Canon S3

Great shots, Ghost1000!:thumbsup2 I esp. like the one with Mickey & Minnie looking at the castle all lit up - you were in the perfect spot for that one! Can't wait to see more.

Glad you like em! - here are a few more from the Castle Lighting show - including some other Mickey and Minnie pics:

Just bought DW the 5S for Christmas. Been waiting 3 weeks to give it to her. She loves it. The posts so far have been very helpful.:cool1: :cool1:

OMG!!!! My partner bought me the Cannon S5 for Christmas and I am the happiest person in the world right now! :woohoo: :dance3: :cheer2:  Now I get to sit down with my new toy and read over this entire thread so I can learn all the tips on how to take the best pictures I can! I wanted to be able to take better concert pictures and it sure appears that this is the right camera for that! I am so happy right now; there are just no words. :) I can't believe she gave me such a wonderful gift! :goodvibes :cloud9: Now I get to join this thread and soon I'll be posting my pictures here! :goodvibes

Ok I can see getting caught up on all this will take me awhile, but I hope to be hanging around here a bit. On my trip this past fall we had a Canon A70 and an A530. We never gave up the A70 as it took better night shots. It gave up on us however, during our trip. When we returned I started researching again & we bought the S5 IS. WOW! I love it. We are just getting started with it but I am really hoping to pick up a few things around here.

Ok - I think I was on Page 6....

OOOh - and I will try to post some pictures from the new camera as well...it got a work out at a dance recital a couple of weeks ago.

I got the Canon S5 camera. I need battery help. I normally use Energizer Lithium batteries but this camera takes 4 batteries.

Is it better to get recharable batteries? Which ones do you recommend?

I also neeed a memory card. Which is best?

I use energizer 2500mAh rechargables. And all of my memory cards 4 of them are Sandisk 2GB ultra II SD cards. I like always having the ultra ll's since i take lots of short videos of the grandkids.

Ghost1000 - Those are great pics!!!! Did you customize your settings or use auto? Flash or no flash? (Talking about the night show at the castle)

I tried taking pictures of our Christmas lights this evening with my S5, and they're coming out a little blurry. I used the night snapshot mode, no flash, hand-held. Any suggestions? Thanks!

(I'm having trouble getting the photo to post larger. Maybe I should give it up for tonight!)

I had bought a set of Duracell 2400mAh rechargables that came with a 15 minute charger before I got my S5. I used them for our recent trip to WDW for Christmas and was able to shoot all day with them. I just charged when we got back to the room at night. I did carry as spare set of regular duracells with me and only had to put them in one evening. (I would guess S. C. got similar results)

I also have SanDisk 2GB ultra II SD cards, except I only have 2. That was barely enough for 3-1/2 days at WDW. I am just waiting to find a really good price on a 4GB Ultra II SDHC card. I like to shoot video too and this camera does an amazing job! Got some fantastic video of Osborne Lights!

Have Fun with your new S5! :thumbsup2

Hey Luv2Camp,

Nightsnapshot mode is described as: "Allows you to take snapshots of people against twilight or night backgrounds by reducing the effects of camera shake even without using a tripod" but I think it reall wants to use the flash. It sets ISO at 250 and a 1/8 shutter speed.

I got some decent pictures by using Program mode and bumping ISO up to 400 or even 800 but will need to run them thru Noiseware (see some of the PP on this thread). Also got some good results using Sports mode.

Others here, I'm sure may have better advice! I'm just a newbie w/ my S5.

Hi SFLTigger. Thanks for the advice. I've read on the past posts about the noiseware. I'll keep messing around with it and see if I can get some better shots. I'd really like to have it figured out before we go to Disney so I can get some nice Wishes photos. I got a new bag for the S5 today. I may not know what I'm doing yet, but at least I'll look like I do! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the replies! I got a 2GB Ultra II for now, I might buy another if a good price comes around. I payed full price since I needed it. I also got a blue Lowe Pro bag and I just stuck with my enegizers for now they normally last for the whole WDW trip.

I hope the AUTO mode will be good enough for now, because all these options are making my eyes bleed.

Got my S5 two days ago and have been plowing through the manual and taking practice shots. Some come out great, some come out... well, they don't. I think I need to start taking notes so that I'll remember what each mode does.

The photos that turned out great are really amazing. The detail is so much more than I expected! Now I can't wait to try shooting a water drop like I saw in this thread many pages ago.

But like I said, right now my eyes are bleeding. Time for a break.

Be careful, the waterdrop is addictive! :lmao:

As far as gwtting Christmas lights to work out well, you really need a tripod to get nice crisp lights. Even then it is a bunch of trial and error. I would place the camera on a solid surface if you don't have a tripod. Set the camera to Av mode (aperture priority) and set the aperture to something like f5.6 or f8. The camera will set the shutter speed for you. It will most likely be quite slow (less than 1/30 and possibly as long as 30 seconds!). That is why you need the tripod. You cannot hold a camera steady long enough to get that kind of shutter to not have at least some blur in the lights. When you press the shutter, be careful not to move the camera at all. If possible (I think it is) set the camera to shutter delay for 2 seconds or so. I think this is the timer setting. That will allow you to press the shutter and get your hand away before the camera actually takes the pic. This should allow for a nice steady camera at time of image recording.

Confusing? Sort of. Once you get the hang of the camera, you will get to know all of these functions, etc and it will be second nature.

Good Luck. Post your shots when you get them. Your snapfish account should have a setting for 600X300 pixels. When you upload them, be sure to have that set. Not sure how snapfish works though.

Do I need to have a Snapfish account to insert a photo? Or can I just add it to this window by clicking Insert Image? Sorry, I haven't done this before. :confused3

Nope, you can't copy and paste it here. You need to open an account with one of the many free photo hosting sites out there. I (and many others here) use www.photobucket.com . Their site is easy to use. You just upload the pics and copy the URL link (that is displayed below the picture on photobucket) and paste it in your post here.
