car rental questions

Ok -we are going in May 07- I found on Dollar using the KISS2 code a Minivan for $208. I think that is a decent deal ( I however am new to this whold car rental thing). If I hit " reserve" do I pay now or am I just holding the date??
Also if a better rate comes out closer to the trip can I redo the reservation and use the cheaper code??
I hope this is as clear as Mud LOL

Hi Lesley,

Booking a car just holds it. No payment necessary until you pick up the car.

Meanwhile, booking a car guarantees that you have locked in the rate AT ITS HIGHEST. It will not go up from the rate you have. But if you call the company back often--as often as you like--and ask them for the rate, you can cancel and rebook with no fee or penalty if the rate goes down.

I just found a better rate and was able to change my promo code on my existing reservation at Dollar. I am going in October. Codes change alot. It was fairly easy to change it.

Minor detail, but you actually don't pay until you return the car... so don't max out your credit on souvenirs before you return it! : )

I still can not figure out how to change the code on my existing Dollar reservation. When I put in my reservation number, there is no where for me to change my promo code. Some one please tell me what I am doing wrong. I have even tabbed to the specials but it still does not allow me to put in a new promo code.

Go to dollar.com
On the Rates & Reservations tab, click on Modify.
You'll have to put in your name, confirmation number, and email addy.

It should come up and you'll see the promo code block. Put in the new code.

Now I would first do a run thru as a new reservation without any personal info to make sure the new rate is actually cheaper.

It also may depend on what type of vehicle you're renting. I'm getting a minivan.
