Car insurance "medical payments to others"

I was in the auto claims business for 30 years. Medical Payments coverage on an auto policy pays for medical bills that arise out of an auto accident in which the injured party is a passenger in that vehicle or a pedestrian struck by that vehicle. The coverage is offered regardless of fault on the driver. Only medical bills are paid, not lost wages.

In some states, auto policies have Personal Injury Protection coverage (PIP) instead of Med Pay, which serve the same needs, but also pays for lost wages.

Liability coverage will pay for an injury's "worth", such as pain and suffering, scarring, etc, only if the driver of the car is deemed liable. Med Pay or PIP will start paying right away while liabilty will not pay until the injury is healed.

On Homeowner policies, Medical Payments coverage pays for medical bills of a guest in your home who is injured, regardless of fault. This can be for a slip and fall, dog bite, etc. Liability coverage pays the same way as the auto policy, only if fault is determined to be on the homeowner.

PIP and Med Pay are always the primary coverage and health insurance will not come into play until the auto/home coverages are exhausted first.

There are some exceptions to these coverages, but overall this is how they were designed. Each state also has changed the coverages to meet their own requirements.
