car rental for DL trip?

We are planning a trip to the west coast for the first week in Nov and will be renting a car. I have been looking and getting so many varied rates, I thought I would come here for some advice.

I tried using the MAG code I saw here with Dollar and it was not available. I got some codes from Hertz, but they run out in Oct. Any one know any codes?

Is there really a difference between the lower priced companies and the upper ones? Will I regret just going with the lowest price?

We will be flying in and out of San Diego. It looks like all you have to take a shuttle to any agency. Does anyone know if this is true? I do hate lugging luggage on and off those shuttle buses!

We have a small SUV (Ford Escape) reserved thru Budget for 9 days at the end of Nov. for $186 total out of San Diego. Used a Wal-mart code from mousesavers. If you find something better, let me know. I check regularly since the prices do seem to vary.

If there is a benefit to using a higher priced rental company (Hertz, Avis) I haven't found it. Car rental companies rank just above cell phone companies in my overall dissatisfaction level.

Also, from the San Diego Airport website:
"All car rental agencies are off-site and do not have counters inside the terminal facilities. Car rental shuttles — boarded at the Transportation Plazas — will take you to their rental locations."

We rented a Budget SUV last year this time-but this was onsite at John Wayne Airport. It was a great rate, a great vehicle, very clean. Pick up was quick as was drop off.

At San Diego Airport, every major car rental agency is represented but NONE are onsite. All require a shuttle.

i was playing with some numbers. i wasn't sure of your pick up location and i chose a week at the start of november. total around $160 per week full-size. good luck.
