Canon S3

I don't have the site, but would be interested, too. Good luck with your new camera, let us know how you like it and be sure to post your first picture on Groucho's thread when you do.

Congrats on your purchase! I think you will love the camera. I have the S2 and an extremely pleased with what it can do. Someone posted this link the other day and I thought it looked very informative although I haven't bought it yet so I can't say for sure. It applies to the S3 exclusively, but the S2 is pretty much the same camera so it would apply to mine as well.

Hope you enjoy it!

We bought the short courses digital version-printed it and have it saved. DH has really liked it. I haven't really read it very much. I can't understand the aperture, etc. type stuff. I'm about to have a master's degree and I can't keep this stuff in my head after I read it. Ugh. I don't know why...I guess it's just one of those things. We think the book was worth it, though.

Thanks WDWAurora! I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it. It is helpful to know that it is useful to your DH. So, if I understand you correctly, you can buy the CD version of it and still get the book on the CD? I thought it was just the animations and stuff. If that is the case, then it is worth the money for sure. I think it was like $25 for the printed book and $25 for the CD, right? I can print it at work if I want a print version.

Thanks again!

Andy

It still is free S&H (as of today, 3/23); scroll down to the vendor list, or add to your cart, you will see the free S&H. Great price. :thumbsup2

I asked this in another thread, but just to cover my basis...For those of you with the S3, do find it takes a while for the camera to focus during movement or on something moving? So long that you end up missing the shot? TIA

I have the Shortcourse book, I think it is great. And best wishes with your new S3. :thumbsup2

Yep, I've noticed the focusing; it's usually on something that doesn't have a whole lot of contrast.

I also can't figure out how to use macro - I'll think I'm focusing on a flower, but the background usually ends up in focus. I've been using super macro instead, but there's got to be a way to get regular macro to work. I have the short courses book, but haven't finished reading through it yet. Better get to work....

For any Mypoints folks out there - Target also carries the S3, for $349.99 - there are codes for 10% off floating around, which brings the price to the same as Amazon's price...and you get 10 points per dollar from Target.

Hi all. I'm getting ready to purchase the Canon S3 and was wondering if anyone had photos of Yellowstone and/or the Grand Tetons (or Mount Rushmore area) taken with this camera. Nothing fancy with lots of tricks or editing, just simple photos with one of the simple settings. THANKS! (We're headed that way this June.)

:)

Can anyone compare these cameras for me. I have been trying to do some reading, but I must admit that I am not completely up on all the terms. I currently own the Canon A85, and I am looking at the S3 IS. I do like the camera that I have now, and I am mostly interested in the larger optical zoom.

I would love a camera that performs better in low light, but I can't afford an SLR. Will the S3 IS perform at least as well as my A85? How is the shutter lag?

Is there anything that might disappoint me on the S3 compared to the A85?

Thanks for any help!
Beth

Hi Beth! I got my S3 back in Sept. My prior camera was a Canon A70 and DH has the A95, so even though I'm not familiar with the A85, I guess I can assume it's somewhere between the A70 and A95, huh?

That said, I LOVE my S3!! You'll have shutter lag with any camera (unless you get an SLR), but the S3 has a "sports" mode that includes continuous shutter - just hold the shutter button down, and it takes picture after picture, every 1.5 seconds or so. (Be careful - you can take a LOT of pictures this way).

As for low light, the ISO adjusts up to 1600 I believe. And in certain shooting modes, the ISO will adjust automatically so you don't have to think about it. However, the high ISO leads to noise (see below).

And the 12x zoom is awesome!!

What I don't like: DH's A95 has a lot less noise than my S3, esp. in low-light conditions. Probably has something to do with the sensor size (one of the other more knowledgeable guys here has a great post about sensor size).

Thanks for the information! That is exactly the type that I was looking for.

How bad is the noise compared to the other camera? One of the things that was different between A85 and the S3 was sensor size, but I don't know if it was enough of a difference to really matter. Maybe it is just the difference between the max ISO values of the two cameras.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get the S3, but dh won't be happy if I end up not liking it.

My 2cents.... If you liked your A85, and are ok with the slightly larger size of the S3, then you will LOVE the S3..

I went from an A70 to a S2, so I can relate.

Thanks! I think that I am ok with the size. I've gone in a couple of times to handle it. I would definitely keep my A85 for the times that I do want to tuck a smaller camera in my bag.

(Dh and ds are both hoping that I give the A85 to them.)
