much better. I think my kids will love the pool area and my mother and aunt will love the theme. Something for everyone!

Thanks MJO99... we are also staying there for the first time and was a bit concerned, but I think we will be alright. Do you have any pictures that you can share of the room?? TIA

I'm so glad you wrote a LONG review!!! Don't be sorry at all, this is exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you so much and glad to hear the great review! I can't wait to get there!!!

@mjo99, glad you had great time.

That's what we love about CBR - the scenery and peacefulness

Okay, be careful what you wish for. All my CBR pics can be found at http://www.marthajo.com/02_26_2012/ . The link that says "back to main index" will remain broken for now because I don't want my family seeing the pictures before they get the touchnote postcards (and it would only bring you back to my ancient family photos). If you want to get back to see all the CBR thumbnails, just click on the Disney CBR 2012 link at the top and it will bring you back.

In retrospect, they are way too focused on the bed/steering wheel. I didn't get any of the windows or table and floor. But if you're patient, there's one of the sink area and one where my DD is opening the barrel to the fridge. One of the curtain... that totally glows when the light is on behind it.

The pictures don't really show enough, and for some reasons the rooms just don't photograph that well. They are actually pretty light. Also, to the right in the sink area, there's a bit of an alcove where the trash and ironing board and iron are, the safe, and with a bar to hang clothes or towels. There's a shelf above the rod, as well as a smaller one above the treasure chest, and we'd use those to store things we didn't want the kids reaching. The picture on the wall is the same image you have leaving the Pirates of the Caribbean ride- Jack Sparrow sitting surrounded by his loot. The The Flying Dutchaman etching in the bathtub was spotless and cooler than I expected. The compass table was nice.

The outside pictures are almost entirely Trinidad South, in the area of buildings 36, 35 and 34. The Trinidad South beach is the only one with that little wall you have to take the stairs down to get to. Each beach seems to have 2-3 hammocks and plenty of chairs. The stone turtles are at the beach at OPR, which is the beach they do the marshmallows on.

We didn't take pictures of the OPR pool or island, because whenever we went there, we were planning to swim and did not bring cameras. There is one picture showing the fort from Trinidad North. The quiet pools with the ducks was in Martinique. We didn't see that anywhere else, but thought it was cute when we saw it. It's certainly not the norm.\

The hoola hoop pictures are at the Customs House when we were waiting for the Magical Express to go home. The CMs did a bang up job making it easier to entertain the kids, and the door woman there let DD annouce the bus and got the whole lobby to cheer for her. It was very sweet.

If you are in Trinidad South and want to shake things up a little, go over the stone bridge (on the walkway, obviously), and walk to OPR on the other side. It's only a minute or two longer and makes for nice variety. It also takes you over the island, which is fun.

The pics are obviously more focused on my kids than anything... but CBR is in there, too. :)

LIDIAN _ Hope you and your are enjoying it all in the world. This is the first week for spring breaks around the US so that may be the reason for the crowds. Spring break is not just for colleges as up here in IL the grade schools are off this week and many families want to get away from the cold to WDW.

I am staying at CBR in Sept.:goodvibes I would like to book Chef Mickey around 7:00 or 7:30am for the character breakfast.

What is the best way to get there? Would a taxi be the best and fastest? I don't want to have to get up super early just to get to breakfast...

Thanks!!:goodvibes

Taxi would be the fastest. Otherwise, it is bus to Magic Kingdon and then either walk or take the monorail to the Contemporary.

This is our favorite resort. We've stayed in the Pirate rooms twice and just love the rooms. They are a big bigger than the regular moderate rooms.

Okay..no laughing :rotfl2:, giggling :rotfl:..or rolling of eyes ....but I have to ask...what are considered "Special Requests" when asking for a room? I like the sound of a corner room (And Thank you MJO for the GREAT reviews)....I know that requesting a garden or water view costs more...so I didn't want to put that in as a special request and then have to pay the extra $ upon arrival for asking for it. We did pay for a perferred room.....but just wondering what "Special Requests" have other folks put in for and have or have not gotten. Thanks!!

No laughing here. :thumbsup2 Some examples of requests:

Specific village
Specific building within a village
1st floor
2nd floor
Close to the bus stop

Ok it has been years since we have dined at. HDDR. The last time we stayed at PoFQ there was a direct bus to Ft. Wilderness before the show. Do they still have this at CBR? If not I think we will do a taxi.

There is no direct bus to any of the other resorts. If you are going to be heading directly from CBR to HDDR, then a taxi is probably the way to go. We did a taxi for an early ADR at Cape May Cafe and it was $12 including a tip.
