Carded for a Lighter?

I stopped at 7-11 at lunch to get a lighter and I was carded. I was like, "Seriously!?!" She said that lighters couldn't be sold to anyone under 18. I have never heard of that. Have you?

Oh and I was too shocked to be flattered for being carded. lol

Try buying spray paint! I am clearly over 18- I have a 14 year old son. But I still get carded trying to buy spray paint for my craft projects!!

I remember when I worked at Wal-Mart and a birthdate came up when I scanned windshield washier fluid, as in you had to be born before that date to purchase. I dont' remember if it was 16 or 18, but if it was 18 I just imagined myself saying "Come on Mom PLEASE buy me some washer fluid, my friends cars all have it." LOL

Walmart wouldn't let my son(12) pay for his NASCAR car because of the Budweiser logo on the car - I took a close look and those little cars now say "intended for persons over 18."

Give me a break - I paid for it and handed it right back to him.

I think they (companies) are getting out of hand on some of this stuff.

I've been carded to buy glue

We celebrated like crazy when my daughter's BF turned 18. He could buy the glue for their school projects. Now that they're all old enough to drive, they pick up a lot of these types of things on their own.

I also recently sat in the car while my son ran into a local convenience store for a few things. I asked him to pick me up a lighter, but he couldn't buy it. A guy had gone in behind my son and when my son was told her couldn't purchase it, the guy said, I saw your mom in the car. He took my son's money and paid the clerk (nothing she could do - lol) and handed my son back the change and the lighter right in front of her.

Had I known my son couldn't purchase the lighter, I wouldn't have even attempted to ask him to try. It was funny how it worked out, but I'd not ask anyone to do such a thing.

It sure was a pain having to make a special trip for the glue though.

I didn't realize there were so many things that the under 18 crowd can't be trusted to buy.

Is sniffing glue even "in" anymore?

Hmm, I remember riding my bike with a friend to a convenience store when I was about 14 to get a lighter, they didn't bat an eye. I was using it to burn the ribbons on my pointe shoes so they didn't fray and couldn't find any around the house. I'm glad that I didn't make that bike ride (20-30) minutes just to be carded. I wonder how recent this is.

It gets worse and worse every year. I don't see anything wrong with anyone under 18 buying a little NASCAR diecast car with anyone's logo on it whether it be Budweiser, Marlboro or Home Depot.

It's not like you can drink the car or smoke it.

Yep, I've heard of or seen signs for having to show ID to buy all of those things. I like to buy scratch tickets sometimes, and it is nice that my daughter is 18 now so if she needs gas and I don't have cash I can hand her a winning scratch ticket to go cash in for her gas. Haha... I tried giving one to a friend of hers recently for driving her home from somewhere, but forgot the friend won't be 18 for a couple more weeks. Oooops...that didn't work!

I still get carded for Rated R movies and I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and DEF have a mommy body

Ok I know not the same, but I don't ever have to buy lighters, glue or dry ice.

When I worked at Wal-Mart,if someone under 18 tried to buy an age-restricted item and the over-18 person said right in front of me,"I'll buy the item for you!"(or words to that effect),I had to take the item and not sell it to either the kid or the adult,because it was against the law to knowingly sell to someone who was buying an item for an under-age person. I would tell the person that I couldn't do what they wanted,but I had no control over what another cashier may or may not do,so they were free to go back to where the item was and try to buy it at another register.

Also,when I worked at a convenience store in South Carolina,a person couldn't accept as much as one penny from their son/daughter/anyone under the age of 21 to pay for any purchase that included alcohol,because then the state considered that the whole purchase was made by the under-age person. More than once,I had to disallow a sale of beer when the parent didn't have enough money and turned to little Johnny(or whoever) and asked them for 50 cents,a dollar,or whatever right in front of me.

My Mother is 83 years old and they gave her the 3rd degree for spray adhesive. It would have been amusing if she could have understood what/why they were asking. She was buying 3 cans and apparently that is too much!

You can't buy more than 32 ibuprofen or paracetamol in supermarkets here; you need to buy them from a pharmacist if you want more than that.

In my state, pseudophedrine has been under lock and key for awhile now. You have to be 18, show ID, and have your name entered into a database so you can't buy more than 2 boxes in a certain time frame. This is all because at one point one of our counties was the meth capital of the nation, I'm not sure it is anymore but it is still a huge problem here.

I understand why they do it, but I admit it was very frustrating to me. I started college in Virginia when I was 15 as part of a special program that allows girls to enter colelge as early as after the 8th grade. Some of my friends my freshman year were 13. We are old enough to go to college half a country (or in some cases in another country) away from our parents, but we can't buy white out or cold medicine? Thankfully we had adults in the dorms who would take us shopping and if a situation like that ever arose they would help us get what we needed. It was irritating though.

Huffing is a HUGE problem. Kids die everyday from it.
