Actually it is a four point harness... the fifth point would be a crotch strap which it was originally designed to have but the FAA refused it (I don't know why).

The four points are the two over the shoulders and the two over the hips. CARES is a great options for air travel as long as you don't need a car seat at your destination.

I'm so torn about the CARES harness! My DD will be 13 months at the time of our trip. I already purchased a seat for her. Right now she's 8 months and 21 pounds so I think she will for sure meet the minimum reqs, but it seems most people use these for kids around 2 years of age. Anyone use this with a younger child? Thanks for your help!

I'm subscribing to this because I can't decide whether or not to get one too. Our daughter will be 2 years and 1 week on our December trip. She is currently 17 months and pretty small and only 21 pounds. I'm hoping she'll hit a growth spurt over the summer or fall and I'd probably feel better about the harness. We do fly at least once a year so having it would be great for her until she's a big girl. I saw a little boy using it on our recent flight and he looked very content in it.

You can buckle a 2 year old in an airplane seat using the lap belt.
Does the CARES harness add safety to that however that would make it worth getting? I'm also concerned because though one of our flights is on a normal airplane, a connecting flight is on a 7 or 9 passenger! (And they count the co-pilot seat as one of the passenger seats!) So I'm not sure if the harness would even work in that airplane depending on the seat configuration and what seat the toddler gets assigned. (They assign seats when they see you due to the plane being so small). But then I also worry because I might not sit right next to him, and wonder if the CARES would be needed more then.

Also, I noticed on one rental place that it said it was up to 40". YDS is only 37" but he has a disproportionally long torso and our trip is in 2.5 months. Has anyone had a problem with it fitting thier child with a long torso or over 40"? Anyone know the max seating hieght that it will work for?
