Can't decide if ds should ride Star Tours and Soarin' or not

We've never ridden Star Tours or Soarin', due to Dh getting extremely sick on any simulator rides, and me not having much interest in riding them. My son has expressed an interest in riding both for our upcoming trip, but the problem is that he's prone to motion sickness too. He often gets car sick when riding on winding roads, or if the vehicle makes lots of stops and starts. He also got sick about three years ago when we went on a multi-hour boat cruise on a river. When he gets motion sickness, he (like my dh) feels sick for hours, so it can really mess up the day.

I can't decide if he should ride these rides or not. My daughters have no interest in riding Star Tours, so it'd be easy enough for us to skip that one altogether. However we do all (except dh) want to ride Soarin', so my daughters and I will ride that one even if ds opts out too.

How common is it for people prone to motion sickness to get sick on these rides? Would ti be a good idea for ds to skip one or both of these rides?

I get terrible motion sickness in cars on some rides (winding) and also boats and I'm fine on both Soarin and ST. They're short, so even if it doesn't agree with him 100% it's over before you know it.

Soarin' is particularly gentle, and I don't read many reports of motion sickness from riding it. I think it's worth the risk. Star Tours is less gentle, but still not one that I hear a lot of problems with. I think that's likely safe too.

(Said the stranger on the Internet.)

Soarin isn't really a simulator ride and I don't know of anybody that gets motion sick on it. I'm sure there must be somebody that is affected by it but that's got to be a very, very low number.

Star Tours OTOH, is pretty motion intensive. I can understand people getting sick on this ride. If it were much longer I know it would affect me and I'm not seriously prone to motion sickness.

I can ride Soarin' without any major problems (the city scene messes with me so I close my eyes for that short bit). I tried ST once and felt ill - I didn't throw up (or anywhere close) but I was very glad when it ended and will never ever ride it again.

I have problems with motion sickness. I can't do the circular theater in China. I tried the virtual reality ride in Disney quest and felt awful.

I'm actually more inclined to get motion sick on soarin rather than star tours.

DD12 and I both get motion sickness from long car rides or from sitting in traffic. If riding in the back, sitting in the middle so you can see out the front window really helps with this. Boats and especially screen rides (we cannot do any of the Omni theater movies either) also make us sick. We have both enjoyed Soarin many times with no issues. I believe Star Tours was closed when we were last there so can't comment on that.

FWIW, recently we've been going to Universal which has many screen rides. We both take Dramamine and ride everything and we have a fabulous day. DD also takes it when we go on a plane if our flight is more than 2 hours. Take it 1 hour before riding and drink lots of water. It would be a shame to miss out!

Make it the last ride of the day?

LOL! I think that's what I'm going to do with Star Tours. I just moved our plans around a bit, and switched it to the last thing we'll do before we leave the park for the day.

It sounds like Soarin' isn't as much of an issue, so we'll keep that one where it is.

Thanks everyone!

DD suffers from severe motion sickness, but rides both. There is one part on Soarin' (river part I think) that I get a little nausea from but I too close my eyes. It's more the screen than actual motion so if he says he's starting to not feel well, have him try closing his eyes. Star Tours is more jerky and has never caused a problem for DD.
Both are short so he may not have time to feel sick.

Make sure he stays well hydrated. About an hour before have him drink some ginger ale. Stir it to help kill off the carbonation. It's an old rally co-driver trick. Dehydration can really make it very easy to get motion sickness.

Have you tried Sea-bands (motion sickness wristbands)? They are elastic wristbands with a small plastic ball on them that you wear on both wrists. They are very light, non breakable and easy to keep in your bag. They could just put them on before the rides. We use them all the time for both car sickness and boat motion sickness - they work very well for us and don't involve any drugs which I prefer for my daughter.

my motion sickness doesn't sound as bad as your son's and I lasted a minute on ST before needing to close my eyes. I was fine tub eyes closed but the visuals and motion together about did me in. I haven't done Soarin. Plan to try it on our August trip being fully prepared to close my eyes if needed.

This is me too. ST was terrible for me. I spent the majority with my eyes closed, but it didn't help much since the ride is so jerky. I have no problem with Soarin. If no one else in the group wants to ride ST, I'd skip this one.

I think only the individual can say for certain. My daughter is very prone. She had ridden all the rides at least once and then developed her personal list of rides she would not do again because of her motion sickness. Last year, I offered her Dramamine as we do for car rides. Now she can do everything. It does not make her drowsy.

She has done the same for Islands of Adventure and Hershey Park with great results.

But these are her personal experiences.

I used to get car sick, but mostly in the back seat - since I rarely sit therenow, I don't know if that is gone. I get motion sick in IMAX movies and motion simulators. The swooping scenes in the Canada movie bother me, but since there's no motion, closing my eyes solves that. I just volunteer to watch the kids who are too short to ride Soarin in my group, but if I rode, I believe the rides so gentle, I could again just close me eyes if I found it bothersome.

Hubby suggests I never bother to try Star Tours.

Soarin' doesn't bother me, except right at the end when they show an LA freeway and speed up the picture - I just close my eyes for that 'tiny' portion. I love the ride very much and that is the only portion that makes me dizzy.

As for Star Tours, that one can easily make you sick. I do ride it wit dh, but there are lots of places that I have to shut my eyes.

Sea Bands work great!

I don't get motion sickness, but once on Star Tours is my limit (much to the disappointment to my son). I also make sure not to ride it right after a meal, just in case.
