Canon S3

I didn't install the "solutions" disk that came with my Canon S5. Photoshop will import pictures directly (file/ import) and windows computers have the software to download pics and videos directly right from the camera.

Hey bob100 - sorry I didn't respond - I was busy playing with my new toy - uh, camera... I did finally figure out that I didn't need to use the software. Of course, I'll probably need a new computer, 'cause I don't think it can hold 4G of pictures!!! ;)

Does anyone know of a good setting for fireworks display. Thanks for your help.

I didn't think to grab the link, but somewhere in the photography board is a "How to shoot fireworks" thread. I forgot to memorize it for last night, but from what I remember it's got LOTS of great tips.

Sports mode works good for fireworks.

I am one of the biggest supporters of using Sports mode on my S3....in fact, I used it during the 4th of July parade yesterday, mainly because it was so overcast that I didn't want to take the chance of messed up photos.

BUT....I don't use Sports mode for fireworks. Last year, I used Night Snapshot (under the SCN mode) and got ok fireworks pics. I checked before we went to fireworks last night and last year Night Snapshot worked out to 1/8 sec at f3.2.

This year, I decided to actually use the Fireworks mode. I didn't like Fireworks last year because I kept missing shots. This year I forced myself to stick with it and once I got the hang of it, I got some really nice photos. Fireworks mode settings were 2 sec at f8. Took me a while to figure out the timing and when to press the shutter so I'd get the bursts and not just the white tails as the shells went up. Here are some from last night; unfortunately, there wasn't any wind, so the smoke kind of lingered and messed up quite a few shots, like this one:

But some shots turned out quite nice; all I've done to these is crop them:

Now I have to head over to the fireworks thread and post mine over there!

I wanted to share a butterfly photo I took this afternoon, straight from the camera, no editing. I love how you can see all the pollen on the butterfly's body!

Hi! I just found this thread! I bought the S5 at the begining of the month. I'm still trying to figure it out. I have a lot of reading to do for tips! :)

Making sure I subscribe to this thread!

I was comparing my S5 to my SIL's Nikon D40 and she takes some great isolation aperture shots. I asked what she does to manipulate her aperture numbers and she said "I don't. I just put it in portrait mode and shoot".

Which made me realize, I've never tried portrait mode so I tried it out on DS and DMIL and it worked pretty good!

So.....what are you favorite modes and under what circumstances do you like to use them?

:wizard: My S3 IS is a little over a year old and I love it. I was away last month and took some pictures, no problem. When I got home and tried to download them the camera would turn on briefly and then freeze. I never got the pictures downloaded. I tried everything...new batteries, cleaning the battery connections, etc...now it won't turn on at all...has anyone else had this issue? What could the problem be???

These are some pictures I have taken while I was in Oregon visiting my dad. The first one is of a little bug and the second one is of a pumpkin flower and the third one is

of some flowers. I love this camera.

don't know the solution to your problem but you could ask in the S3 users group - s3users.com/forum
can't hurt!

Every time I try to use portrait mode - the picture is always blurry. I must be doing something wrong......... duh.

The only modes that seem to work for me are auto and sports..........

I am having the same problem too.I think I need to purchase the other book and learn how to use my S5IS features alot more before we go on our trip in December.

I love this thread! I got an S5 for Christmas and I am having so much fun playing with it. I'll post some of my photos once my posting numbers are high enough (10, I think?).

Wow, nice shot of the crab...

I've just purchased a few accessories for my S5. Within this past week I've purchased the following:

58mm Fotodiox Adapter (came with a UV Filter and a new lens cap)
58mm Polarizer Filter
And a tripod

Plan on using these at the beach. The adapter and UV filter for the protection aspects.

The adapter is nice, fits snugly, and isn't made of plastic. Sorry for the back drop, but some McDonald's napkins made for a quick clean back drop (napkins were unused). I've heard that the lensmate adapters are also nice, but the one shown above was about half the price of a lensmate (with uv filter and lens cap). Sorry I'm not trying to advertise for the company, just thought I'd share my experience with others who might be able to benefit.
