Captains Gala - What is it all about?

Can someone explain to me what the Captains Gala is all about? I know it is considered the semi-formal night but other than that what makes it "special"? Is it a must do?

I thought it was formal night not semi formal.

Some of the officers including the Captain are in the atrium to meet and greet. Servers go around handing out free cocktails ( that are already made up) for guests at this time. They have drinks for the kids too. They do this for each dinner.

You can also get your picture taken with the Captain at this time as well. There are a lot of formal type backgrounds set up this night as well for family pics.

Captain's Reception is typically on formal night, and includes the Captain in the atrium for pictures, and free cocktails.
Captain's Gala is the menu typically on semi-formal night, that includes lobster tails on cruises 7 days or longer.

what is the "free drinks" you mention? I'm all about "free drinks". Anyone have experience with that. Do I have to be in very formal wear to get one? How about just a skirt and blouse? Do I have to take pictures to get one?

In the atrium before both dinners advertised in the navigator bar tenders walk around with thrm.

no, you do not need to be dressed up at all. the gathering for the captain pictures and free drinks is in the atrium. you do not need to have your photo taken to have a free drink. we like early dinner and i will grab one on my way to the dinning room.
after dinner we change to shorts and go off to do something else like maybe a movie. i always stop and grab a glass of wine from the gala for the second seating.

Thanks so much! Now I have a plan and good to know their is a option for a free alcoholic drink. Probably the only one I will have and am already looking forward to it.

i think what you are referring to is that there is a restaurant that is adjacent to the atrium so technically they are passing out drinks outside of one of the restaurants. on the dream and fantasy you can go down the stairs at the atrium to reach enchanted gardens so again, it may seem to some that they are being passed out by the door as well.
