Canon S3

Thanks for the information! That is exactly the type that I was looking for.

How bad is the noise compared to the other camera? One of the things that was different between A85 and the S3 was sensor size, but I don't know if it was enough of a difference to really matter. Maybe it is just the difference between the max ISO values of the two cameras.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get the S3, but dh won't be happy if I end up not liking it.

I notice the noise under low-light conditions. Both of my DS's are in the high school marching band, so I was taking pictures at night in football stadiums under stadium lights. BUT....even though the pictures had a lot of noise, I was able to get decent shots, compared to the shots I'd get with my A70. And the noise was worse when I'd use the full 12x zoom (I'm just so thrilled to be able to zoom in on my boys from the bleachers!!) rather than just shots of the whole field. Somebody posted a while back that you can buy noise-reduction software, but I haven't tried that yet.

I do think you'll be very satisfied with the S3; yes, it's bulkier than your present camera, but you can do so much more with it. I really like the ability to bracket your exposures on the S3; maybe it was buried in the menus on my A70, but I never found it. But I'm still trying to get the hang of macro vs. super-macro......

My daughter does synchronized swimming, so that's why I wish that I could afford a camera that does better in low light. But I think like you, I'll be happy enough with the shots (especially being able to zoom in on her). They won't be terrific, but they will be good enough.

My kids also run cross country and track, so I'll love the zoom there. Since it's outside in bright daylight, I won't have to worry about the lighting.

Your opinions really help. Thanks!

I own both the A85 and a S2 IS. The S2 is very similar to the S3 with only minor (in my opinion) differences. Here are my thoughts for what they are worth.

Pros for getting the S3:

1. Zoom, zoom and more zoom. I can't say enough about that zoom. To me it is priceless.

2. Image Stabilization. Extremely nice feature that makes for many more clear shots. One overlooked feature of this is during video shooting. The video on the A85 is always shaky, the S2 IS is not.

3. The other features are cool too. The color feature and other little extras work well and are fun to play with.

4. The continuous shooting mode has 2 levels, regular continuous shooting (one per 1.5 seconds, maybe?) and "H" continuous mode which is a great deal faster. I don't know the specs on this, but it most certainly depends on the lighting conditions, etc.

5. The ability to buy the barrel assembly for the lens and attach filters to it if desired. This causes the camera to be even bigger than it already is though.

6. An ISO of up to 1600 (if I read that correctly) would be nicer. The S2 and the A85 only go to 400. However, if I understand it correctly, the aperture size is the real problem with point and shoot cameras in low light situations.

Cons to woning a S2 vs a A85:

1. The S2 (and I think the S3) only focuses in one spot in the middle of the screen. The A85 had multiple points (I think 9?). This was a HUGE drawback that I realized after my purchase.

2. Size. Not small anymore. That comes with the zoom, I would think. Not bad, but certainly not as easy to carry around.

3. The lens cover does not open and close automatically. The lens cover is a cheap piece of plastic that tends to fall off the end when in the bag. Hopefully they fixed this issue with the S3, but I don't think so.

4. If I knew I was buying a camera of this size and for the price, I would have saved to get a DSLR. The features that this gives you (aside from the zoom and IS) are not going to wow you as much as you may think they will.

In conclusion, my experience is that these cameras will NOT perform much better in low light situations, because they are, afterall, still point and shoot cameras. It may be a bit better than the A85 though. They are not going to provide you with much more (than the A85) other than a zoom and IS which seems to me to be precisely what you want the camera for anyways.

My advice is to not make the mistake I did and buy this camera because you think it will perform "like" a DSLR. It won't. However, it will perform as a very dependable point and shoot camera. If that is what you are after, you will not be disapointed in a year or so as I am now.

Thanks Andy - that was a great explanation!

Andy, thanks so much for that in-depth post. You have pretty much summed it up for me. I really do want the zoom. I would love to have a dSLR, but I don't see ever justifying the cost of that to dh. If the S3 can perform as well as my A85 but have the added benefit of the zoom, I think I'll be happy. I really do have to think about this, though. Maybe I should take the money that I would have spent on the S3 and hold it for another year to see if I can get to a dSLR. Cons 1, 3, and 4 do worry me a bit, and that is why I asked for opinions. I can see from your post that I am right to be thinking this over.

Thanks for all the information!

Thanks for that S3 website. :thumbsup2 I can't wait for spring to arrive here so I can get outside & use my camera more. My more cat is seeing spots from being my inside subject all winter. :rotfl:

One option for all of you reading this and thinking about (or have) a S2 or S3.

Look up "lensmate" via your favorite search engine. They make a 'housing' for about $25 that snaps on in place of the little ring. I have this for my S2 and never remove it!

It has 3 big pluses:
1) Protects the mechanism & lense
2) Allows use of filters (woohoo!)
3) Allows use of a REAL lens cap!

The only con is the camera is a bit bigger in that it doesn't 'shrink' when turned off.

I give up. :faint:

I think Amazon should be paying me a sales commission.

I didn't intend it to be that way, really. My bargain hunter self just wanted to share a good find. :rolleyes1

I SO agree!! :flower:

I was mad last week I was coming home from work and going by the water it was so pretty and unusually warm, so I ran down to the beach for a quick walk with the dog (who was with me because I'd gotten my kids/dog to drive to school but still had a commuting buddy to drop off.) Anyway, I had neither of my cameras with me since I only had my work bag. Darn, it was absolutely gorgeous the way the sun was hitting the water and the tide was coming in. The dog was in the water chasing seagulls and it would have been the perfect time to try out the S3 out of doors.

I'm with you - way too many indoor shots this winter, LOL. I think I'm really going to like using this camera outside. Will post some new ones on the Pet thread when I finally get some. Hey, the suns's coming out now! :scratchin

This it totally OT, but I went to the S3 website to ask a few questions. Thought I'd ad an avitar to my profile. OMG!!!!!!! I have never seen such offensive avitar choices in my life. ICK! SCARY!! :sad2:

Be warned if you decide to visit those boards and create a profile!!!

I agree the Zoom is amazing. I got my S3 for Christmas and am still learning how to use all of the features. My only complaint so far is the lens cover. It's a complete waste!

You should try over at DPreview. I think your request was a little too specific to have much luck with our limited number of regulars. Besides, with the Disboards, most of us spend our vacation dollars at WDW. :mickeyjum
