We are considering a portable DVD player for our upcoming long drive trips one of which is DISNEY....yaaaa.

What I am worried about is with the screen moving with the car is the kids getting car sick???? Anyone noticed a problem with this or is it really a non issue??? Can I also ask what size screen you have??? We have a van but do most of our long trips in a honda civic so they are pretty close in the back set.

Thank you

We have one that we use when we drive from N.C. to Disney. It's great, it's the kind that straps on to the two front seats and fits between the seats facing the back. My son is 3 and we've been using it for the last year or so now and we've never had a problem with it (and my son used to have bad reflux where he'd get sick after his bottle, after eating, from crying to hard, etc.) he's outgrown it now but never any motion sickness from watching movies in the car. We got ours at Wal-mart for around $150 - it was a great investment!

We've used ours in our SUV for about a year and have had no carsickness problems. I am not sure what size our screen is - I know we upgraded up from the standard sized screen.

yep, both DD and a friend of my DD have experienced motion sickness with the DVD player. But, not always. I think it's something you just have to try out.

We have two kids so I know there would be fighting amongst them on who gets to hold it and what not. So we found something at Wal-Mart that solved this problem completely and is WONDERFUL!!

It has 2 screens and each screen can be attatched to the headrest of the seat in front of you. They each have their own seperate volume controls and one can be turned off if one child wants to sleep or not watch the movie. I keep the player up by me so there is no fighting and it comes with a carrying case to put it in when not in use and can fit under the seat of a car.

Here is a link to it:

Best thing we ever purchased since we drive from MI to Disney.

We have one that has a 6 inch screen that straps to the back of the headrest. We also frequently strap it onto the console so it can be viewed by more than one person.. I have found that these kind are pretty good but the ones that come installed in vehicles that require you to look up sometimes make people sick. They say it is because while you are looking up you catch cars moving in the corner of your eye and I suppose it is just too much to take in at one..WHO KNOWS!! We love ours we got it off Ebay for 125.00 you can get it at Best Buy new for 350.00 or so.

After using it on an 8 hr drive to Myrtle Beach with DD I will never leave home without it. Now we have another DD so I am sure it will come in real handy!!!!

Some people are more likely to get carsick watching a movie than others. I believe that the CRT (picture tube) type of TV is more likely to make someone carsick compared with an LCD (flat panel) type.

I get carsick playing most video games such as are at Disney Quest! Less than a minute doing the Aladdin's Magic Carpet virtual reality and I was nauseous.

At the extreme end I think it would just have to do with the particular person and the particular movie they were watching. A funny here: our kids were watching a Love Bug movie on the way down in November, and there was one part where it was showing the passenger view from Herbie as he was moving. My son was 'impressed' with the visual effects from the moving of our car while watching that film segment.:) Luckily for us, none of us get car sick!:)

I get extremely car sick (can't read, turn around nothing in the car) but I am able to watch our portable DVD player that we got for our first major trip when my daughter wasn't even 2 yet. We bought and Initial from Walmart w/ a 7 inch screen. The bag that can go behind one seat or between the two front seats cost like $15, we paid just over $200 at the time for both. I know they are way cheaper now. It's also been a godsend for airplanes and hotel rooms.

As for DD getting motion sick, not at all. But then again she can ride the teacups all day. If you child has a tendancy to get motion sick then they may watching the DVD, but if it hasn't been an issue, than I don't think it will be with the DVD.

sounds like a GREAT idea.We are thinking about getting one for our trip. We'll driving down w/ DD's who will be 17 & 10,so we'll NEED something to keep them occupied and fairly quiet for 10 hrs! :smooth:

Take this for what it's worth. I get carsick even without a DVD player, but after about 5 mins of watching a DVD, I am done for. Seems like the other people in my family are too.

I have to agree with what Jennifer293 said. We have the portable one that goes between the seats, and my kids are fine with it. Two of my three kids cannot read in the car, but are fine with the DVD. I have noticed that I tend to hear of the carsick issues when it is the kind that comes already installed in the car, the screen coming down off the ceiling. I think it has to do with also having the visual of all the movement outside the car as well as trying to watch the screen. I do think there are some people that would become carsick trying to watch any DVD in the car, and others who would be fine no matter what.

We wouldn't travel without ours. My dd (8) gets car sick just going across town if she is trying to do homework, etc. but we have not had any problems with sickness and the DVD. We had to replace one of our screens after our July 03 trip. The heat is very bad for them. It is best not to leave them in your vehicle in the heat.

We fortunately have one built in our van and its a lifesaver!!! We don't have it on all the time, they usually watch a movie then take a break by reading, hand held video games, or listen to their cd player so its not always on. Wish they had these things when I went with my parents on vacation!!

Still like to play the ABC game though in the car! :rotfl:

dd has an 8in portable dvd player (she normally gets car sick).
we have built in screen in minivan we have tape player in there and have not swapped it out for dvd player yet because youngest has a lot of kids movies on tape. so they both can watch at same time with headsets - different movies. They are almost 10 & almost 2 so they don't always want to watch same movies. Oldest who is car sick can not read in car makes her sick.
She can watch movies on either system but only sometimes. It the road is windy she will start to feel sick. So she is mostly okay with watching movies if the road is pretty straight. I don't think the movies make her anymore sick than just riding does.

We bought one of those tv dvd combo so we can use in our trailer or in the house. We aet it on the floor and plugged into cigarette lighter. The kids loved it and they didn't get motion sickness. It sure helped keep them entertained for a long trip (22hr). I would definately reccommend one. Also if your kids are young enough I'd reccommend taking/getting the the leap pad notebook and books, my kids loved those as well. :flower:
