That would be the charming and very common practice called ear cropping. Some dipsticks actually do this horrifically barbaric thing to them at home with scissors! And for no reason other than "looks" and because everyone else does it. Right up there with tail docking. I was actually appalled when Petey came to me at the tender age of 7 weeks having already had his tail docked before I could prevent it. Sigh...some people are so sick.
