Is this a good deal? A manual compact car for 5 days for $178 US (145 euros) for driving in Paris? (unlimited mileage, pick up and return to CDG airport). Of course I need to pay for gas. It seems good to me, but I wonder if there are any hidden costs that I need to add, eg. insurance etc? Also, I have read that tolls on French freeways are about 20 euros from Paris to DLP is this correct? If I use the freeways everyday each way should I add 40 euros per day for tolls? Finally, do French cars have the steering wheel on the left like the US or the right like the UK? Any help is greatly appreciated.pixiedust:
Okay, I just found a bunch of mandatory fees that aren't covered totalling over another 128 euros. Lots of VAT and surcharge for renting from CDG and another railway surcharge (CDG has a railway surcharge too?) As I am not a French or European citizen does anyone know if I can claim back the VAT at least? There is a 3euros/day VAT on top of all these charges?

Are you planning on staying and driving in central Paris now ?

If so you will have to add in parking costs which are high.

From central Paris to DLP there are no tolls, the tolls start after the turn off for DLP

The steering wheel is on the left hand side like in the US

Re the hire cost I have no idea as we have our own car but you must have insurance :goodvibes

No. We are still planning on driving daily from DLP to Jouey-En-Josas, and from the airport to DLP round trip. We are not going to use the car in Paris as we figured out there was no parking. We do have our own car insurance and the rental company insurance covers 3rd party only. I just have to make sure that our insurance works in Europe.
I have been trying to look at and book rental cars for the past few days and had come up with wildly differing quotes from $178 US to $371 US. (I figure that the latter included the mandatory fees/surcharges and the former did not).

Thankfully as the steering wheel is on the same side then driving a manual will be no problem for my DH. I just wanted to make sure and have enough Euros on hand for tolls on the road (I guess change/coinage is needed versus paper euros?)
Once again you are the font of all knowledge. I thank you and my DH will definitely thank you once he hits the roads of France!:drive::worship:

They say around 65 km on this one and it takes an hour at this time of night. When you are doing it though it could be 2 even 2.5 times that due to traffic

No, you didn't post this route before, thanks so much. We are probably going to try and leave DLP after lunch and get to my DS after his classes (late afternoon). he doesn't get his class schedule until december, so if we can we will bring him to DLp on any day he doesn't have class.(But as it's college, I doubt that he will have any free days.)
Hopefully, we will be able to get some dinner with him and hang out until late in the evening (10ish) and then drive back to DLP. Do you really think it could take 2- 2.5 hours at night to get back? That might be a long drive for the ol' DH. If it really would take 2.5 hours at night, then I guess we would have to leave around 9pm. What do you think?
You really ought to have your own blog, you are the oracle! I am soooooo not worthy!:worship: any truly thankful for all your help. You are the best!pixiedust:
