How much of a squeeze will a rear-facing carseat be in a subcompact from Avis, with 2 adults? I unfortunately cannot modify my reservation because it was booked long ago with air miles, and before we knew we'd need a car seat. I figure worst case, my wife will sit in the back if the passenger seat is too cramped.

On the other hand, what is the likelihood there will even be a subcompact available at MCO? Usually we end up with a bigger card when booking a subcompact/compact but this is the first time I've gone through Avis.

I am basing this on a daughter and her VW Beetle, plan on wife sitting behind you with front passenger seat moved as far forward as possible. it was still a pain getting baby in and out of car. she will never have a 2 door car with a child in car seat again, her words not mine

It really depends on the car seat and the car. Your best bet is to install in the middle using the seatbelt. Convertibles will usually sit slightly higher up and fit between the front seats slightly. If it's an infant bucket seat it might be more difficult. If you can't get it to fit in the middle, put it on the passenger side in the backseat and have an adult sit behind the driver.

It won't hurt at the counter to ask about an upgrade. We arrived with a Minivan rental and didn't fit all the suitcases, they upgraded to a large van for $5 more a day.
