Caretaker at DL???

I just posted this thread on the community board, but thought I would on this one too. My mom and I are thinking about taking her retarded brother to DL next summer. He's 48, but has the mind of a 5 year old. The last time we took him to DL it was nice to see him happy, but the trip was difficult. If we do take him next year, we were wondering if there's a program where we can hire a caretaker to take him to DL for a day while my mom and I go off alone?

I would refrain from using the term "retarded" in your post. Some people are very offended by it. I would use handicap or metally challenged.

I dont think Disney offers a program if that is what you are asking. But, I sure there are some independent agencies that could help.

It is hard to keep up with what is the most appropriate word to use when referencing a person with handicaps.

I am a Special Ed teacher, and lately I have seem many children that are being "labeled" as multiply handicapped. I think the word retarted became offensive because it was used in inappropriate ways... Still though it is used by professionals as it indicates a level of functioning. (Mild, Moderate, Severe or Profound Retardation.) Though some people prefer Developmentally Disabled.

About the original post, Here in NY respite services are offered for families of children with disabilities. My friend Laura takes a young girl every Saturday to the town pool. It offers her mother the chance to have a bit of time on her own, as being responsible 24/7 for a child with disabilities is a monumental challenge. Laura is paid for this, and the girls mother does not pay the fee, An agency provides this service. Anyway, see if you can locate agencies that offer services such as these in CA. The agency here is called Association for Help of Retarted Children. (AHRC)
