Can't we all just be nice?

I stumbled onto the debate board and am aghast at what is there!! Such anger, name calling, lying! I love disney because it is the opposite of what the debate board seems to be generating. It is the happiest place in the world and I like to think of DISers as wonderful representatives of what the Disney magic is all about. Do we really need a debate board to be associated with our Disney experiences? Aren't there enough of these loud, angry sites available on the internet already? I come to the DIS to soak up the Disney spirit. I know, I know, if you don't like it lady, don't look at it! But, it demoralizes me to think that there is such negativity right next door. Could we start a poll to see if DISers really want a debate board here?

If it offends you so much, don't read or post there.

I know the debate board can get nasty, but I still LIKE IT!! I don't want it gone because some people want every aspect of their life to be rose petals and pixie dust. You have a choice not to go there. If you have it removed you are forcing your choice on me. That's not fair. Just stay away from it. I happen to enjoy a nice, heated discussion, whether it gets nasty or not. I don't like my life being vanilla ALL the time.

I was also surprised at many of the posts I read over on the debate board--such rudeness, and anger, and mockery. BUT...if I recall my DISboards history--the Debate Board was started because people were debating on the Community Board, and people got tired of all those threads--so now there is a place for it.

My feeling is---as long as there is a debate board--those threads will stay over there--and not come to the Community Board. So my vote is to keep the DB.

Debates do pop up over here, but most people are civil when presenting opposing positions--different story over there. I just stay away now.

I feel like you do. And as a result - I've never been there.
Let 'em rip each othe apart. I don't care.

Some people (including people who like Disney) enjoy debating. I don't, and that is why I am glad there is a debate board. That way people can argue whole-heartedly over there instead of over here, and I don't have to be bombarded by it.

sorry, but I have to agree with the others.

I can fully respect the fact that you don't enjoy the type of posting that goes on the Debate Board. But I would never agree that any of us have the right to demand it shouldn't exist or that they should meet some type of standard that you have determined is "Disney-Like".

I don't go to the Debate Board much any longer because the Debates tend to recycle often and I got a little tired of them. But there has been many times that I have enjoyed entering the Pit.

I think the Debate Board is a good thing, it keeps debates off of the other boards. That being said I am deathly affraid of the Debate Board! It scares the tar our of me. I went over one day to check it out and just looking at the names of some of the threads made me mad so I had to go and look. Well that was a mistake I will never make again! ;) I felt compelled to add a few retorts and after getting flammed a couple of times I have stayed away.:scared:

That would be me! :wave2:

That's why I stay off the debate board. ::yes:: If I want to debate, I'll just call my older brother, nobody can debate longer or louder than him!

Every once in awhile I'll wander over there and then think -- why did I do that? I just don't usually go there. I think it's a nice option for those who want it.

Oh goodness, I'm not trying to take away anyone's right to engage in debate (if you can call it that). I just don't see what it has to do with our Disney experience. However, instead of being uncomfortable with the level of vitriole that is being expressed there, I guess I should be comforted that the debate board was created to protect us from such diatribes by isolating them to that little corner of our world. So, please, let's forget I ever asked such a silly question. I'll now retreat to the theme parks board and revel in Disney happiness.

I haven't seen a "good" debate on that board for over 2 months. By a "good" debate, I mean one in which differing views are treated with respect and not as  .

For that reason, I avoid that board, and "waste" my time on fun boards such as this.

How about the crafts board, diet board or gardening board. I don't begrudge those members a place to discuss what they like.

I asked why it exists once myself and was told that there are people who will always want to debate so they have a place to go. It is an outlet not everyone needs so it's for those who do.

I used to be very combative in my 20s and 30s, nowadays I could care less what others believe as long as I'm comfortable in my own skin. My opinion used to be the only opinion, now I realize that it's only MINE. Back in the day I would've rocked and rolled on the Debate Board, now I'm too old and tired for that kind of drama.

I guess the more intense my real life is, the less I care about what's going on outside of it.

It has been a LONG time since I have looked there. And only made one post there, at the request of a DIS friend at the time, to call off the tigers, but recall the times I had looked there in the past that it was pretty brutal and not a vey 'nice' place. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, to quote.

I do think it good though, to keep those that like dissension and conflict away from the 'nicer, calmer' boards and info boards. In the past, it also generally was a good repository for threads which had gone well beyond the 'just be friendly' guideline of this board, the CB. In recent times, those threads, which may still have some argumentative fight left in them, are most often closed here, rather then moved there, for the fighting to continue.

I do think it has value, to keep that stuff away from here and the other boards. JMO.

I have never posted there, but do lurk once in awhile when I'm bored :bored: with life. Sometimes, I like to see what topics are being "debated" and if interesting to me, then I'll read them. I love to read different points of view, if they are done without personal attacking. If I read a debate thread and it starts to wear me out, .:rolleyes1 then I click off and come back to the "fluff" world.

I don't think your question is silly, but I am glad there is a separate board for these types of discussion.

I have always had posters be respectful of me EXCEPT one on the debate board. I like the debate board, it is a nice change of scenery. I also love the Garden board - gotta go post now!::yes::

Don't go to the debate board (especially if you are liberal) unless you don't mind your blood pressure to going through the roof:earseek::crazy2:

I don't generally post on the debate board but I do go over and have a look on a regular basis.

I say to myself.............I wonder what the debaters are arguing about today...........let me just go and have a look.

Too much political debating going on over there and that doesn't really interest me.

Some people really enjoy the atmosphere of the debate board and I am glad that they have a place to go, to do their style of venting::yes::
