First, some background on the story.

On July 8Th my DH and I awoke to our cars covered and smashed with limbs from a couple of trees. I called our car insurance and started the process of putting in claims and getting rental cars for us.

The damage to my DH's car was minimal so we brought his car into the body shop that day.

The adjuster came out on the 10Th and determined that my car was totaled all though the amount to fix it was very close to it's worth. So, we debated over the weekend as to whether or not we wanted to take a reduced amount from the insurance and get the car fixed ourselves or take the full value and get another car.

We decided, due to a variety of reasons, to have it totaled. It was at this point, when looking where all our paperwork is located (titles, wills, birth certificates etc) that we did not have a title for my car. This car was paid off at the end of 2004 and I can not recall ever seeing a title for it.

On Monday I put in a request with the DMV for the form to request a duplicate of my title. I also called the old loan company and requested a release of lien letter, as the dmv required.

I now have received all the paperwork necessary, had it notarized and will be leaving work early today to go to the DMV to get a copy of my title. At this point I will overnight it to the insurance company so that they can send me my money. We will then use this money towards a down payment on a car.

Now to my question. My policy states that my rental coverage is for $50 a day and up to $1500 total. I just got a call from the rental agency stating that the insurance has authorized my rental until the 25Th because a settlement has been reached.

I still have not received any money from them, and in the best case scenario, I might get my money from them this weekend or maybe even Monday or so. So, this will leave me without a car. I have not reached the max on my policy for rental coverage.

I have no knowledge on this stuff and was wondering if they can stop my rental coverage without paying me and prior to my maxing out the benefits on my coverage. I can not get a straight answer from anyone in regards to what my max is for days. Is it 30 days? They tell me it depends on the policy, but won't tell me what my policy states. I only know the amounts because I looked them up on my policy paperwork.

The adjuster has a bit of an attitude and also won't tell me. Nor has he called me to tell me that he has given me till Saturday. I do plan on calling him, but wanted to get advice from people who might have more knowledge or experience then I do with it.

Can I demand that they allow me more time with rental? Do I have any grounds to argue that?

Thanks for your help. I will be leaving work shortly and won't be able to get back on here till tomorrow, so don't' think I'm ignoring any answers to questions you guys may ask today.

Well, I can see their point. Both sides have agreed to a certain course of action, but payment is being delayed because of a snafu on your end. They are probably being gracious in giving you the allowance through the 25th.

Absolutly, I can see where they are coming from also. Trust me, I wish I had realized at some point in the last 4 years that I didn't have the title. I would have done it looooong before now.
